"34 year old dudes with 50 year old knees." Was running this in the background heard that and laughed outloud.
Little tip for speaker screws: a dab of clear silicon glue on the end as you thread them in will make a nice gasket that will prevent any backing out of the screws. And when you want to remove them it doesn’t hold hard enough not to easily break the seal with a hand tool.
Love that you did the room mic sound. More people need to do that. Man I have been pondering about getting one of those Marshall's. Now I have to. Again another great video my friend
The Mode Four Cab is my all time favorite speaker cab. I remember hearing that the Mode Four Head was having problems...so I checked it out at a G.C. and OMG those cabs were killer!

Really appreciate this kind of series. Some people will never try these kind of cabs and some of that history is lost, so thanks for doing this. Love to see more and more cabs of your 50+ collection
I have three of these cabs with different speaker combinations. One of my favorite cabs ever.
Sound works for me. I have one of these MF280s behind me next to a Bogner and 3 of the metal grill mesas. Probably still my favorite cabinet.
Man, that Dual Rec through the MF280 is just epic. It must have been awesome in the room.
Fresh new type of content with some cab reviews! Great addition to the channel. How about doing a cab IR pack of the cab? Now we're talkin'! 👍
Great video, I have always loved Marshall cabs, so much so that I started building my own “mini 1960b” style cabs with the Marshall style window frame and screw-in front baffle. I finally finished one this past weekend that I had been working on for a few weeks. I use a 2x12 diagonal layout that makes the cab look like a small version of a Marshall 4x12. As far as the amps, the peavey and the DSL sounded the best through it. There’s definitely something to be said about Marshall’s construction and design philosophy that have shaped how we perceive what we like about guitar tones in the modern time. If Marshall had made a more rigid, airtight design like Mesa back in the 60s we wouldn’t have the same tones that we all know and love today: the biggest takeaway is the fact that a cabinet and it’s speakers shape much more of a given guitar tone than the individual amps do, and especially the pickups. I had a pair of 498 and 490 r on my Gibson and when I swapped them for Duncan sentient and Pegasus, while the output was higher and the top end was clearer, the guitar still sounded the same essentially. A speaker cab shapes your overall tone greatly, Fantastic video!
I've got mf400 and goes well with my 6505 and markV 90w heads. look forward to your future vid of this cab
There’s so much awesome gear like these cabs that need a reissue. Would be great if Marshall would do another run.
Dude this cab and that peavey xxx is so exodus tempo of the damn ... Love it

