Masks? Handwashing? Sanitizer? - How to Protect Yourself from Coronaviruses

Today, we all do our best to protect ourselves from coronaviruses. But a lot of what people are doing doesn’t really help, and it could take away supplies from those who actually need them. Hank explains what does help, and how it prevents the spread of infection to be successful at protecting yourself as much as possible!

I mean in Czech Republic it is mandatory to cover our faces and practicly everybody is sewing masks, giving thm for free(you can even mail them for free!)...so everyoune get some cotton cloth and play those sewing tutorials and start making them! I myself with my brother and my grandma made im less a week 2 500 masks and sell them only for the price of the cloth because i am not a milionare. Everyone needs to join the fight because if everyone wears them we can lover the risk of spreading by 80%. My mask protects you, your mask protects me.

@@aviendha1154 How many people actually adhere to that rule? And two meters isn't going to help you if someone sneezes or cough as under the right conditions a sneeze can reach distances up to 7-8 meters. A mask will reduce inoculation, meaning that your immune system has a better chance to mount a defense, resulting in milder symptoms.

I think people are missing the point of those masks. They're not to protect you from infection, they're to protect others if you have the virus and are asymptomatic. Choosing not to wear a mask is not putting yourself at risk, it's putting *others* at risk.

Some european countries mine included have made (apart from social distancing, hand washing etc.) also mandatory for everyone in public to wear masks - the public wears cloth masks, usually DIY, under the motto "Your masks protect me, mine protects you." We take precautions to not touch the masks and immediately wash and iron them after using. Thus we are not taking masks away from health professionals but also protect everyone even more. For now we remain ranked as one of the safest countries so I hope this becomes standard in more and more places.

As a biomedical researcher, it’s a unique situation to see how fast research can progress once enough funding is provided. In march alone, several clinical trials have enrolled patients to test two drugs which had originally been developed against the Ebola virus or HIV, the first US vaccine trial has started and an antibody against a COVID-19 protein has been purified (I just made a video about new COVID-19 breakthroughs). Although the COVID-19 pandemic is devastating, I think sufficient treatments will be on the market comparatively soon!

Without that, any mask/respirator is not going to protect properly against covid-19 & in my experience, it's impossible to get even close to that level of seal with a disposable n95 mask/respirator. Amazes me that those reusable respirators aren't being issued to medical staff! Would resolve a lot of the problems with shortage of supplies too, since the mask can be washed in bleach/disinfectant & the cartridges clipped off & the n95 particle filters clipped off them & put into a pressure cooker/autoclave to fully disinfect between uses. They're supposed to be disposable, but due to no elastic, metal etc, there's nothing stopping their full disinfection & reuse in a pandemic, supply shortages situation. I believe there's versions that have just the n95 or n100 particle filter without any carbon filter too, which would probably be even better, since the carbon cartridge obviously can't be disinfected inside (but it doesn't really matter, since it's inside the particle filter & the respirator has the one way valves stopping any return air entering them from the other direction, you'd want the cartridges to only be used by one person though for infection control, but not really an issue, they're only really there to hold everything else together in this setting) All that said, I still think it's possible to do MUCH better with mask protection than is seen in this video! That mask can be fitted to the face MUCH better than it is, so as to reduce those huge gaps around the nose & cheeks & actually get at least some of the inhaled air to be going through the mask rather than through the gaps around the nose & cheeks. There's no way any significant amount of the air being breathed in is being filtered with that mask worn as it is & even exhaled air & droplets would be largely exiting that mask when worn like that! That mask wearing is a good example of why my country's government is currently not advising the public to wear masks, they're saying they are considering changing that ruling, but that if they do, it will only be done with extensive education programs around correct mask wearing so as to avoid false sense of security masks & people constantly touching the masks because of movement & discomfort & itching

