I own exactly these two bikes in these colours and also the 125ccm Black Seven. I bought them all in 2020. They ride all perfect on the small streets in the Black Forest in Germany and all country roads. They are made for this. The Scrambler ist perfect to hunt Big Bikes on small streets. The "fivehundred" is good to make 400km a day without any problems. Both take exactly 3,2 Liters E10 on 100m. I feel it doesn`t matter how fast i drive. Both have about 8000km no problems. Tires on the 500 are now BT 46, on the Scrambler Pirelli Enduro. Both run 145km/h (90mph) with GPS. Speedometer are really exact and show same Speed as the GPS. The sound is very different but both sounds fantastic. Only the brakes are lousy if you prefer a really fast rde. The Black Seven is top in town and for a short trip on sunday morning. Consumption only 2,1 Liter/100km, it runs 103km/h GPS, speedometer shows 120 ???. Tires now also BT 46, really really top. The brakes are the best, much better than the bigger ones above. Sound is top. Also no problems on 6500 km with E10.

I have the Australian version - Sol Invictus XY400 - what a fun bike - the engine is the old Honda XR400 single with radial valves - the crankshaft etc are genuine Honda parts, the bike is made by Shineray - it's actually quite impressive build quality - l fitted a sump guard (ex XR400) (the oil pipes run under the crankcase & are vulnerable), MITAS EO8 tyres, Barkbusters, heated grips, LED lights, the Scrambler handlebars as l do quite a lot of off-road (we are blessed here with lots & lots of dirt roads) - except for the exhaust which reduces ground clearance the Scrambler could have been a different choice - l have the older Carby version - the fuel tank actually takes 15litres - enough for nearly 400klms - it will sit easily on highway speeds 110-120kph with very little vibration - as you found turning circle is minute - such great value for the money - is relatively light weight & incredibly well-balanced

Thanks guys for this fantastic/fun review! I've ordered the roadstar a few weeks ago. (Here in Belgium it is called the "Mash five hundred 400"). I've watched this review many times, and based on it, I've made that jump to this bike. Really looking forward to pick it up.

When you say 'twin cylinder' based on the Honda XBR. The XBR was a single cylinder four valve with twin exhaust outlets. I think you've made the common mistake of counting the exhaust headers and thought they were cylinders.

I had an XBR 500 in the 80s, I loved it, the sound on the Roadstar is the same as the XBR , when the silencers rotted I found the price of genuine honda parts very expensive so I had a pair of BSA gold star silencers made for it, about half the price of the Honda replacements! it sounded great, I never had any reliability problems with it, just hope the chinese made bike is as good.

Now the scrambler looks more cool, I love the twin pipes on the roadster more though the scrambler sounds nicer, at least on the video... I guess I would have to see them both and try to ride them before making a decision. I am thrilled though with bringing back this conception of a classic replica bike not so powerfull but all that you actually need.

Yep, they are singles, nowt wrong with that, the carb versions are cheaper, and CV carbs are well sorted and easier and cheaper to set up for aftermarket xhausts and airfilters. Drum rear brakes are OK, bit more hassle changing shoes than pads, but less likely to contaminate friction material when degreasing back end. The "Five Hundred" is a model name, MASH not alone in that weirdness, Triumph had the 595 Daytona (955cc) and BMW had the F650 which I think was an 800cc twin. There are numerous versions of the 400, theres on with a sidecar over here!. Thing about bikes like these is that you can usually fit a big bore kit , but only you know so its still insured as a 400. I'd choose the scrambler probably as the 2into 1 zorst might be less weight???, plus cheaper to fit 1x end can than two.

Carbs are probably on the way out in part due to tighter emission regs, but also due in part to modern fuel which can lead to carb icing in certain conditions, -I think EFI bikes can be made to run on leaner fuel mixtures than carb bikes, at the moment, carb bikes are managing ok, but in a couple of years who knows???, even lawnmowers will be EFI lol.

BMW are famous for branding engine sizes as being something their not! case in hand they used to do a car (possibly still do this not sure?) and labelled it as the 316 and it had an 1800 petrol or 1900 diesel in it or very confusingly did actually have a 1600 petrol lol yet all 3 could have the same badging! so they've done it for years!

