    She gets called a one-hit wonder, for this song that went to number 1 for two weeks, but she had several other top 40 hits as well in the 80s. Before she went solo as a musician, she was on an 80s show called Kids Incorporated that was on the Disney Channel, sort of a like the Mickey Mouse Club before the 90s MMC of Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and other stars. It gave her a built in audience of fans like myself. Kids Inc launced a lot of stars besides Martika, including Fergie, Mario Lopez, and Jennifer Love Hewitt.

    I actually remember seeing her in the show "Kids Incorporated" and having had a massive crush on her back in those days and the fact that the show originally aired in syndication it aired on WCOV Channel 20 in Montgomery Alabama and I had wanted to watch the show so badly that I'd literally stayed up all night on Friday night just so I'd be able to watch "Kids Incorporated" at 6AM on Saturday morning because of the fact that I didn't get up that early during the week, let alone on a Saturday and I didn't even have a working VCR Suffice to say, all of my friends and family thought I'd lost my marbles because of this

    Martika wrote the song about a friend who was battling a cocaine addiction. That’s where the line “How could I be so blind to this addiction, one falling star, the next one’s gonna be me” fits in to the lyrics. By the way, Martika’s friend conquered their cocaine addiction in an interview she did later.

  • @john_thorpe

    @john_thorpe

    @@BillGraper Actually with the opening line I think that she was the addict that got her friend addicted ... this is just my guess based on the opening "It wasn't my intention to mislead you, it never should have been this way, what can I say ... It's true I did extend the invitation ....." and with the line "If I don't stop, the next one's gonna be me." makes me think they both were addicts and that she introduced the drugs to her friend. But of course all songs can be left up to interpretation.

    This hits hard... I’ve had family who struggled with addiction, and they were able to overcome it. However, this past week I lost a friend to a drug addiction. The lyrics in this song are powerful, and I think the metaphor is a strong one... especially “never win, but the battle wages on...” addiction in a nutshell. Even if you overcome, the thoughts of fulfilling that addiction are always in the back of your mind. It really is a war!

    “Stop” is my fave pop song of all time. Sam Brown is amazing. When that song came on in the late ‘80s in a Chicago department store (Marshall Fields), I dropped everything in disbelief at her incredible voice singing that masterpiece.

    Martika was so good! She was on a show called K.I.D.S. Incorporated in the 80's (so was Fergie from Black Eyed Peas!), but they wouldn't keep her once she hit 18. This was her solo attempt after the show. They sang song covers in every episode. You can find some clips on YT. Renee Sands was also fantastic. She was in the kids chorus (along with a few other cast mates) of this song.

    I find it funny that when we're younger, a lot of us don't really interpret the lyrics even though we know them word for word. It's not until we're older that we do a deep dive into the songs meaning. For example, "Paradise" by Phil Collins ... I knew the lyrics word for word when I was younger, but it wasn't till I was older that I caught what the song was about.

    This song is from the movie Toy Soldiers (1991) that starred Sean Astin and Wil Wheaton. I found this online: This song is about drug addiction and how drugs can control you like children control their toys - Metallica's "Master Of Puppets" has a similar theme. In an interview that aired on VH1, Martika said that she wrote this song about a friend who was hooked on cocaine.

    I was really into Martika as a teen, She is beautiful to me, and she reminded me of the actress Phoebe Cates who I was head over heals for back then. I like this song and wish I could find more music by her. A little fun tidbit Martika is at least part Cuban, one or both of her parents came to America at some point. I just can't remember for sure if she is full Cuban or Half, not that it matters just some of my useless trivia knowledge lol.