Sounds really good man. I wish Marshall kept making these cabs. They were awesome back in the day.
Shhhhh! Best sleeper cab! The 400w with G12k100s is solid too
Great video Kyle but now the secret is out this is one of my favorites cabs I’ve had it since they came out I have an old JCM900 1936 cab I like too.
Got one a couple of years ago for $145,- and still loving it, thought about changing the speakers with some old UK V30 i have, but actually become to like the stock speakers and i use it with my Peavey Triple XXX, Marshall JMP 2203 (with HMV2), DSL 100, EVH 5150III and my PRS MT15.
Great video🤘🏻😎 I got one of these cabs recently and was pleasantly surprised. Definitely a keeper!
That cab sounds great to my ear. I know in person may vary,...but it sounds like it cuts through alot of those woofy frequencies that are typically present in "most metal focused cabs". What stood out to me was the similarity between the Marshall, Peavey, and the EVH. They sounded almost identical on my end. How interesting indeed.
I’ve got the MF400A bought it new with the Mode Four 350 head to use as a half-stack configuration. I’ve loved it for almost 20 years now :)
Cab reviews. Fkn awesome idea man, love em
I watched the first 6:30 of this video and I'm always surprised that people don't mention the reason the Mode Four had 2 varieties of Cab. The 280 came in 2 flavours.... the Angled 280A and the straight 280B. The reason for that is that the MF350 head had dedicated outputs for 8 and 16-ohm cabs and was designed to work with the solid state output stage of the Mode Four head which was 350 watts. Where the MF400 cab is a 400-watt cabinet with 4 x K100 speakers rated at 100 watts each at 8 ohms, the 280 is a 16-ohm cab with 4 x MF30s rated at 70 watts each to give you a 280-watt cab. Plugging in both the 280 A&B cabinets to the MF350 Head gave you an 8 ohms load to match the MF400. It was a clever way to sell the "cheaper" head and single cab to bedroom nu-metal kids and then sell the full stack or the proper mesa killer (the MF400) to pro-level musicians. I still don't understand why the amp flopped. it had several big names using them, such as System of A Down, Alex Skolnik from Testament and Kerry King from Slayer used 3 MF400 cabs on stage. Since it was discontinued, its become a bit of an underground gem. The OD2 channel is a little scooped at full whack, but the OD1 channel is really versatile. Stick a tube screamer in front of the crunch channel and you have the JCM800 sound all day long. I changed the preamps tubes in mine and managed to get a massive fuzzy tone that I use for Doom Metal.
It's things like this video that sets your channel appart. Also why your rage video did so well. That was my first amp. My first GOOD amp. Crate GFX120 1x12 combo. Hooked that up to a Marshall 4x10 (not a typo, and I still rock can wise). The crate had no speaker mute so stuffed the amp itself in the corner with blankets. I wrote all my high school band sh#t on that amp. Had not heard that amp in 20 years? 🤔. Till you're recent video. Cheers bud! You're part of my Thursday night lineup of guitar shows. Now got to go get me those speakers
I bought one of these for 150 bucks in 2009, and it’s been my ride or die ever since! I love it

The rectifier with that 2nd boost sounds badass with the MF280!
I've lost track of how many handles I've broken on 1960 cabinets lol. It actually got me to switch from using 1960B cabs because I was tired of replacing them. The 1960B with V30s and 75s in an x-pattern used to be my favorite cab to play through, but I never looked back after getting my first Mesa trad 4x12.
it is incredible how MOST of the sound actually comes from the cab
@mikeb1378

actually the only sound that doesnt come from the cab is the noise from the cooling fans, anything through the emulated line out, and one could argue that MOST of the sound comes from the 4 loudspeakers in the cabinet. my wheels squeak a bit which is MOST of the sound when i'm rolling it around.
I've been waiting to see one of these cabs in a pawn shop for so long.

Oh man... you started with my head on the mf cab here. Makes me want one even more. Damnit. I think I have gear acquisition syndrome.
Nolly made a VERY comprehensive guide to Vintage 30s. He said something about owning over 1000 different V30s. It gets crazy. Fortunately, most iterations can be looked up with reasonable accuracy....BUT....even with all that said, speakers are going to vary from one to the next, even from hour to hour and batch to batch. We are in the far end of the weeds in the signal path...where the transducers live. It's just the nature of the beast. Fortunately, that's what EQ and mic placement is for, but it's always best to start at the source rather than correct something later. Check out that guide to see what you got. Even if you're just curious, the read itself is worth the effort of looking it up.

