“Aunt Jemima portrays the white, romanticized notion of an Antebellum “mammy,” detached from the cruel reality of enslavement during the late 19th century. The inspiration for the character came from the song “Old Aunt Jemima.” Starting at the World's Fair in 1893, a formerly enslaved woman named Nancy Green was the first to travel around the country wearing an apron and bandana as Aunt Jemima.” so the mascot in itself was already racist

It's literally a breed of dog named after a place in Mexico. I cannot imagine that being racist, that a literally Mexican dog has a Mexican accent lmao. What it really is, is that connecting themselves to Mexican cuisine wasn't helping their image. Saying it seems too racist is really just a way to say "it's not you it's me" to the Mexican people. Do people go to Taco Bell in Mexico? What even is Mexican cuisine? High protein, high fat, quality fresh ingredients for cheap. Taco Bell is may have tacos and burritos but I wouldn't exactly call it Mexican. It makes more sense for your public image to make people think you're your own unique thing than to remind everyone you're actually a really poor knockoff.

Me tooo! As a mixed hispanic girl growing up and having that sweet childhood innocence I never saw Aunt Jemima as a house maid (slave) i found until she got canceled recently! I saw her smile and always thought she was the irl CEO of her breakfast cafe or restaurant. When I looked at her, I saw positivity since I thought this was HER *own* brand. It goes to show children aren't even remotely racist at birth. No child sees a black lady on bottle or a black man on rice and thinks they're associated with slavery. Why can't we take the bad history and turn it into something beautiful for the next generation. Why wipe out the history completely? Why more self segregating? Let a black woman be on our bottles, rewrite her story for little nonblack children to see black women can be/and are successful!

Mia on Land'O'Lakes is the most unjust one in my eyes. She was literally drawn/redesigned in the 50s by an Indigenous man, with great detail and accuracy/not drown as any sort of caricature. In Poland there are quite a few mascots that don't exist anymore. Danio (brand of yoghurt) had Mały Głód mascot which retired in 2020 but it was shown in the most recent ad. Kropelka (brand of glue, kinda like Super Glue) for years had a mascot that looked like the most stereotypical native American man, from what I know this mascot retired in 2016 but from what I noticed from time to time this mascot makes an appearance in the ads every now and then. Łowicz (they make all sorts of things, like jam and pasta sauce) didn't exactly have a mascot but for quite a long time in the ads there were people of color, in 2020 they stopped doing that because of the BLM movement and how most of the ads were a bit racist. Delma (brand of margarine) had a little "butter" person called Delma, it's not in the ads anymore. This mascot retired in 2019 and then only appeared on the packaging until 2021.

Exactly, like YES it is a depiction of a black woman from the 1800’s because Nancy Green (Aunty J) WAS in fact a black woman from the 1800’s. If anything they should be celebrating the fact that an enslaved woman in the south went on to become the face of homestyle cooking
@YouTubeReady

Nancy Green was a real woman, not Aunt Jemima. Therefore she was a caricature inspired by Green. Other famous caricatures that were eliminated include…Betty Crocker, notice how her face was removed as well. Therefore both brands used caricature. Doing so we violating the law, which is sin, and because of sin there is a punishment…If a serial killer like Ted Bundy tells a judge of all the good things he’s done for society do you think the judge would let the serial killer off free? The same is with us; we’ve committed such crimes against God that we are separated from God forever; we are punished by suffering Hell for eternity, a place with no hope for us. But God loves us so much and with all his heart that he gave his only Son, Jesus Christ, to this cursed world to be crucified on the cross. (John 3:16-17) Now anyone who accepts Jesus Christ, God’s Son, as their Lord and Savior and believes he rose from the dead the third day will be saved from eternal damnation in Hell and live in Heaven in paradise with him forever. Many will choose to follow Satan, whether it be because they think they won’t succeed otherwise or won’t have any joy or friendships, but he will soon reveal himself as a murderer and a liar as he was since the beginning and he will curse all his followers as he cursed God and all of Satan’s followers will be cased into ever burning Hell. Don’t believe this lie I too believed in! Our God is a loving God full of compassion, yet he is a righteous God with righteous judgment. (Matthew 13:41-42)
At this point, the world is not helping each other but instead complaining about something we should all be treated equally❤
I always had this idea for Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben having a commercial story. Lol Their a old married couple that are big foodies and you get invited to learn about them or watch them do little cute scenes for the products. Aunt Jamima likes hotcakes and pancakes, and her homemade Syrup makes the whole neighborhood come by for a plate. She's the Auntie of the whole block, and the talk of the town with her amazing hotcakes. But when lunch or dinner comes around, Uncle Ben's rice makes her heart melt. Everyone comes around around the cookouts for Uncle's delicious, savory and flavorful rice and Aunties biscuits as a side.

Those people likely never existed at all despite what the companies lead you to believe. Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben are both African-American caricatures and never actually existed. Aunt Jemima was based on the racist “mammy” stereotype that was common back in the day because white families would sometimes have black women (often slaves but later workers) work in the house doing jobs such as cooking and taking care of the children, they would often be depicted as obese, very dark skinned, big lipped, and having a warm, caring personality, essentially a Jim Crow caricature. this was harmful to black women because it became very common for people to view them as such. Uncle Ben was invented by Forrest Mars SR, former owner of the Mars company, as a caricature to help their rice sell better. they wanted to portray the old kindly black farmer stereotype on their packaging and while not as harmful as Aunt Jemima this still perpetuated stereotypes that don’t apply to the African-American community as a whole, but due to famous caricatures such as these people of other races tend to associate African-Americans with these brand mascots and apply these stereotypes to them.

No they didn’t, Aunt Jemima is based on a freed slave who made the flour recipe for the pancake mix; Nancy Green, who looks nothing like the character btw, they’re just both black. The character was based off Lillian Richard, a woman who was given cooking classes and was scouted out… and then stylized throughout the years to what we have now Uncle Ben was completely fictional, the recipe was made by some German chemists. As far as I can tell they used a black man as a mascot to pander to black people who used a lot of rice in their cooking. The design was based on a Maitre d’ in a Chicago restaurant

Not true on Aunt Jemima. Aunt Jemima was an entirely fictional character, to rebrand the already-existing Pearl Milling Company pancake mix as an “authentic Southern recipe” from the “good old days” of the antibellum South, and based on a popular character archetype in minstrel shows, the “Mammy.” They hired real women to play her, but treated them poorly, and replaced the original when she wasn’t willing to travel to Paris to be a living world’s fair exhibit, after her previous terrible experience being forced to do the same in Chicago. No idea about Uncle Ben’s, but Aunt Jemima was definitely NOT a real person, and you can look it up.
