The line "father, father, father. We don't have to escalate" really gets to me knowing how he died at the hands of his father. So sad.

@@MeIn321 Yes I agree as most people would. Unfortunately, some parents who have not been shown how to love by their own parents, lack the nurturing and communication skills to connect even with their own family. Sad and unfortunate indeed. RIP Marvin Pentz Gay Jr., who also spelled his surname as Gaye (April 2, 1939 - April 1, 1984)

‘What’s Going On’ is one of those rare songs that causes you to stop what you’re doing and absorb the message. Truly an outstanding piece of artistry, to stand the test of time.

Best bass playing ever......................
One of the greatest songs of all time
1971. A tumultuous time. The Vietnam war was winding down. Nixon had promised to end the war and he was at least keeping that promise, anyway. But when he promised, "I am not a crook......, well we know how that worked out. As I said the war was winding down, but the protests continued. I was in agreement with the protests. Today, knowing all I now know, I'm not so sure we were right. Gerald Ford showed his metal in ending the war and his quick decisive actions in the Mayaguez incident. He earned my respect and I was a liberal in those days. That being said, this is an iconic song and right or wrong, it's a page in history. Ah, 1971. I was 16 years old and just beginning my truly rebellious years. lol Brings back fond memories.
Marvin Gaye is the definition of "cool" with his wise lyrics and smooth as silk voice. This artist was ahead of his time in trying to bring awareness to the inequalities and struggles in the world during that period which are still as relevant today. Such a shame that his life was cut short. Just love this man. Rest in peace Marvin knowing that your contributions to the music industry and messages of love for one another were beyond generous. 🦋

_"Baby I'm hot just like an oven, I need some lovin'"_ (from Sexual Healing). Probably the deepest and most profound lyric ever set to music. Anyone who can rhyme oven with lovin' is a lyrical genius!
Motown wanted no part of protest songs but Marvin Gaye had the power in the industry to make it happen.
I love Gaye!
Marvin Gaye was a musical genius, and we lost hm way too soon!
Marvin was a visionary. He not only wrote the lyrics to this beautiful song, he did the arrangement, played the piano and even recorded himself as background . The words are hauntingly prophetic and are even more relevant today. Gone too soon. R.I.P. Marvin. 💔💔🇨🇦🇨🇦
Loved it when the Soul Train DJ would say Mister M-a-r-v-I-n Gaye. Then Marvin would proceed to bust a move. Awesome. Great songs from MG.
I can't believe Brad never heard this! You've lived a sheltered life! Iconic. Great protest song, something lacking today. You have to appreciate the great talents of that era. I still can't believe Marvin's father ended his life. RIP.

I remember the day I heard the news break. One of those memories...vivid images of what I was doing and where I was, all these years ago, stayed with me.
one of the greatest songs ever from one of the greatest artists of all time , in the motown documentary it shows how Marvin put this song together , pure genius
This is one of the greatest start-to-finish albums of all time.
All time classic. It also features what is known as a 'flat six' modulation. The bulk of the song is in E Major but then modulates (changes key) to C Major, which is subtle and also dramatic.
One of the finest vocalists ever to have lived.
One of my top ten songs of all time.
One of the greatest singers of all time.
If only we followed this old school music into modern times we may be in a better place.. in the ideal world that is.. RIP Marvin!
Listen and Learn.Marvin was a prophetic master. What's Going On is organic and alive now as it was when Marvin released it in 1971.
Time to explore Marvin Gaye. He made so many good and deep music. Beginning with this album. But there are more. Don't hesitate!
This classic connects me to my soul, always...😌
Marvin doesn't get the love he deserves A music God in any category
The voice of marvin,marvellous
Marvin Gaye was the MAN.
Love how he overlapped his vocals. So beautiful
One of the greatest ever by one of the greatest ever.
Marvin, the silky smooth voice. He was a genius.
One of the greatest albums ever recorded... !!
Song is still relevant today....RIP Marvin
One of the best songs of all time. A Change is Gonna Come also.
"Trouble Man" is my absolute favorite song from him. The extended version.
the story was that Marvin called Barry Gordie late at night , and told him of a song he wrote and it was spirtual, it was this song, it is iconic and spiritual
1971 was a banner year for great albums, and this was one of the best.
This is such a Beautiful Message. We should all live by, if only we could see life like Marvin.
Yall need to do more Motown! 🎶 🎷
Took me a long time to realize this wasn’t a question but a statement. Really a perfect song.
one of the most beautiful things about the music of this era, was the lyrics were an attempt to look at our society and fix its ills...!!!!
Very iconic Vietnam war protest song. I remember every night on the news as a high school kid, watching the protests in the streets, and wondering if the war would end before I turned 18 and graduated. My Brother went to Vietnam 3 tears earlier. Everyone in every neighborhood across America, had a brother, cousin or friend, that was in Vietnam. The same could be said of WWII in the 1940s. War is always horrible, but sometimes necessary.
Smooooooooth bass line.
The most haunting line: "Father father, we don't need to escalate..." And it escalated to the point of his father shooting him to death on Apr 1, 1984 -- the day before Marvin's 45th birthday.
I thought when i clicked on i was going to get a better reaction to a beautiful song ... listen to the words man
This was truly a golden age in music.
"War is not the answer, for only Love can conquer Hate". Such a powerful line and one I have tried to live my life by. It's songs like this that still give me hope. Also, this is one of the most important songs ever written and recorded. The sad part is that this was released in 1971 and it's needed even more today.