His favorites are form the late 90's runs. He believes it has more to do with years of production than it does different versions. I'm not sure I agree, but my amount of experience is not nearly what his is. I do have 6 mesaV30 from the years he says are the best, and also some much newer 60w mesa, and some 2010-era china. IMO the best depends on which cab/amp they are paired with. In a mesa horizontal 212 the China are the best IMO!
Awesome video. Love my mf400a cab!
Easily the best cabinet I have heard in my life. the best tone period.
Aw man a blast from the past. Way back when I used to call to my local guitar shop and play a mf head into a mf cab a few days a week, for quite a while... Guys in the shop were super nice. I loved the sound of that thing but couldn't afford it. But seeing the cab brought me right back
I have one with WGS 65’s and retro 30’s and it is my favorite cab I have now.
Like how you did this video. Explained the cab then different heads thru it.
I picked up a MF400 last year. Didn’t have original speakers though. I put a pair of 70th anniversary Celestions and a pair of Fane M65 in it. Sounds killer.
I have been able to find these cabinets over the last 2 years to put together 2 MF280A and 2 MF400B cabinets. Straight cabinets have a little more bottom end than slants and the Celestion G12-100K have more bottom than V30s. Marshall has always been a midrange sound so this resolves that issue. The slant cabs with MF V30s have alot of punch and delivers higher frequencies. These cabinets are 3" taller than 1960s giving them deeper resonance frequency. I've been using a Marshal 410H and a TSL100 with an ABY switch giving me alot of variety of tones to use. I just picked up a Mesa Dual Rectumfryer Road King II so I think the TSL will just be a backup amp. Monstrous sounds out of this rig. Highly recommend these cabinets. I've been rocking big rigs since '68 and have 17 full stacks I've collected and used over the years. My favorites are a Peavy 5150 block letter with its speakers ABY to a Peavey JSX with its speakers. Another favorite is a Rivera Bonehead ABY with a Knucklehead KR100 each on a 4-12 V30 cab with the Rivera Sub 2 subwoofers under them that have 2 JBL 12" cast frame woofers and a 500 watt power amps. You know, just for my bedroom.😂 If it's too loud, your too old. 🎸🔊🔊🔊🎵🎵🎶

I play my MF400 with an Orange Micro Terror 20w head - sounds great!! Picked it up second hand for £150 a few years back. It's the loudest piece of dining room furniture I own!
Sounds pretty good! Great review
I got one of these cabs a couple years back for £120, fantastic cabs! so glad I got it. Visually its beat to hell, but sounds so good. Looks like your speakers are dated almost exactly one year after mine. Mine must have been early ones as they have the 'marshall vintage' sticker on them but the T number does match the 'MF' speakers.
Kyle great vid as always. Like the room mic comparison. Cab sounds very mid ranged almost too much.. Love the XXX one of the best amps out there.
Some interesting info about all the different ones, didn’t know bogner and Friedman had their own variation
Awesome video, I really like looking at difference speakers and cabinets to get tone variations. Keep these videos coming, great information.
Can't mess with that badass od. Had a special grunt
Thank you very much. I'll definitely buy this cab for my 6505.
My Favorite V30 iteration is the one from the Jubilee Cabs the T3897B. It has a smoother top end than the "regular V30".
Getting one of these tomorrow to put under the MF400 because of you 😅
Awesome video! That is “one bad m-fer”. Hahahahahaha
Never played through one, very nice sound!
That First Demo with Triple X sounded better among the other but that last boosted dual recto demo sounded the best.
mf v30 has some different dust covers that have a very dark voice. Takes a bit to get use to that tone difference if you’re used to the harsh highs of the traditional sound of the v30

I’ve been looking for one of these I used love them
The MF280 is a phenomenal cabinet and unsung. I personally like the MF400 cab with the K100 Celestions as it does everything the T75 Celestions can only with more force and power on all 3 angles ( Bass/Mid/Treble) There is a problem however: it is a single 8ohm and going full stack is a problem with many amps due to impedance differences (it actually couldnt do this with the head it was designed with, the Mode Four)
Cab sounds great !
I don't have one, but I like it. I actually liked it with the Boogie. Also, according to Cestion, the v30's that are in Mesa cabs are the "original-spec" v30's. Basically the "Mesa-spec" IS the "original-spec."
The SM57 and a v30 go so well together, will all those amps, but i really like the room mic aspect since myself and a lot of others arent in a studio environment when we jam. Good stuff.

