yeah, DiCaprio is solid but DDL has way way more charisma. The scenes without him in this film weren't interesting

DDL is such a gentle and soft spoken man . Hard to believe that he can play psychotic , ruthless and violent characters such as Bill The Butcher or Daniel Plainview.

There was so much character and color bubbling under Daniel's surface, it looked like he was about to burst into laughter or start crying at any moment. He's so attentive, he has the look of a man who's learned not to miss what's important.

Seeing him, DDL all "cleaned up" smiling, being joyfull kind of amazes me after seeing Bill the butcher and Daniel Plainview. He's a shapeshifter.

@@cindyinnew definitely the GOAT. He’s the Michael Jordan of acting. People try saying DeNiro or Brando or Oldman are better, which they definitely are great actors, they’re on my Mt Rushmore of acting. But DDL outshines all of them, he delivers performances that truly stay with you. Best there ever was hands down.

Daniel is much more than a phenomena he’s something else. Any character he takes on just comes alive. Imagine De Niro playing bill, completely different film. DDL, just takes years away, comes back and casually takes an Oscar, goes away, comes back and does the same thing again.

these two masters-at-their-own-crafts' ability two sit quietly and listen to what the other has to say without feeling the need to chime-in, shows how humble and appreciative they are.

We are witnessing greatness. Gangs was a good movie but let’s be honest it wouldn’t have been 1/3 as good w out DDL as Bill the Butcher. He is an absolute force of nature.

Acting comes so natural to Day Lewis and he's so forensic about it. You can tell he wouldn't know how to answer someone if they asked him the question what should they do to become a great actor. He's so naturally gifted and focused on craft that he just doesn't know how not to be great.

Thank God DeNiro passed on Bill’s role. Daniel’s acting is second to none. The film wouldn’t have been the same without him.

He is the true actor actor, not celebrity. All the other Hollywood stars, they are still what they are in films. DDL is in his character each time.

it’s awesome for an actor to realize that it’s not good for their mental health or happiness to work constantly, and to have the discipline but stay away despite everyone pulling back in. Kudos

I am so glad that DeNiro didn't want to do the part because he would not have pulled it off nearly as well as Lewis did

Daniel Day Lewis....... The perfect guide on which to learn skill of listening, thinking and then replying. If he chooses to share his time with you, you best be at your sincerest best and if you are you will get a man worthy of listening to.

Maybe watch Taxi Driver (for De niro), There will be blood (for Daniel Day-lewis), Raging Bull (for De Niro again), pulp fiction (for Sam Jackson, Travolta and Ema Thurman) and Inglorious Bastards (for Christoph Waltz) these are some great performances for an average mainstream audience

Fascinating how Lewis stares at Scorsese when he answers Rose’s questions. At first I thought it was purely shyness around Rose, but I wonder if he’s really looking at Scorsese for approval of the insights he’s giving. It’s almost like he inhabits a character so completely that once he’s done with that character he can’t even remember playing him.

DDL is that one performer who is outrageously multifaceted and It's not until you look at his entire body of work that you realize how diverse a performer he is. He was stunning in Lincoln, My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood. He was brilliant in Age of Innocence, In The Name of The Father and The Boxer. The totality of the roles he's played collectively is nothing less than spectacular. His talent is unparalleled and in my opinion, he's one of the greatest and most powerful actors who ever performed. Hell, if they made a movie about my life, DDL would play me better than I could...

Everybody in this movie was outstanding, but DDL stood head and shoulders above everybody. Looking and listening to him in this interview and thinking about him as Bill is so far apart. The testament to great acting.

"Weinstein is great" and "George Lucas is the master of digital effects" might be the most 2002 statements ever.

This is one of the best interviews I've ever seen...

DDL played one of the most complex, convincing villains in film history. Brilliant in every scene.

No matter how many times I have seen this movie, I am amazed at the acting ability of Daniel. I just sit and watch him amazed at the talent that pours from him. He stole the show. He is the one who stood out. He is such a gentle soul and to be able to pull the character of Bill the Butcher from within. He throws himself into the character he plays. It is a shame that he is not making any more movies..

Very enjoyable interview, great discussion.

One of the greatest actors of all time. Only a few can bring a character to life like DDL.

He goes all in when he's in a movie,imagine being married to someone who changes so fully for an entire length of a movie shoot. DDL goes out,Bill the Butcher comes home. Absolutely loved it. Keep watching it over and over again. Daniel Day Lewis is utterly fantastic. Too bad he has quit.

Martin wasn't wrong when he said he thinks Daniel has a rage inside of him. Sometimes you can see it behind his eyes, almost murderous, which he managed to tap into for the film. Daniel is one the best actors ever lived, but he must have some rage inside of him for real to capture it so well when acting.

D D L. Such a wonderfully odd quirky intense awkward brilliant fellow. The man runs so deep it takes all his might to sort out the roiling traffic jam of thoughts and feelings competing for expression. Fascinating.

Rewatched Gangs last night- i actually teared up during this interview- understanding and identifying with the creative brilliance of DDL anf MS- big thumbs up

Watching this and hearing Scorsese talk about Silence... It's cool to see that he FINALLY got it made... And how most of these "Masterful Movies" have taken 20-30 years to be made.