The 400 Dirtstar Scrambler looks great, especially the chrome version. One thing that I don't like about it is that low slung exhaust, it's just too easily damaged down there. I'd prefer the machine to have a high level exhaust with a bash plate installed to protect the engines oil sump from getting damaged by rocks etc.

The Tubes, running from Cylinder Head to the Muffler, should be realy bend like those on the old Honda 350 Scrambler or the newer Triumph Scrambler. They are NOT 2 cylinder, they are a single cylinder dual exhast port. The reason they only have 28 hp is they are all designed for the German market, a 400 at 28hp has really low insurance in Germany. When I lived in the Netherlands, I worked as a driving/riding instructor there for a while (bike car, truck, bus), and we had 4 x Honda 400 twin cylinder at 28 hp each. It's the same with rear tyres you will notice many bikes for the European market have a 4.50 rear tyre, this being for the German market again (TUV and Insurance).

I was on their website before and didn't get any issues myself. I have known that there are some poor franchises out there but they are usually monitored by companies like MotoGB who are their suppliers, although I believe Mash rep themselves. Unusual one that is. AR Motorcycles have never reported issues with them though.

Bosch ABS? Twin cylinder?? No. I own the Roadstar. Thought I'd take a walk on the dark side and try a Chinese. The fuelling isn't perfect. Likes to cut out when coming to junctions but starts easily again. Side stand digs into the tarmac before the left footpeg. Quite dangerous. Right footpeg catches well before the tyres run out. A bit more thought here would sort a reasonably good handling bike. Rear shocks cope well 1 up but bump out with two onboard. Seat strap digs in the arse on long journeys. Saving grace is the little engine is as hard as you like and uses no oil. I've had mine riding 2 up into hurricane headwinds uphill flat out on multiple occasions when it wouldn't pull top gear and it doesn't bat an eyelid. Oddly it's the rubber parts on the bike that have gone off. Headlamp mounts, fuel cap seal, side panel mounts, oil tank mounts.. The metal finishes have coped through winter as good as any Jap I've had. Despite its traits it's a great little bike. I frequently do a few hundred miles on the motorway and back roads in a day and would go anywhere with it. If I sit with traffic rather than try and pass it I regularly achieve 82mpg. God knows why they charge for road tax on such clean little things as these yet cars get it free.

Hi, great to hear from an owner. Yes, the twin cylinder mentioning was a slight error, thrown off at the time by the twin exhaust. However, even Mash state it uses a Bosch ABS system. www.mashmotorcycles.co.uk/model/400cc-mash-models/roadstar-copper It seems overall you are pleased with it. Do you think it is worth the money?

I had a look at a low mileage used Crosby 400TT in South Africa last year but was shocked at how badly aged and worn out the rubber parts were. It had done about 6000 miles but I've seen 30 year old japanese bikes in much better condition. I've had a couple of Chinese tiddlers and they've been reliable enough machines.

Only, I will do it in 2041 (23 years from now), if any of these 2018 Mash bikes still exist at that time, and compare it with my 1995 (23 years old) Yamaha which is still in perfect order today and in constant use to this day. The bikes are made in China, but all Mash are doing is re-branding an existing machine. They did not do R&D, no design, nothing. They just took an off the shelf bike from China and re-branded it. It's available throughout Asia under a variety of different brands and I am sure many other countries as well. It's a weakness in the Chinese style. Whereas the Japanese built brands and live or die by their brand name & quality. The Chinese just churn out product that get's branded a 1000 different ways, some good product and some absolute shite. The trouble of course is all Chinese built bikes then get a reputation based upon the worst products. That said, I do like these bikes and Shineray (the manufacturer) are one of the better quality Chinese manufacturers.

Danny Moore what that Chinese bikes are dominating the world.. I have a Honda from 93 all original just chains, light bulbs, tyres and brakes renewed.... used and abused in the swiss mountains, sure it has scars... I would like to bet that with the same treatment those Chinese bikes wouldn't last half the lifetime.. With most things what you pay for is what you get... on my Honda with bumpy winding roads I never have to tighten a bolt.. I have the feeling that with the other bikes it would take constant attention to keep everything in order.. And otherwise when there is a real hill cyclists will be overtaking because they have no torque... I could keep on but you catch my drift....