studies actually show that touching the face is more common when wearing the mask than not, due to adjusting the mask & in many cases taking it on & off for fresh air, talking etc. Each time the mask is moved, it can move virus particles & dead skin cells to protect them to the nice warm, humid inside of the mask. Additionally, even if no virus particles got inside the mask, by extra face touching to constantly adjust it, it means extra virus particles on the face, close to the mouth & nose. When that person gets home & takes off the mask & washes their hands & goes to watch tv & relax, they then start moving those virus particles around more & onto their hands & then when they start picking their nose & licking their fingers after eating, the virus is transferred into their body for infection. The masks stopping touching of the face claim has been debunked as an urban myth I'm afraid. And I'm a former paramedic & paramedic trainer too, with over 30 years in those jobs, so does that mean all of a sudden what I say is now more credible than anyone else? It shouldn't, because while I'm telling the truth, no-one reading has anyway of verifying that, or has any idea the experience & education of anyone else replying

This isn't SciShow's best video 😞 The short answer is: healthcare providers need them because n95 masks do help them, but (statistically) an n95 mask won't help you. The long answer is that n95 masks are only one part of a very large toolkit of equipment and techniques that protect healthcare providers, and masks of any grade don't protect from the primary infection vector (hard surfaces). Don't get that last bit twisted, it's still easy to catch from being too close to someone, it's just much, much easier to get it from a doorknob, counter, or other hard surface. Basically, a properly fitted n95 mask filters out 97% of airborne particle matter the size of this virus - which is just useless trivia if you only wash your hands for 5 seconds. The masks are absolutely helpful if you're going to be in a crowded area (like public transportation), for an extended period of time (IIRC the current threshold is 10-15 minutes), and in those circumstances a handmade mask (70% effective) is good enough. The good stuff needs to be saved for the folks who are subject to exposure for their entire workday, not just their commute. The folks at masks4all.co/ do a good job of pulling together the various studies in a way that helps clarify much of the confusing messaging going around at the moment.

It's pretty simple. Masks do help, but you don't need medical grade masks that healthcare workers need. If there isn't a short supply where you live you can buy them, if not leave them for the medical workers/essential workers and make yourself DIY ones. Double up with a scarf if you need to. There's many online tutorials on how to do that and how to handle/disinfect your masks. But remember to not fall into a false sense of security that wearing masks will protect you. Practice rigorous social distancing and wear masks when you absolutely have to go out around other people. And of course, follow the other hygiene guidelines like washing your hands.

(I cant stay at home, i work at a pharmacy, this was at first given to us for surfaces... i read the label and the next day ordered 1L of alcohol based surface cleaner, theres no way you can take 5 minute cleaning breaks and leavin counters wet) Hypochlorate based one needed 1 minute on surfaces. Hand sanitizer that has benzalconium chloride advised 1min hand rubbing. Check labels, if theres no data there, check biocide registry or fda, or whatever is available. You are not safe from a quick spray-n-go...

I'm not so sure about the mask thing. You breath in from the front, the vacuum is being pulled in from the direct the mask is, not just from the sides. And while the virus is smaller than the weave of a normal surgical mask, most airborne particles aren't. Is it 100% effective? No. Is it even 50% effective? No idea. But wouldn't 20% effective be better than nothing? I'd wear one if it cut infection by 5%. The only reason not to is if it was shown it actually increases infection. And if they were mandatory the spread would be slashed. The idea that aren't effective so don't bother is old thinking. No one is hoping for complete protection, we've entered the probabilities game, reduction, reduction, reduction.

unless you have a full face mask with actual air scrubbers on your back it wont do much at all. that is the problem. the only reason medical people do use them is to protect others from what they might have.

It does work, but it has the most effect when you're at high risk of getting it (e.g. nurse/doctor treating COVID-19 patients). There is a shortage of these inhale-preventation masks (close-fitting N95+) so regular folk shouldn't use them up, save them for the professionals that really benefit from them. So 1. If you are healthy, DIY masks won't do much. wash your hands and keep distance. 2. If you are asymptomatic, you won't spread much virus through breath, washing hands +distancing is more important. 3. If you are tested positive, you get given exhale-preventation masks (or DIY). Still, don't go out. 4. If feeling sick but untested: stay home at all costs, be responsible, don't go out. Make DIY masks if you share living rooms.
