MARX VINTAGE NAVARONE PLAYSET How I Set up my Navarone

Ойын-сауық

Such a great set! This is the 1975 version of the Marx Navarone, with some info on the designer Frank Rice, and other versions, but it's mostly just how I set it up for the shoot in Playset Magazine. I got this from Mike Jordan many years ago.

I never had this set, but my neighbors did, and we would spend hours in the backyard or on the living room floor during sleepovers, playing with it. We all had our favorite little figures and features. No matter what the newest toy was over the years, this set was one of those old reliable toys we would always go back to. Great memories of a great toy!

Oh that's a GREAT memory! I tool was at my friend's house when I first saw this set. It truly dazzled me, and my favorite figure was that kneeling guy, shield up and sword held like he's striking.

I had this as a kid and it was great fun. At some point after I had grown and left home my mom gave it away. So, it's nice to revisit such a fun toy at holiday times.

I had that bad boy as a kid as well...I can still remember not only the day when my dad said "yes" to the purchase but also how I felt in the moment as we walked it to the register in the store (I think it was Toys R Us). We brought it home and I remember setting it up that first night on the kitchen table in awe and amazement at the detail, number of vehicles and of course the working elevator. Mine had the mat, which was really the only way to explain why you got a boat with the set. That still has to be in my top 25 gifts of all time.

I remember Christmas 1971; I was 9 years old and my twin brother and I received our first Marx play set: Fort Apache. Awesome playset that we kept around for about 7 years and ended up giving most of it away by then. We had Marx Battleground, too. We also received various MPC soldier kits, too. The 70's was the Golden Age of toy Soldiers and that doesn't even include Air fix soldier kits that we had and played with, too. Since we were the youngest, we also inherited our older brothers Civil War Blue and Gray soldier kits, too.

Got this in 1976. One of my all time favorite toys. Same year for Christmas got an amphibious assault ship that I would pack all my soldiers in for the landing

Well done vid. As a casual enthusiast who wandered here, really good job. Some skills at work here. I'm about 2 years too old to have been in the Guns demographic, but I enjoyed the way this was made. Love those Marx playsets!

I don't know if you know this, but BMC toys do things like this. I like the video by the way. I'm 35 now, but your never too old for army men toys in my opinion.

The nice boxed examples are indeed difficult to find. I’ve found that many of these boxes have water damage from sitting on the floor in basements. Cool video!

boy, that brings back some memories. We would turn the whole dining room table into a war zone. Mom tolerated it because it kept up quiet and busy while being stuck inside because of weather.

Had one of these, played with it for hundreds of hours. For today's youngsters, this would be equivalent to your favorite WW2 video game. Although we did have the "Pong" video game, it wasn't too engrossing. I'm pretty sure my younger sibling played with and destroyed the rest of the set, as I left it at home, once I move out. I still have the 155mm silver Howitzer.

Great video,Rusty! I'm one of your original Playset subscribers from the early days when you first started up. Of course Marx also used this same mountain in an IwoJima set featuring Japanese instead of German troops. Too bad we don't see great toys like this nowadays.....I'm trying to figure out a way to homebrew a Navarone mountain, perhaps using wood or cardboard. Speaking of playsets, go to Bing Images and type in "1970's Ainer "World Patrol Forces" toy soldier playset" and you'll see something really unusual. This huge set featured all MPC reissued figures and vehicles, with a color photo-wrap carton. What's bizzare is that it has the Japanese, Germans, Americans, and Russians of WW2 participating in some sort of joint training exercise----which of course never happened. Never could happen! Pure science fiction but interesting. Have you ever covered this playset in your magazine?

At one point I think they actually produced a Japanese themed version, with the Japanese replacing the Germans. I DO remember that the quality and detail of the soldiers was excellent. Far better than the other mass produced GIs of the day (i.e. bucket of soldiers).

  • @marxvideo

Thanks! Yes there were multiple versions. The first one, #3412, got mats. But the second version, #3402 for 1977 had two varieties - one with and one without the mat. How to tell: The carton shows the contents in a small box on the right - one version shows the mat, one does not. Subsequent versions like 4301, and 1980's versions, mostly did not come with the playmat. And some are without the howitzer, also. The differences are outlined specifically in the December issue of Playset Magazine (#123 (www.playsetmagazine.com) Thanks for the thoughts!

I wouldn't have dreamed of something like this kind of playset. The movie is a top classic film. I never new there would be an item made for kids playset based from a serious war film. If I'd seen that back in the 1970s I'm quite sure I too would be excited by this. Very interesting toy playset.👍🇭🇲🦘🐨✌️