I was just 3 houses down from Marvin when he was shot. I vividly remember my heart stopped for a second and my face immediately turning to my friend and asking him, "what's that gun fire?" ....Within seconds the sky was covered with news media helicopters. A moment I will never forget !!

In 2020, Rolling Stone magazine redid their 500 Best Albums of All Time list and put What's Going On as #1. This is the opening track and leads into an incredible collection of songs about a man coming home from Vietnam and seeing all the issues in the world, even beyond about the war.

This Brad & Lex is what we call Motown 😁🇨🇦 grew up across the Detroit River from Motown , this is lazy hazy summertime music .
How can you not know this song, are people living under a rock 😳
Lex, you have the ability to instantly get right into the groove . I grew up in Motown area in the 50s and 60s, Ray, Dionne, Marvin and Tammi, Stevie, Al Green, The Temptations, The Tops, The Supremes, Martha, Smokey, Roberta, Donny and gave me a life heart felt love of Soul music. All through the later decades, Isaac, Barry, Luther, Teddy, Anita, on and on, so many Great voices. This album dropped when I got back from Vietnam in 1971, it was on another level, the acclaim that it received was unbelievable. Wore out the vinyl over and over. This album is a masterpiece and you need to react to other songs on album. Inner City Blues, Mercy Mercy Me. Still considered top 5 albums ever made. Just ask your parents and grandparents about this album and what it meant to them. Changed my life. React to Lisa Fischer and her Grammy masterpiece, "How Can I Ease The Pain".
In Honor & Memory Of Him,, Curtis Mayfield "Move On Up" & "So In Love"...R.I.P. Curtis🙏❤
Your just hearing this? One of the greatest ever!
I can't even imagine hearing this soulful masterpiece for the first time in 2023. It would be like discovering a third hand.
MARVIN GAYE - Everybody Needs Love
Saw him in Seattle!!! 4 hr. Concert! We drove from Vancouver Canada to Seattle and it was well worth it! I still have the album!
Marvin is so smooth.
I'll never forget having to comfort my mother when Marvin Gaye was killed by his own father. I had never seen her cry at the death of someone famous.
Only Marvin - loved him - such an amazing talent. You had to be there in those days to get him.
The Master. Still relevant today. Bar none, my favorite song of ALL TIME. FUNK BROTHERS PLAY THE INSTRUMENTS. ❤️
Marvin Gaye is so smooth 🔥
Marvin's masterpiece!!!
Brad & Lex, you’ll love his “Lets Get It On", “I Heard Through the Grapevine", "Mercy Mercy Me" and "Can I Get a Witness"!!! Also his "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"(w/Tammi Terrell)!!

