The Ravel concerto is one of the MOST difficult pieces for keeping the orchestra and piano rhythmically in sync! The bassoonist and trumpet especially.

Yes, there is no doubt she knows the tapestry of this work by heart, she can probably hear the cadenzas and rhythms almost in her sleep...having played it continuously for all of her professional life - and she does it with complete mastery! Still a difficult work to play, not least for the orchestra. There's a beautiful video of her playing the languid slow movement in Paris a couple of years ago, with the orchestra conducted by Emmanuel Krivine. Her playing is adorable and the music seems to be about the slow passage of time and memory, in an almost Proustian sense - it's especially easy to see it that way for all those of us who have listened to her for decades and can remember early photos and record ccovers of her with that glowing black mane of hair, now turned silvery grey... kzread.info/dash/bejne/nJmpu8Zxns_actI.html

Her comments at 9:00 are so touchingly sad. It must be bittersweet, having lived as a titan of the piano and a citizen of the world, to revisit old haunts without the comfort of familiar faces and friends. My heart goes out to her. It has been a privilege to have the first few decades of my life overlap with hers, and I hope she has joy and peace during these uncertain times.

Argerich and Dutoit performed at Teatro Colón a couple of weeks ago. It was gorgeous!

I think we can say that Ravel's concerto in G, is, and will be, one of the most beautiful piece of music ever written.

What a beautiful relationship, even after divorce!

What a cool and fascinating inside look at how a top-notch soloist, conductor, and orchestra get a really complex concerto ready for performance.

This is a conductor's job. Not just to lead, but to shape and hear what the various sections can't. Also, as in the case of any concerto, to ensure a good dialogue between solo instrument and orchestra.

The 2nd movement was SO beautiful…..Ravel was a great orchestrator…..amongst other things….

Martha introduced me to the Ravel in the 1960's via an LP purchase. Then l watched her later playing it again in vision ( on TV) and was mesmerised by her eloquent mastery of the keyboard and the ever so challenging score. A raven haired beauty touched a special place in my deep affection for this concerto. To this day l treasure Martha's recordings as a genuine privilege.

Nobody knows what the hell she was reacting to...disappointment that he was going to be traveling out of the country? off the continent? to the USA? as far away as California? or a number of other possibilities that could easily have absolutely nothing to do with anything specific to "Los Angeles." It’s interesting how it’s not only the music that’s taken into account but also the interpersonal relationships within the people in the orchestra. He mentioned things like their mood, the weather, their blood pressure etc. This has taught me that music interweaves the musician’s character and the technical aspects which reflects in their performance and their effect on the audience.

Oh, the joys of rehearsing piano and orchestra! No one would ever guess what goes into it. Thank you for sharing!!!

I love Mrs Argerich's playing. There is something so light in her playing and she is imho the best to bring the changes of emotions in the music to our ears. I cannot listen to many pianists, some make me nervous... idk why.

Ravel and Prokoviev; certainly two formative composers in Argerich's performances; or even composers influenced by her - in terms of their perception in concert life. . However, it is astonishing what a distinctive sound this woman is able to produce on the piano. Over the decades, it makes one wonder how the sound of these recordings would have come about. After a concert visit, or even such an audiovisual excerpt, it becomes clear: through Martha Argerich's performance. There are not too many pianists in history (at least those whose discography is documented) who have been able to achieve such a sound culture.

@@pineapple7024 Hmmm... Possibly, you are correct, as evidence of this theory is a bit 'sus' (as today's kids say). However, these references: 1)"Alajouanine Th. Aphasia and artistic realization. Brain. 1948" and 2)"Kerner D. Ravels Tod. München Med Wochen. 1975", although speculative, are where this theory likely emanates(i.e., I didn't just make it up). Ravel composed the two Piano Concerti more or less concurrently (1929-1931). Still, he set out to write "a" Piano Concerto as early as 1906 and experienced fits and starts before completing the two many years later. So it is possible he had earlier material to work from. My musical ear tells me, as great as the Piano Concerti are, they don't have the same lushness or depth of say La Valse(piano transc.), Gaspard De La Nuit, or Daphis Et Chloe, all earlier works. Bolero, while entertaining, is not in the same class as the other pieces mentioned IMO.

Aw man... I played trumpet in high school, my technical skills were okay, but I was really bad at actually playing as part of an orchestra. I had a poor sense of rhythm and tempo, I somehow couldn't listen to what everyone else was doing, so I kept on coming in early, or late, or playing too fast. So watching this genuinely gave me anxiety... being in an orchestra with arguably the world's best soloist and conductor is literally like a stress nightmare for me... Interesting though :P

Don't forget: the orchestra members aren't there on coincidence. Of course it can be stressful to be picked out especially as first chair. But in the end they're all high class musicians.

You just need to learn Bach two part and three part inventions on piano to learn the skill of listening to others while playing your parts. Trust me. It will train your spatial intelligence (right brain) and ears.

It's a skill that most people can learn. Trust me, once you have learned it, you will unlock alot of your musical potential, and playing well in an orchestra becomes something within your abilities and your enjoyment will reach another level. It happened to me.
