Martin McGuinness: The path from violence to peace

Martin McGuinness has died at the age of 66.
The former Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister - and former IRA chief-of-staff - passed away in Derry following a short illness.
He helped end 30 years of conflict in the country by agreeing to join the country's power sharing executive, but the man was a controversial figure in his political past.
Our Ireland Correspondent David Blevins reports.

Ulster was British when he was born and British when he died - McGinness failed ... the pain and suffering he caused for people on either side of the divide were all for naught. He dies in the eyes of decent honest man as a coward and a murderer.

Like many young men he thought violence was the only way to protect his land from foreign invaders. (Imagine a burglar breaks into your house, what would your initial reaction be?) As he matured into a great leader and visionary he changed that path and walked the road of peace. Everybody in this world deserves a second chance. The amount of sacrifice and personal risks he took should be appreciated by both sides of the divide for without him our wee country would not be the example to the world it is today.

this is a collection of false misstatements the likes of which have not been heard since 1972. British media refer to opposition leaders who seek release from oppressive government policy as terrorists. Washington, Jefferson and Franklin were also such leaders. The difference is we won. Martin McGuinness did not live long enough to see a United Ireland. 800 years of British terror and occupation of Ireland ended in 1916 for all but 6 counties. RIP... Martin McGuinness

I don’t support violence but I do support the struggle to end all occupations anywhere they exist. 🇮🇪🇺🇸

Violence was a necessity, peace was only achievable through it. Sons of Ireland shook the foundation of Britain bringing and end to their tyrannical behavior. It hurts that he and many others who had to run off to war against a vastly more equipped force won't be here to see our country reunified. All we can do is keep voting Sinn Fein and regardless of the "terrorist" accusations we remember Martin McGuinnes and every other lad who died will be the founding fathers of the inevitable new one Ireland. The Bloody Sunday Inquiry did not find that Guinness carried a machine-gun on the day. This is utter nonsense, I know this because I was a witness to the event, and as such I was supplied with all the legally verified statements of those involved. The IRA on the day agreed with the NICRA to withdraw from the Bogside to ensure a peaceful protest against imprisonment without trail - internment. The British State simmply went into the Bogside to teach the natives a lesson.

Menachem Begin was the leader of the notorious IRGUN in British mandate Palestine. He personally directed the blowing up of the King David Hotel among other acts of violence. Begin went on to be elected Prime Minister of Israel and negotiated (with the help of the USA) a peace deal with Egypt. Nelson Mandela and Eamon deValera were other men who went from violence to peace. McGuinness was not the first.
