    Everybody always reacts to the Legend of Drunken Master, but never the first one. I think it's cool in the lore of Drunken Master that there are, I think, ten drunk styles that he has to learn. The drunken flute player, the drunk with a bad leg, the drunk with a barrel in his hand, the drunk lady... There's a cool scene in the first one where he trains and demonstrates all of the drunk styles.

    The final fight, 8 Drunken Immortals. You'll be able to see how they're chiefly depicted like so (not in sequence)... Tieguai Li - Lame in one leg with iron crutch. Han Xiangzi - A flautist. Zhang Guo Lao - An old man with a donkey. He Xiangu - Young woman with a large lotus flower Cao Guojiu - Middle-aged politician with a clapper (something like a castanet) Lan Caihe - Intersex, flower basket. Lu Dongbin - A swordsman. Han Zhongli - Man holding giant fan.

    I love jackie chan movies not only because of the entertaining way he fights but also how much effort he puts in. Making those fights work with wide shots, long scenes and difficult stunts that take ages to get right ( like the bottle scene you pointed out), you can really feel the fight and dedication behind. unfortunatly martial arts movies like this don't get made anymore lots of cuts, different camera angles that take a lot of fluidity out.

    That jump double spin (fake 720 or whatever you want to call it) is just legendary. That's the amazing thing about Jackie Chan movies. It's approachable for the audience member who just wants something entertaining and maybe funny, but if you're a serious martial artist you HAVE TO appreciate the incredible level of skill involved. One of the few ever who could pull off making something that intricate and complicated look buffoonish and comedic.

    With drunken fist there are two principles that apply. The first is knowing how and when to tense and having the muscle control to relax all of you. It is a lot like the principles in popping and locking. The other is every action must have an equal and opposite reaction. If you watch closely you can see how he uses a lot of circular motion on one side to drive the power on the other, especially with the hands. Often you'll see one hand moving forward as the other moves back but it's in a half circle motion, long or short, depending on how he wants to generate power. It's a very circular style, as are many Chinese arts and that feeds into the weapon styles which are also far more circular in effect than many of the arts from other cultures, especially eurocentric.

  • @thaddeusrobinson6866

    @thaddeusrobinson6866

    2 жыл бұрын

    Agreed. Those principles also provide a lot of lot of room for deception, which is the whole reason for the drunken aspect: The trick is to APPEAR drunker than you actually are; you want your opponent to underestimate you. Being somewhat drunk probably improves flexibility and pain tolerance, but this style requires unbelievable balance and control; something you would lose if you were seriously inebriated. Also, to your second point, the action/reaction aspect has an additional function: it's sleight of hand to mask where your true attacks are coming from. What might look like a staggering off balance flail is secretly perfectly balanced and full of calculated power. I think it would be like the difference between an accidental backhand and a full on spinning backfist; one is incidental contact, the other is a sincere attempt to knock your head off lol.

    Just to mention if not already: the dad did mention the restrictions of the drunken fists- you have to get it right the amount of alcohol you drink, you do not get drunk, you have to get it to a stage which your body is numb. When your body do not feel pain anymore, that is where this fist gets its power from. Without pain, you attack harder, faster with no fear. But the problem is your body will get used to this, and your body will need more alcohol each time to reach this stage, until you become a total alcoholic. That is why the dad restricts him in using this skill as much as possible.

    When he smiles and put the fingers out he is using the immortal woman He. Originally drunken boxing was called zui ba xian quan: 8 drunken immortals boxing, based on the figure of this 8 mythological immortals. The drunken style is basically 8 styles in one, so every immortal you imitate has a distinctive technique. For example when he is balanced on one leg it is the immortal Li a cripple that walks with one cane, when he move the hands to the sides is a flutist, when he moves around the hands like holding a barrel is another immortal, etc. For this film tho Jackie created his own techniques as well, for example the cork opener when he jumps head front rotating his body. Your observation about being able to absorb hits is correct, also being a Taoist style it tries to be very fluid and imitate nature by using circular motions. The use of gravity is also very important in drunken style, you could let your body fall like a rag doll but in a controlled matter, kinda like when you are drunk and lose balance but try to gain balance again... if used in the right way it makes it really hard for the opponent to predict your next move and also allows for weird attacks like backwards graving the throat with the wine cap hand... also this hand is very strong when you turn it and you hit with the end of the arm and combining it with the elbow absorption and attacks moves is really powerful.

    Thank you for not being overly critical about movie fight scenes. There are a lot of “instructors “ who ruin it.

    The most important aspect of these fight scenes is fun (especially Jackie Chan) so I always try and take them the way they are intended and not too seriously c:

    0:27 I believe that is Ho-Sung Pak. He modeled for Liu Kang and Shang Tsun in Mortal Kombat & Mortal Kombat 2 and also starred in the 1995 TV series WMAC Masters as well as roles in movies like Bloodrayne. Going by Wikipedia, he mainly works as a stunt man now.

    In the Docs My Story or My Stunts Jackie talked about how in these movies to help him appear drunk on screen he’d put his head between his legs & let the blood rush to it so he’d go bright red lol & then the veins showing as well

    I always, ALWAYS wanted to learn Drunken Fist, but could never find an instructor. My former sifu, finally got irritated and told me in no uncertain terms - He did not teach Drunken Fist. Of course what *REALLY* baked my noodle..? was that he then proceeded to tell me, in gruesome detail, the level of conditioning required, before one should even consider studying Drunken Fist. Long story short..? upon hearing how how hilariously lacking I was, I opted for his Chen style Tai Chi classes. (I also suspect he didn't want me barfing on his floor, which was possible, given that back then I tended to block w/my head...) Jackie was no spring chicken when he filmed Legend of Drunken Master, so I can only guess how badly he ached after each shoot... Nice vid. Thanks for sharing it.

    Jackie is doing the "gods", one by one, when he smashes his opponents, the lady with a flute, the fat man with barrels, ect.

    i had never done "druken fist" BUT there was one TAO in my style of taichi ( fighting type) that was based on it! You don't forcibly drink will fighting drunking style you act like drunk mostly! The basis was to be unpredictable and more than "resisting" a hit taking it and using the momentum! For exemple if a hit thow you on the floor you have technics for the time you hit the floor and for when you ARE on the floor same with "out of balance" "showing your back" and everything! the very basic is to be able to fight in any positions with the most unpredictability possible! it's too said to most of the time smile weirdly and move weirdly to throw of guard your oponent without him bein able to " read" your movements! It's an unortodox technic that like all tech have good and bad part but the main goal is to disturb your oponent with your acting and strange movements! it's Hard for most non practitioners of the arts or "derivated" arts to undertand the ectic style wich is the goal! If a brain can process on a fighting style he will take time to be able to have a gasp on your movements and that will delay hus action! i hope i was clear, but don't forget you don"t need to be drunk or even drink to use it you must more " don't know yourself what you will do next"!

    The first drunken master movie explains some of the "lore" from the style. The moves come from different deities, and at least one deity is a female. Which explains the eye poke moves and the more feminine stances
