But a game that’s already been forgotten about by everyone outside of the handful of people who still play it, many months after launch? Yea, there ARE no new players at this point, literally all they have is the shrinking existing playerbase. The only hope for getting new players at this point in the game’s life would be to improve the game so much that the current players hype the improved game up and pull more new players in by word of mouth. Which is the total opposite of what they’ve done here, they’ve just accelerated its demise by alienating the only players they have left.

It's funny and slightly endearing at this point how the devs really try to justify this change. Do they really believe people don't see through the PR bullshit? We're in 2021, well past beyond the "lootbox crisis". Gamers are more aware than ever of the AAA industry scam tactics. Speeding up the early stages of playthrough and slowing down the latter ones leads to the classical pacing strategy of mobile "free-to-pay" games. First the hookup that gets you hyped, the "honeymoon"stage. And when you're finally "engaged" the reality kicks in and you find yourself inmersed in the grind, willing to pay for shit that speeds it up like XP boosts, top-tier characters, gacha fuel or straight pay-to-win microtransactions. At least the game should go truly "free-to-pay" if they are implementing this shitty update.

I have to ask, has there ever been a case where the players ask/"demand" for longer grind (leveling progression, resources, etc)? I know people have complained about games being too easy but I dunno if that equates to some sort of longer grind. (then again, a shortcut to "difficulty" is basically grind with number buffing.) holy hell, that response... The only time leveling up quickly is an issue is when you are forced to spend the points on the spot, which even then depends on the game still. Wait, they made early leveling faster? Whoa, thats too big brain for me. But you know what, these devs really showed those other devs who decided to allow their players the full moveset early on (or at least by the end of the storyline). Clearly limiting the players full moveset to 30hrs post-story endgame for each character is the best move.

The reason they make early game progression faster and later game progression slower lies in psychology that is often applied similarly to f2p mobile games. You get an early influx of rewards and gameplay dynamism that serves to both get you emotionally invested in the game and to make you feel zero pressure with resources. Things like daily and weekly “missions” that drip-feed you resources are there to turn this feeling into a habit, to establish a sense of normalcy tied to not having to ration what the game gives you. Then after you have made a routine of logging into the game and progressing at a certain speed, progression slows, difficulty rises, and the rate at which both of these occurs begins to overshadow the rate at which you can feasibly gain the means to work around these problems. This wouldn’t be too big a deal in and of itself, but the game is designed to have spent weeks if not months to psychologically condition you to play in a certain easy and stress-free environment, an environment that they are now strategically taking away from you. So most people, consciously or subconsciously, form a desire to return to normalcy(the desire depends on the person. Some are mildly annoyed while others can legitimately get serious anxiety) and it is at this point that the game introduces monetized ways to return to that habitual game state. Maybe it’s a character that power creeps the current cast, maybe it’s an XP Booster, maybe it’s more stamina to access time gated resources, and hell some games are brazen enough to let you buy levels and top-rate equipment outright(the infamous VIP “red button simulators,” oftentimes). Of course, this isn’t complete without 1. simplified, gear-reliant gameplay that suppress skill and mechanical depth. Cue The Hulk not being able to handle foot soldiers of his gear score isn’t high enough. And 2. It wouldn’t be endlessly monetizable if it had a real end goal. Cue barebones story mode and unsatisfying gameplay loop. In short, this progression change is just them preparing to offer one do the aforementioned “solutions” to the problem they created. It’s step 1 in a multi-step process to squeeze more money on a tiny player base in a half-dead game before it finally kicks the bucket.

This kind of reminds me of what The Secret World did with it's re-release. Said that the ability wheel was too intimidating for new players(kind of is to be fair.) So they did away with it and way dumbed down skills, killing all ability/weapon synergies. Killed what I thought was a fun aspect, there was so much to play around with. Now it's pretty limited and basic.

Looking at what I'm hearing about Avengers, and comparing it to Persona 5 Strikers, it's night and day. In P5 Strikers, once you're done with the first 30-40 minutes of tutorials and story setup, and you actually enter the first dungeon for real, they straight up go "Ok, here's like 8 characters to play, all at once, all their core combos are unlocked. Go". I felt like the developers actually *trusted* me to take the time to learn how the stuff worked after the initial tutorial, and respected my intelligence. And they STILL had some meaningful upgrades to pick up along the way, despite having all the core fun stuff unlocked from very early on. .....Wait, hang on...WAIT, the devs for Avengers said they boosted the level curve EARLY ON??? But I thought they wanted players to take their time getting used to new moves??? Early on is when you're overwhelmed, by the time you're at the end of the game, you already know how the game works and aren't going to be overwhelmed, and thus you can gain tons of new moves quickly and all that'll do is engage you! This entire thing makes ZERO sense! :o

It wasn't exactly great at launch. I ended up playing it from around 2015 and just in the time I ended up playing it (from 2015 over 2016 and to Omega) there was a lot of stuff added and especially the monetization system was massively overhauled to make it more fair. Because it certainly wasn't from the beginning. I think I ended up spending something like $20 on it altogether and I got around half of the heroes in the game, by far most of them I got for free through gameplay. What I'm trying to say is that of the live services that have ended up good only really few were actually good from the start. From what I've heard WOW, Apex Legends and the two Guild Wars games are the main examples. The rest basically grew into it. I'm not saying that it's going to happen for Marvel's Avengers. It's probably not basically because they don't seem to have any grasp of what is actually wrong with the game. David Brevik certainly had an idea of the initial flaws of Marvel Heroes. It certainly is an uphill battle and I find it a lot more likely that it will go the way of Anthem than it doing a No Man's Sky...
