Martin Lathe Electrical Panel #1

Working on the redo of the electrical panel for the Martin Lathe. I did NOT look into the electrical box before buying this machine, lesson learned. I am not saying it would have stopped me from buying but I would have probably bargained harder.

Great work. Nice to have fused circuits. Nice to have safety circuit. Panel work looked great. Thank you for sharing.

No doubt! Mystery wiring is always worrisome. "Hmmmm, I wonder where that goes and will it shock the piss out of me?"

A bit of smoke em up action behind the cover ! I wonder if the clutch linkage wore through some wires at some point . Cheers .

Open the box, instant confusion. That's how it was with my surface grinder. Some critter got in there, must have thought it was Speaker of the House because I found the schematic in shreds 🙄 Many hours standing on my head, tracing wires, making notes, and drawing rough diagrams on the inside of the panel door. It makes sense now. I had to make a few changes to get it to work with a static converter, which involved making sure none of the control circuits were tied to the "A" (created leg) output wire.

i like your use of a relay to operate the high voltage starter coil. did you consider using the latching contacts in the motor starter so you could use momentary start /stop buttons? also i see you have no provisions to reverse the motor electrically. is there another way to accomplish this?

If I remember right, his lathe is like mine. Where the motor powers the gearbox but also a hydraulic pump and it uses hydraulic clutch packs for forward, reverse and brake. So the motor can only spin in one direction in order to provide the hydraulic flow.

There is reversing capabilities built into the gearbox

I have no idea why a lathe would need so many wires! I was looking at the control panel on a Monarch lathe the other day and I thought why in the world is this so complicated! Maybe the lathe makers had a brother-in-law that sold wire...lol!

There are two I have identified that are for a safety switch that goes on the cover for the change gears. And I know that the lathe is supposed to have a spindle brake of some kind. Not sure what kind, I just know that it is 24volts DC and the machine originally had a transformer just for the brake. Not going to be able to identify that without pulling the top off.

James, can you change the coil on the starter to 24v coil? I know on the ones I have worked on that was possible. (if obsolete I understand the workaround)

No, dont think a 24v coil is available for the size 2 509. I stand to be corrected, but I cant find one for that size. 110, 240, and 480 are common

@@jtkilroy Size 2 24v 60hz coil is part # CC013. Probably cheaper to use the relay. Some of the oddball AB parts are pricey.

Any reason you prefer the on switch to override if both buttons are pressed? I usually wire it so the off switch wins, also because there are sometimes E-Stops in series with that.

@@jtkilroy I guess another reason could be if someone wants to "bump" the machine with the start button while the stop is held in, this way it doesn't latch on. My bandsaw came wired so that even the e-stop doesn't override. I'm sure it's not at all kosher but I use it to bump the blade on with the e-stop latched.
