Me too Doobydude....I was listening to a show about Tavistock and the Frankfurt School, and this was mentioned. But I didn't see Mary point to those wearing the 9 and 11 at the same time she sings, "...Can't You Feel The Town Exploding..." I think croww777 was stretching the truth a bit. One thing I do find interesting though is the line, "..The Willow Turns His Back On Inclement Weather..." On 9-11-2001 a hurricane was scheduled to hit New York, but it turned eastward just a short time before it was to hit. It was scarcely mentioned in the news.

"Mary" was a three-episode flop. She surrounded herself with some talented people (Michael Keaton, David Letterman, Swoosie Kurtz, Dick Shawn and James Hampton), but TV variety shows were on the way out in 1978.

Ludwig Drummer Yeah, he was struggling to keep it together. And he really didn't want to be there, you could tell, especially when they all put their hands in. Hilarious. He was embarrassed by this, but he appreciated that it was so stupid it was funny. That would be the hallmark of early Late Night. So stupid it's funny.

  • @jdsbreufl

The answer is no. This clip is from a one hour variety show Mary Tyler Moore had in 1978. Her classic sit-com had ended the year before and this variety show, entitled "Mary" was premiered with great anticipation. For that reason, the first episode had extremely high ratings. Unfortunately, it was not very good and gave little incentive to tune in the following week. Ratings plummeted so quickly that Mary Tyler Moore herself had CBS cancel the show after the third week. She came back the following year with a re-tooled version titled "The Mary Tyler Moore Hour". This show was a sit-com about a variety show. It was a trifle better, but not enough, because it was canceled by the network after eleven episodes.

+Eva Staitz Mary Tyler Moore's talent was anything but "overrated." Try being the co-star of a long-running blockbuster TV show, and then going on to be the star of yet another one. Many of the biggest Hollywood stars couldn't even manage one successful TV show, much less two undying classics.
