Although I am a Chinese and it is always nice for ppl to praise ur race or civilisation, but I think this intellectual has "over- exaggerate" or overestimate China.I just hope when China becomes No 1 in future, it will remain humble ,remembering that pride and complacency in the past has led them to downfall and then to 150 yrs of humiliation.

I think he is probably a paid shill of the CCP. China has made some very great achievements, and its rapid development in infrastructure is a feat to behold in the last 60 years, almost unseen by any other country in the world. However, his whole lecture is basically making political arguments for China in relation to Taiwan and the way in which it governs. The argument about China needing to be state dominant/tyrranical is based on China's size, yet America is larger in size geographically. If its a question of population, India has a similiar population to China. China isn't a "civilization state" and he never clearly defines what a "civilization state is" beyond an abstract construct used to justify Tianmen and other atrocities in the name of the CCP. He'd have a better time arguing that a strong government is required, like it was in Russia, due to high levels of corruption, and that the country can only ever transition into a democracy only after all corrupt officials are routed out. Although, the west has huge corruption problems as well, so do not know how much that argument holds water.

@stealthpakfa as it well should be with 1 billion inhabitants. But the growth rate will inevitably slow down. It has with every industrialised country in history. There were times u.s and europe had these growth rate. An economy becomes saturated.

@xiongmu Taiwan has been found before Ming Dynasty. That island used to be a colony of Holland.

@@shiulai5804 Well it didn't. Untill Holland colonised and made it a country it was just a bunch of different tribes/indigenous people. A bit like how Germany didn't exist until Prussia unified the region. Or England didn't exist until King Alfred.

@MrAudacity11 did he mean racism? He said Chinese had a strong cultural identity so does the rest of Asia. How would my last name suggest racial superiority? What he said is mostly correct. When did I make a distinction with Americans?

Discovered means to make known to the world, the Native people did not make them selfs known to the world, so yes the Europeans did discovered or make known to the world of America.

Very excellent summary of China... I am very impressed. I didn't know China invented golf... wow. However, if you use PPP, China will overtake USA even earlier, in 2017. Also, Taiwan is a province of China, you don't need to list it separately from China.

  • @Serfdomftw

Golf was invented in Scotland not china. The Chinese claim is one among many made by China to try and make itself seem like an innovation hub, compared to its current public image as copycat thieves. The Chinese claim itself is from a scroll that shows a ball hitting game simliar to golf. The Romans had such a game over a millenia before this scroll. A flemish manuscript references colf/kolf 100 years before the Chinese manuscript. So the chinese claim is a bunch of bullshit. Also this supposed intellectual is a complete shill for china. Probably paid for it. Looked at his melbourne lecture, goes on to claim that China is not a nation state but a state of civilization, and it can't rule itself like a nation state because of its size. The USA is larger than china in land mass. He also states that through 4 surveys the chinese people are the most satisfied with China much more than any other western state. Completely glosses over the fact that China is a dictatorship so anti-government sentiment is dealt with in a very harsh manner.

Not sure if people are scared of China or not. Just realize China has been a super power of the world in the past, and will be again. History repeats itself. It's normal. So if you worry, stop worrying, learn some Chinese. Enjoy.

@MrAudacity11 I don't have to read a book . I went there for my university studies. I am talking about the people. The same people who stood infront of tanks. Benevolent compared to the west.

True. China culture is extremely different from Africa and the west.I think African would be more comfy with West cos their culture is much more closer than compared to China. Also considering the west has been dominating the world for nearly 300 yrs, the world has got accustomed to the western way of living. But friend, I can very safely tell u that when China become stronger and stronger,it wont dominate the world. 2 reasons:in future ,there will be other powers rising too ,like India ...

just like America continent was "discovered" by western people and they were acting like the millions of millions of native Indian people who had been living on this land for generations and generations were not existing?

Taiwan under the rule of the Qin Dynasty/ (shown on the map at 5:37) C'mon Jacques, the Qin government barely knew that the island existed. The Chinese government couldn't even, and really didn't want to, control Taiwan until the 19th century.

I too am a Chinese, very proud of our heritage; I am therefore confident that China will always remain humble because of the teachings of Confucius who has a very profound influence on our philosophy. I am surprised that the sage has not been mentioned in any of Mr Jacques' lectures