2003 speakers yummmmm
I wonder if the low end resonance you're hearing has more to do with the tweaks Celestion made to the speaker. I'd be curious what caulking all the seems with silicone would do. I have always loved the sound of sealed enclosures: it makes the low end so tight and accurate. I have some monitors with a passive radiator setup and it makes the "shape" of all low frequencies the same. It sounds good but doesn't let you hear what is actually there in the lows.
I recently (January 2024) asked Celestion about if there are any difference between Vintage 30's made in China vs. UK and Harley Benton vs. Mesa. Their answer: "No, they are all the same". So maybe there was a difference back in the days but according to Celestion themselves they're all the same.
Question for your next FAQ video. What does your head look like without a hat?
A buddy of mine had a MF full stack. It sounded like shweaty ballz. I think the reason these cabs went into obscurity for awhile is because the heads sounded terrible. It would be interesting to hear a tone nerd such as yourself dial one in though. Kerry King loves these cabs. That’s what he’s been using for years.
i like marshall's 4X15 guitar cab with four 15" celestion fullbacks in it. you should run all your guitars,,(include a 7 string), heads, pedals, and mics through them and make a reamp song that kicks ass and thrashes with a lead in it also and a small solo , it would be a dedicated video and a little lengthy , you and ola englund i like watching
KB.. sounds killer.. just don't run the Mode Four through it.. very impressed with the sound..
Not all V30MF speakers were UK made by the way. Some of the later ones were made in China.
I'd love to try one of those...have never seen one around here. BTW theres been something off with the audio on your videos lately. its kinda clipping or clicking i dunno, it happens only on your videos. and not in all of them just wanted to point that out ! it was especially noticeable in this one!
Sad that they didn’t use full thickness ply but probably were concerned with weight. Sounds good though, I’ll keep an eye out for a stack.
Yo man, did you ever get a chance to do the MF400? Would really dig a review! Cheers
I am a V30 nut….I went down the Marshall V30 rabbit hole years ago,and started researching and collecting different eras….The original speaker we know as the V30,was originally designed and exclusive to Marshall….Marshall never called it the V30…Celestion named it when they produced their non-exclusive,off the shelf version…so the Marshall variant is the original design….I currently have a quad of 1987,1993,1998,2003,2010,and 2019 Marshall Vintage’s…..then 1998,2002,and 2004 Mesa variants…..So yeah, they are my favorite speaker’s….They do all sound different to varying degrees…I find the era they were made has a bigger impact on the sound than the variation they are…..When I hear someone say,I hate V30’s,I always say, which ones?….

Oh man I remember the Rivera bonehead amp being my porn back in the day. Would love to see a video on that beast. Great info on the v30s. Blew my mind.
Hearing the room mic sound makes me curious. If you're not making a video, do you play your amps with the same/similar settings that you record with?
I think Alex Skolnick uses this cab he might use the heads too can't remember
I have been looking for one of these for a long time...they never pop up on my area.
I loved to watch this video. It was funny to me. It was funny, because I am not into metal at all (I'm more into rock and hard rock) and to me all four amps sounded exactly the same. I didn't really notice any big shifts in sound. Not even in the low end. Yet I hear you talking and it's clear to me that you experience these sounds very differently than I do. I know there's nothing wrong with my ears and I have absolutely no reason to believe that there's anything with yours, so I find this really intriguing. Could it be the 'in the room experience'? Is it the SM57? Is it psychosomatic? Am I the only one who doesn't hear clear changes in sound? Just curious. I mean, I can get a rock sound out of a Marshall, a Vox, a Fender and Mesa Boogie (for instance) and they will all have a very distinctive voice that's unique to the brand. But I don't hear anything like that at all. What do I miss here?
Any chance you could do a dummy's guide type video to vintage 30s?
do a video with mf400b
Where's the mentioned MF400 vid?! Can't find it
Seems to be a great cab! But i think that Marshall put T75 in most of their cabs to balance the uppermid bite as they’re known for. And for me, it works really well together specially when you push the mids of the amp instead of the high frequencies. V30 works really well with the Ultra and XXX, that’s for sure!