This and There Will Be Blood are my favourite Daniel Day Lewis roles. He is the ultimate villain in this film... I’d say Bill The Butcher and Anton from No Country For Old Men probably the best villains of the last few decades.

I imagine he has an intensity to him naturally even when he is being his everyday self. As a method actor he must have some deep intensity he draws from.

Robin Williams made the funniest endearing joke about Scorsese's eyebrows at some awards show.. He said "They look like two mating caterpillars.." LOL cracks me up when I see this @ 01:13

I can really understand someone like Daniel Day Lewis’s caution around rolls that require so much rage, just from my reaction to watching intense movies. Without realizing or intending, I take on the mannerisms of key characters in the great movies I watch, for several hours after watching it. It’s mild, but enough for my wife and former girlfriends to have mentioned it. I can’t imagine the effect and duration it would have on me if I immersed myself in becoming a character, for months. Especially when you have to come to some understanding of intense violence and anger and other destructive elements. It must be incredibly traumatic.

Notice how at the 10:14 mark when Daniel is asked what he was doing for those 5 years, there's almost 20 seconds of what seems like awkward time where Scorsese seems to know something and clearly Daniel won't disclose what he did for those 5 years. I found that interesting, not sure it was a case of what he was doing, more like a case of where he went for those 5 years.

He is such a natural actor, he can't even use words to describe what he is doing, if he were a math genius and solving complex problems all the time, and some teacher was all like "show ur werkz or u get an F" he would be all like "ah, jeez, well you ask such a question of me, what do i even say? how do i write down the quantum infinity of my mind on a single piece of paper? your asking a difficult thing of me, I just do math, thats it--'" He does the same thing with acting, he can't (or wont) explain his methods, because i think they are so deep inside of him that it would be the equivalent of asking someone exactly what going in to their method of walking, or eating.....most people would say "well i put one foot in front of the other, and place food in to my mouth and chew....what do you want?" either that or he made a pact with a Faerie and his contract doesn't allow him to explain things.....any things XD "explaining things is forbidden, you must act everything out" better yet, he made the pact with the Faerie and it was like "i want to be a great craftsman" and he got that but the contract made it so he couldn't explain anything to anyone, only act it out....so in acting things out all the time he became a great actor, but he just wants to go and make a dove-tail box and a pair of shoes to go in the box, and movies are just the thing he does to get more wood and shoe-making money.

@@AA-sn9lz because Scorsese himself had DeNiro in mind for the role, since way back in the late 70's when he first began thinking and planning on making a movie about this. Had he made it all those years ago, DeNiro might have indeed been the best possible choice for the role of Bill. But since he didn't, and because it didn't end up seeing the light of day until when it finally did, I think Daniel was certainly the right man for the job, in the time it was made. I disagree. I think that DeNiro would have been amazing in that roll. Just because we didnt see him play it , doesnt mean that he wouldnt have been good.

@@MrCris2021 Look up pictures of DeNiro from around the time Gangs was released. He was already too old and out of shape looking. You can't tell me that he would have had the edge over D.D.L in the time it was made. Now if we were talking about a Mean Streets or Taxi Driver era Bobby, well then by all means, definitely... But for the love of God, the role and character of Bill The Butcher could not have been better portrayed by an "Analyze That" Robert DeNiro! Let's be sensible here...

I would pay a theatre ticket just to see DDL sitting alone silently in an armchair for 1h 20m.

Basically half of There Will be Blood.

At one time I saw Scorsese say very proudly "I'm a American film maker. I tell stories". That really bothered me. I thought he was provincial and American movies to exclusion of others are superior. More recently I saw him say that he admired Italian and Polish cinema. That weight finally dissapaited. Legendary director with list of classic movies. Thanks from my heart Martin.

I watched Gangs of New York again the other day, an amazing film with a mesmerising and simply magnificent performance by DDL - he is the best actor ever imo.

He’s just a great actor.. probably top 5 best of all time..

DDL is sort of cut from the same cloth as Heston, McQueen,Newman,Eastwood,Bronson and Marvin. However, Yul Brynner comes to mind most times.

in some parts Scorcese looks at Daniel in a strange way like scared (scared is not the best word for It) lol but I think it was the memories on set

It’s more to do with Daniels intensity.. he isn’t a people person, he’s said that a few times..

I have never given Daniel Day Lewis in my personal persona the acting credit this man deserves. I don’t even believe Hollywood (these people) have given Him the credit he deserves. I’m sure he has been compensated well for his work. But, unlike other actors, he doesn’t act, he literally becomes the character .....................if you are watching for more than just temporary entertainment, how often do you recognize these professional characteristics?

Now i know if i meet DDL keep my questions strictly about his characters and not him... interviewer shoulda picked up on that.

sorry I had to rush with this comment 13 minutes into the interview, but I felt the urge to share how much in awe I am of DDL's genuineness which adds to his charisma, considering how diverse he can be upon entering a character, whoever it may be

Everyone who loves him, make sure you see him in “My Left Foot”. Mind blowing.
