Argerich has gone through many trials in her life but she has overcome them as one can hear in this matchless performance, just appreciate the phrasing and how she puts heart and soul into the music. All the superlatives about Ms Argerich fail to adequately describe her amazing gifts. She is in the 'legendary' class of pianists with Rubenstein,Ashkenasy,Perahia.Kissin and perhaps a few more of the last 50 years.

I think all the pianists you listed are flawed they are recognizable talents yes but their weaknesses are often as big as their strengths. I know they were all recorded in the legendary pianists of the XXth century CD series last century but still. Argerich is unique too and she has her way of being very idiosynchratic. Overal i think her brewing volcano temperament does not match this concerto well. It sounds like an irritated person that goes through bouts of quietness between war. Her touch is very delicate but somehow not equal. Her forte are strong stronger than most men (that's kind of a compliment). She is not my kind of artist you have guessed. Somehow her delicate phrasing is unmusical. @8:32 is an example of that. She plays with sounds not music. She takes huge liberties with the tempo shortening some notes making constant micro rubatos that take the sap out of the music.

In each one of the great soloists we can appreciate different traits and reliefs of these masterworks, and this is the most important thing, instead to quarrel about who is "the best". But Martha offers a calm, irony, serenity and joy when she plays, that contrasts very much with the effort and the anguish showed by most of the other musicians.

Because Martha technical skills allow her to focus exclusively on the music - she doesn’t need to put together a performance or a show - her music speaks and her huge mastery allows her to play and enjoy the piece rather than obsessing with the search of perfection like some young pianists do- the conclusion is that many pianists sound like robots Martha never does😀

I am often very impressed and touched by the performances of this piece by the younger generation. And they deserve it. But this is complete mastery, not only by Martha but also with the sensitive and delicate conducting from Pappano and the orchestra. There is poetry in every phrase, delicacy and power. But it's played with such union that it feels like a chamber piece. Bravo, Antonio, brava Martha.

Sure. I listened her playing Bartok third concerto Paris last autumn and was very impressed. However I was never convinced by her way to play Bach. Here, her mobility ideal for romantic music become nervousness, and I prefer Tatyana Nikolaievna and Alicia de la Rocha, whose I permit to suggest you A minor English suite. Bests.

+Hospitality61 Many thanks for your valuable comments. I will take these recommendations into account. Bach is really a fascinating composer, no less so as his music seems to be a favorite of late contemporary composers perhaps even more than early- and mid-20th century composers. All the best.

Absolutely: Bach made synthesis of music preceding him, and successors couldn't make other than to use technique he built. Stravinsky every morning studied a Bach choral and indeed second Vienna School developed twelve sounds technique with polyphony art of Bach. But you know it of course. Bach seems to me the prototype of modern artist, who as Noe build an arch in which he put all which exists to lead that to an another country. So does Balzac for the novel. Modern artist looks for a way using code that contemporary can understand but subverting it to express his subjectivity and new code. I developed this idea about french writer Giono and can give you my paper (in french if you are interested). Bests.

The one thing I notice about her are her hands. She has a bit of nail but not so long that it obviously doesn't inhibit her playing and her hands are the most beautiful hands I've seen on a pianist. Quite frankly her hands are the most beautiful hands I've ever seen. Period. Then to watch her flow flawlessly over the 88 keys is a sight beholden to angels.

she has an affinity for Schumann, more so than, say, Chopin or Beethoven. it's hard to pull off this concerto without getting overly sentimental or melodramatic. and it's a difficult piece. she does it with ease, yet achieves electrifying momentum. she may speak mostly French, but her blood is definitely Latina! what a temperament. she learned how to hone that temperament, making her better as she she grew older. her articulation and phrasing also improved over time. the young Martha was too impulsive, often with muddy articulation. this one transcended. most pianists play slower as they get older and compensate by adding affectation, exaggerations, or eccentricities to their playing (e.g., Claudio Arrau, Horowitz). not Martha. brava!
