Queer as Folk was on TV 20 years ago why does everyone in the media forget about that ground breaking show? IT was the First to depict gay life and culture honestly and openly.

I agree. But the answer is that it broke TOO MUCH ground. It was too honest and open. The media, run by cis straight people, will only ever present an image of queer life that is palatable to cis straights. We can be gay - just not TOO gay. And we mustn't have sex in any way that can not be accepted and understood as depicted through a straight lens. And as a group we must be pretty, young, and vanilla. No shameless fat old queens, please! And our relationships (and mess) must be represented in exactly the same way as straight relationships (and mess) - just with same sex couples. Nothing that challenges, questions, or broadens. Nothing that would make a vapid, narcissistic, teenage Valley girl say "Ewwwww!" Honestly, I believe we have gone backwards. That's why the straights now think queerness is old news, and that the need for PRIDE parades has passed. The media has created an "acceptable" homogenised way of representing us, and woe betide anyone who presents differently from the accepted paradigm!

The original UK version of QAF written by Russell T Davies was incredibly groundbreaking and challenging to heteronormativity, and (from my understanding) attracted a pretty broad audience, both queer and other (ok, maybe a lot of straightish women 😅). The US version seemed, to me, to be more soap opera-like and played to more niche audience. Both definitely had a role in paving the way for greater queer representation on TV.

I'd love to see a story about Emperor Hadrian and his young lover, Antinous. It's a tragic love story because Antinous drowned after falling a ship when he accompanied Hadrian to Egypt. Hadrian mourned his loss deeply and named the area where he drowned after him, which still bears the same name. He also had him deified and his cult was hugely popular and widespread in ancient Rome. In fact, of all the statues discovered that depict actual historical figures, the overwhelming majority depict Antinous. When you think about it, he was histories first gay god. Anyway, I think you could tell a great story about them. Hadrian is recognised as one of Rome's best emperors. What is it about ancient Rome's actual history that makes for great storytelling?

A curious film, partly ludicrous, partly very insightful. Once you get beyond the willy-fest, it's a tale of sharp observations on the road to power and influence - its dangers, its uncertain path, its cost. Julianne Moore is masterful as the central character, portrait of a woman pursuing her ambition in a hostile world, to be respected if not liked.

@@PosthumousAddress Yes, frequently. If you do some research you will see that from his very first interview, ten years back, he casually referred to his girlfriend in a way any nineteen year old would. There have been similar references ever since, casually in passing, without pressure. In a recent interview with L'Officiel magazine that got picked up and widely repeated, he explains how he has lost girlfriends due to the demands of being away from home for long periods due to work. An in depth interview last week to promo Mary And George he explained he had recently learnt Spanish so he could talk to his girlfriend's parents, who had no English. Also in a range of new interviews, he has explained how important he feels it is to represent the Queer community, having many queer friends ( as normal working in creative arts especially) and listening to their views, especially supportive of his role in RWARB. He clearly does not feel sexuality to be a big issue to be addressed as he is confident within himself and his own identity, as well as always mature and discreet. Characteristics which have been constant and evident over the years.

What is Galitzine on about?! The relationship between James and George grew into something "pure and beautiful". No it didn't. It was clearly always transactional, as the series - for all its flaws (and there are many) - can't help but show. It was also all about power and exploitation. George and Many were devious, grasping nasty pieces of work. And according to the series they didn't even care much for each other. In any case, there's not much "pure and beautiful" about any of the relationships in "Mary & George". It's cynicism all the way. But maybe someone, or just Galatzine, decided that wasn't much of a selling point.

Interviews are great but the show is a waste of time and it’s horrible 🤮

The series is a load of inaccurate displays of that particular time, with nobility swearing etc. and horrible dark photography, not to mention bad acting from all those concerned. It should have been an interesting series, based on fact, but instead is a load of rubbish.

Nick could have his pick of str8 roles, but he finds taking gay roles like taking candy from babies, leaving gay actors out of work. If u care about gays irl, please don’t watch content w/gay-4-pay actors.

considering he was contacted directly by the creator of this show for this part..(a gay man btw) its fine.. he's good at what he does and people see it.

Lol gay 4 pay. What about American for pay or playing princes for pay. You know you can't tell someone's sexuality by looking at them right? It isn't the same as ethnicity or gender. And queer people who don't want to come out should be able to play queer roles without having to reveal their sexuality to the world.

@@deadpoetstoddIt's fine for u, cuz u put ur needs for entertainment above real life rights for gay actors. I can't talk u into being a better person, so i did the next best thing & turned off ur notifications. Byeee.

I think these are made more for the ladies anyway to get bigger audiences. They like the eye candy and aren't thinking about your valid point. Fellow Travelers on the other hand is for gays, and expect smaller audience, so they cast all gay actors.

@@markusdufus3679 lemme guess, you're one of those people who harassed Kit Connor until he was forced to come out when he didn't want to. A+ looking out for the gays on that one.