"What's Going On" was written by three golfing buddies who also happened to be Motown hitmakers: songwriter Al Cleveland, Four Tops member Renaldo "Obie" Benson and singer Marvin Gaye, who added lyrics and worked on the arrangement. Gaye wanted the Originals to record the song, but Benson and Cleveland prevailed upon Gaye to do it himself. Until this song, Gaye rarely participated in the songwriting process. For this album, he took control of the production so he could make a statement as an artist. Motown management was skeptical, but Gaye was an established star and had enough power to pull it off, going so far as to use an orchestra on this track. Gaye's lyrics in this song were inspired by the stories his brother Frankie told him when he came back from the Vietnam War. This was one of the first Motown songs to make a powerful political statement. Stevie Wonder and the Temptations were also recording more serious and challenging material, which was a radical departure from the Motown hits of the '60s. The song had a tremendous impact because listeners weren't used to hearing social commentary from Gaye. As Jackson Browne said in a 2008 interview with Rolling Stone: "No one was expecting an anti-war song from him. But it was a moment in time when people were willing to hear it from anybody, if it was heartfelt. And who better than the person who has talked to you about love and desire?" (Songfacts.com)
Oh man this brings back memories. Ecology, war, love not hate, ah I miss this. This is my favorite one by Marvin.
The beautiful dreams of a generation, which sadly melted away by the end of the 60's, pretty much like the cake left out in the rain at MacArthur Park.
The #1 song from the album that Rolling Stone once ranked #1 on its list of Top 500 Albums. Marvin Gaye was already an impressive pop hitmaker before he evolved into a more socially conscious and sophisticated singer, but still a hitmaker. No doubt you know his later Sexual Healing and Let's Get It On.
I think that Marvin Gaye did ALL of the vocals on this entire album. Produced by Quincy Jones.
At last! a reaction to the "The Prince of Soul"! Man!!
Symphony of soul!
Fantastic album…. One of the best ever recorded and definitely the pinnacle of his career…
I did a lyric analysis of this song when I was in 9th grade because of how chilling he made this song
GREAT, GREAT music when music was great.
This song has an emphatic message in the lyrics. Everything from 'war is not the answer', to 'only love can conquer hate'. I listened to "What's Going On" when it was released (1971). Now in 2023, I have another view of the lyric "Who are they to judge us Simply 'cause our hair is long?". Now I think about Dr.J, with his big afro. Back when he was in the ABA teams the Virginia Squires and the New Jersey Nets. "What's Going On" is such a impactful song that it has been covered by other vocalists and musicians. The Chaka Khan version on the "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown" the 2002 documentary on The Funk Brothers, is just one of my favorites. But, I remember that "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" as being the song I like best from his album.
That James Jamerson bass line is SICK!
Talk about one for Mama, bet she would sing every verse. Classic make out music. Simpler time, example of the struggles of growth. Sad ending for Marvin, Respect RIP.
RIP M. G.🔊☮️🌎

I live in Motown, this song never gets old....
Beautiful, beautiful song.
Kudos to Lex's father for introducing her to classics. Here's hoping you both continue that legacy with Jack. Such a powerful song!
This is the song that was playing as I drove my son to the airport when he went to boot camp
This song came out in a very difficult time when we had the Vietnam War going on lots of racial issues problems and times when the only thing that kept us together as people was music at least that’s my perspective. Marvin Gaye was true talent his words if you really sit down an analyze the words on this song shows you how we were living in those days
This song is freakin' timeless. These problems are always gonna be there, and the help and/or solution is there for all to see, and isn't gonna change, either. Sigh.
This song would be an instant number 1 hit if it were released tomorrow. The whole album is brilliant.
Background vocals and talking compliments of the 70s Detroit Lions..
The song's inspiration came from Renaldo "Obie" Benson, a member of the Motown vocal group the Four Tops, after he and the group's tour bus arrived at Berkeley on May 15, 1969. While there, Benson witnessed police brutality and violence in the city's People's Park during a protest held by anti-war activists in what was hailed later as "Bloody Thursday".Upset by the situation, Benson said to author Ben Edmonds that as he saw this, he asked, "'What is happening here?' One question led to another. Why are they sending kids so far away from their families overseas? Why are they attacking their own children in the streets?"
Great song from a great artist, such a real song
Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell had great hits before she passed early
Amazing timeless classic, still moves me
Check out "I want you" also. Unreal talent
The messages ring true for humanity ❤️❤️❤️❤️R.I.P. Sir 💔🕯️🥺✌️
Two of the background voices are the 1967 NFL Offensive & Defensive Rookies of the Year. Mel Farr & HOFer Lem Barney from the nearby Detroit Lions.
One of the greatest songs to come out of Motown. But also one of the saddest. Note the line “father, father, we don’t have to escalate “ only to him being killed by his father.
Hey guys what's up! I can't believe you're doing a reaction to this song. I have this album on original vinyl. Not a scratch. I was just listening to this album two days ago. You have to hear it on vinyl. You guys rock! God bless you! Peace!
My second favorite song of all time! The album this from is pretty great as well. It really was a stretch for Motown to put this out, a social observation. But the times, they be a changing. Marvin had a fantastic voice. You'll notice what sounds like background singer but it's Marvin. He's just grooving in the background. Coolness.
If you guys haven’t heard it already you should also give a listen to one of his heavily sampled songs called “I want you”
The Commodores had a tribute song to Marvin, "Nightshift". good song 👍
