Masai Twist Braids Experience!! Northmead, Lusaka, Zambia. Faless
Until recently, the service of plaiting hair in Zambia was provided mainly by female hairdressers. But there are new players on the market whose arrival epitomises creativity and a strong nose for a business opportunity.
As Zambian women frequented Tanzania for business, they returned not only with their merchandise, but a new hairstyle too.
The growing demand for this style among Zambian women triggered a migration of young Maasai men from the East African country to their southern neighbour to exploit what has turned out to be a huge market.
They have made Zambia their second home. Initially, they would camp in town outside shops selling hair accessories and accost potential clients while displaying samples of the hairstyles they worked on. They joined the mobile saloons operating in shop corridors beside the bustling streets of Lusaka. They soon stamped their presence on the local market by relocating to the teeming townships where some of them now also sell hair accessories.
Jacob said that he enjoys doing his job because that's how he makes money, he and his friends had struck a rapport with their Zambian counterparts and referred clients to each other.
“When people come to us and ask for a hairstyle we don’t know, we take them to our Zambian friends; and when the customer wants to do ‘twist’, they bring them to us,” said Jacob. “Twist” is the style the Maasai specialise in which Zambian women fell for in Tanzania. It’s time-consuming and can take a lone hairdresser the whole day, but the Maasai can pull it off in three hours at the most as they work in groups.
Scenes of a woman sandwiched by three Maasai men unveiling a “twist” are now a common sight.
“When they (Maasai) first came, they were few and you had to hunt for them,“But they are now many and I like them because they’re fast.”
Doing the “twist” involves turning the weave into tiny threads by repeatedly rolling it before knitting it in the hair.
“Twist” fans say the thinner the threads, the smarter the style, but it’s also more expensive. The price list in Jacob’s salon showed the tiniest type costs about $20, while the thickest is $15.
When asked why “twist” is a male speciality, Jacob first laughed before saying: “To achieve perfection, the rolling of the weave is done on thighs and requires hard pressing; only men can do it as women cannot expose their thighs.”
They are highly networked and keep a close circle.
But the male involvement in this business has its own social issues.
“There are women who find it awkward to be closely surrounded by three men in that style,” And some of the husbands do not like it.
When I asked Jacob about it, he was nonchalant. “It’s just business,” he said. “The women come because they want to look nice and we do our job. It ends there my brother.”

Thank you so much. He really is an artist
Dang these men are good they need to come to the caribian
You have women here in America that would pay $500 dollars 💵 USD for that style, and $1,000 or more in Hollywood, with more than one person working on their hair. That is a true art form.
Wow. That is so serious skill. To everyone reading this, Jesus loves you.
