As an older black male, some blackface skits and photos, in my opinion, have truly been meant to discredit and totally mock our darker skin tones in an utterly wicked and racist fashion. Blackface is usually accompanied by jive talking/poor English, dreads, afro, a 40 oz bottle and somewhere in the photo/video will lie a slice of watermelon or a piece of fried chicken. That's the blackface that's always angered me! What Delta Burke's character, Suzanne, did was tasteful and not meant to hurt others. In fact, she looked like a rather cute baby doll on that stage. I was not offended in any way.

So true....True..... though I am not a Black American I am native American, as long as the character in whatever show or skit is not derogatory or belittling I believe it can be in good taste and clean fun. The 80s were the bomb. People could have fun without hurting one another. How I miss those days

In reference to the Suzanne's brown makeover, when Julia found out she told Suzanne she didn't give a damn if she was the color of a California Raisin, she wasn't having Suzanne trying to look like Diana Ross. Hence Julia's expression when Suzanne comes on stage. I saw the original episode and I laughed so hard, I could barely catch my breath🤣

Suzanne was never one to be PC but she didn't care because she didn't see it the way others did. Call it naive or whatever but when it came down to it, Anthony was one of her best friends whom she confided in more than Charlene, Mary Jo or even Julia. But if I had to choose a friend it would be Suzanne because she never hid her feelings so what you see is what you got.

Yes, Annie Potts was definitely feeling it! I've often wondered how many Diana Ross (and The Supremes) clips she had to watch to get that scene just right! The way she worked her eyes, mouth and that pose with the arms stretched at the end/freeze frame wasn't something she pulled out of her own hat. To everyone that felt the need to address that the song was from Diana's solo career...we know that! In order to include all the actresses and to make that one helluva scene, they had to improvise a little.

And it wasn't racist, it was a mud treatment that Blanche and Rose was trying out right when Michael Dorothy's son was engaged to an older black lady in this episode. And the lady's mom and aunts were there to talk them out of the engagement. This was a funny episode and was also educational in accepting others regardless of color or age.

How is it more offensive to change your skin color than it is to change your hair color? I'll tell you: because we're taught to be offended. "Blackface" is completely different from what Suzanne has done here. With blackface, the person uses BLACK makeup with white lipstick and engages in stereotypical behavior in an attempt to be funny. I would think it would be more offensive to see a group of white women in black wigs pretending to be black than a white woman who took the extra effort to darken her skin to look more like the part she was playing. If that's offensive, then why aren't the wigs offensive? People need to learn to think for themselves and stop letting divisive political pundits tell them what to think.
