TAYF (GHOST)
Showered with this city’s bullets, I chorused with ghosts
Bathed by traffic lights, I danced our dabkeh
Till i was high on the the marrow of the electric pole,
And i poured tears - neon - on swollen pupils.
Till the fezzes came to take us, to prisons, to castrate us, to make medallions.
But we sewed flags from funeral shrouds (from friends on death row).
The mushrooms have started to grow
Tomorrow we inherit the earth
The mushrooms have started to grow
Tomorrow we inherit the earth
My life spent; with rights mortgaged off to your sentiments
My history erased from our books like they were yours to claim
Our hips translated Sappho and Abu Nuwas in the tongue of oohs and aahs
On bed sheets embroidered with the same oohs and aahs we chanted at the picket line.
The mushrooms have started to grow
Tomorrow we inherit the earth
The mushrooms have started to grow
Tomorrow we inherit the earth
For now we still have songs;
Sing with your highest heels on.

These guys give me hope in a better Lebanon. They are an inspiration. Their music is not just some noise thrown into the market; their music speaks for the generations to come about change. Truly, "we will inherit the earth tomorrow". Mashrou' Leila don't only bring back hope in a better Lebanon, but also in better Lebanese music. They redefine pop culture and bring it back to its tradition in breaking taboos. Not only do they break the taboos by singing of the discrimination the LGBT community faces, but they also certainly break the cycle of rewashed and re-worn manufactured sounds you hear on the radio today. Agree or disagree with their themes, these guys set the standards to what good art is! The lyrics, the compositions, that voice! It all fills me with satisfaction. Good job guys!

Tree Hugger well Mashrou' Leila are not politicians. They are artists; these guys are bringing the taboos into the daylight; their job is not to do any rebellion or reform. Their job is to make music, and these guys are doing a way better job at reflecting struggles than any other artist I know. I might disagree with some of their "ideologies", but that does not mean I will not support how bravely, vocally, and publicly they speak their minds. I agree that you cannot scrape a system and that reform might be a more reasonable approach, but to reform you need awareness. These guys are spreading that. Let's give them credit for that at least.

Tree Hugger a wise man once told me "khod men el na7le 3asleta". I do not know if you speak Arabic but it translate roughly to: "focus on the bee's honey". I do appreciate your attention to detail, but I guess the artists are who they are, some of what we deem as cracks can be at the heart of their identity, which we may never dare control. So we must either pass on, or appreciate the imperfections. Okay this is getting too philosophical. Pika pikachu!

Still coming back to this after I found this randomly on a blog of someone I commissioned to do some Arabic calligraphy artwork for a friend, who also dipped his toes in Arabic culture and art, shared with me eagerly, and I knew he'd appreciate :) Tempted to learn this language, really!
OMG, WHY havent I heard this band before?? WHY oh WHY do society insist on playing Bieber, Drake and Minaj on radio when theres this miracle of a band existing??

@munishachauhan5910

well its common that majority of population listen to their local music or the music in few familiar languages, it's exceptions like us who venture out of the box for our souls look for more than mere words. i myself only understand English n Hindi ( coming from north India) completely but Arabic and middle east music never stop calling me. and just like you i discovered these guys!
@jakobtheander9198

Haha, beautifully said! But yeah, honestly I would rather listen to a language that I don´t understand than listen to before said artists. It has a nice ring to it, does´nt it, music sung in arabic? There´s this feeling to it that I always found very mysterious and satisfying, and it makes me happy that because of the internet suddenly the world is closer to me than ever. Hehe, greetings from Sweden then, I still haven´t been in India, but it´s on my bucket list since many years back.
@munishachauhan5910
7 жыл бұрын
totally agreed with 'a nice ring to it' part. for french, and Spanish I nurture similar liking. and so true I have always felt that Arabic has a mysterious and sensual touch to it and if the singer's voice is soothing then the listener is transported to other dimensions. ha ha! any way greetings from INDIA too, 'NAMASTE' !
cant get enough of this song 😍

My favourite
You guys are revolutionary. It takes guts to bring up topics such as the LGBTQ community and let alone make fantastic music about it. In Arab countries/North Africa/ the middle east general it's especially difficult because having lived there, and still living with a very conservative muslim family, I know religion plays a huge part in people's hatred. It can blind people from thinking for themselves and coming to your own conclusions about how to treat people who are different than you. This band is brave as hell. Keep it up Mashrou' Leila. Love from a Lebanese fan.
