Marshall Plexi? At BEDROOM Volume?
You bet your boots.
In this video I show you how I control the volume of these great amps, without losing the sound.
In this video I have the 50 watt Marshall 1987X, MK II. It's the reissue version, so it has a loop. If you have a Plexi without the loop, then this method won't work.

I like an EQ pedal in the loop for solo boosts, and you can use it like the volume pot to decrease the volume. You can adjust the EQ if you lose any tone from lowering the overall volume. Or like I did, get a master volume put in the amp. Actually, on my 1987x I had 2 master volumes put in. One works as a master for overall volume control (with both channels on 10) the second master is foot-switchable for a lead volume boost. Works great.

I have a Plexi Reissue that I run through a Rivera Rock Crusher attenuator and can get fully cranked tone at bedroom level pretty easily...it's beautiful actually. I do run a rack mounted reverb unit though it as well for the reverb mostly but I can fine tune the volume there if need be, it's generally left at unity on the output and input as it goes through the preamp stage on the amp and can effect tone especially when turned very low, can get thin...but great for level setting in between dB stages on an attenuator. Great to have for live sound in any sized room while keeping consistent tone. That RC is great for home studio/recording purposes too. Mic'd in the home studio (I still record to analog tape) I sometimes have to take the headphones off to make sure it's not too loud because it just sounds so damn good and full toned in there, doesn't get thin, stays creamy on the high notes, because it's essentially a fully cranked Plexi. Point being: I would not rule out a good attenuator, they can work wonders on these beasts. Nice rig (those things are tone monsters), nice work, good demo...and yes, a volume box through the back is a lot less costly than a good attenuator, so that is worthy info for those on a budget. Cheers.

Thanks! And yeah, I understand what you're saying about an attenuator. I'm planning on getting one, but I want something that will do the job once and for all, so it will have to cost a bit. We'll see what I decide on getting.

  • @bbbro34

Rivera Rock Crusher, and I'm not a salesperson, just a user, is a reactive attenuator, not resistive, and it does a fantastic job on holding tone...just buy it used, I did, and got it for $300 US dollars, lists for $550 new. When I asked the people via email at Rivera if it could handle a 100 watt Plexi dimed, they were quick to respond and said that is it exactly the amp they had in mind when they made it and to dime away. Here's the other plus side to it, it's great live and will allow you to hold consistent tone and give a good volume control for any size venue, small or large, pub, whatever...the sound guys will love you for it. No more evil stare downs when you roll in your Plexi stack. Great video and good info.

I have the YJM100 Marshall amp with the built-in attentuator. Looks amazing to have up here but can't really get much use out of it as it has to be set aggressively, so I'm back to my solid state Marshall till I can isolate it. I was thinking of wiring it up in the garage fully soundproofed and then using a wireless system to play back through my guitar/speakers that I keep in my bedroom. Or maybe I need a Rivera Rock Crusher, ha. Would that be better than the YJM attenuator?

Fender amps are famous for going from can't hear anything to the windows and doors rattling. The way I tamed my 65 twin reverb was to change the volume pot on the amp with a volume pot with a better linear taper.. finally, I used a overdrive pedal as a clean boost and tone filter and that was the silver bullet. I could use it on 1 and still get an excellent practice tone. Another trick is to remove a power tube. I personally don't like that as it makes the tone sound weak.

I Own Bugera tube G20 watt amp with 2 - 80 watt Bugera TS cabinets and my amp is at full functionality at low volume , my low volume is set at tv volume setting when I’m channeling it. So I set my tv volume for whatever then see if tv volume drowns out or equal to my amp and if it does then off the tv then jam. Then when I up the amp volume then my tv sound bar fills the gap 🤘🎸🤘 Btw ... I’m still interested in purchasing a Marshall rig setup and just leave my tv sound bar just loud 🤘

That' s an apples to oranges comparison. It's not that one is " better" than the other, they are just very distinctively different, and offer a very different set of features as well. There is a tone difference but also a difference in available gain, which pedals work well with them, etc. That said if you are looking for a " clean" amp and get your o.d/ distortion from pedals, ya want the fender. If ya want more drive, can live without internal reverb, or are more of a guitar straight to the amp type fella that needs the amp to go from clean to dirty without pedals, ya want the marshall. The origin is pedal friendly, dont get me wrong, but it is classic marshall, no more no less. The fender is a 6l6 driven clean amp with a lil breakup if cranked with a nice reverb and not much else, but is a lil more pedal friendly. The beauty of both is their simplicity but other than that, they have very little in common.

Depending on your speakers, using an attenuator or effects loop master volume or post phase inverter master volume might lose you some "tone" due to a lack of speaker breakup caused by higher volumes. Some speakers are "stiffer" than others, maintaining their signal integrity at higher volumes. Others (like G12M25's and G12H30's, for instance, among many others) will break up and distort at higher volumes. If you've built your tone around a set of speakers that have an attractive-sounding breakup, you will lose that characteristic from your sound at lower volumes, even with the same amount of amp distortion. I learned about this first-hand when I got a good rocking tone out of a 1959 Reissue without an effects loop. In order to quiet it down, I got a Weber attenuator with a coneless speaker motor in it to reduce the volume going to the cab. Unfortunately, part of that great tone was the speakers breaking up under the hideously, horrifyingly loud volume of the 100-watt Plexi. That same attenuator worked *_great_* on a Laney AOR 100 rig, though. The Laney cab's speakers broke up at much higher volume than the cab I used with the Marshall, so the attenuator didn't ruin the tone. You learn these things as you go, sometimes. Heed my warning about this, though, and you might save yourself some money if you investigate how loud speakers can get before they break up. That way you can plan for an attenuator, if your amp doesn't have an effects loop or if you don't want to use it as a master volume, or if you're going to install a post phase inverter master volume. One last thing: If you want to get an attenuator to use on a non-master volume Marshall (or a clone of one), get one that's rated at at least half again the nominal rating of the amp. So, get a 75-watt (or higher) attenuator for a Model 1986 or 1987 50-watt Plexi and a 150-watt (or higher) attenuator for a Model 1959 Plexi. The reason is that, when these amps were first designed, built and marketed, the watts rating of the amp was *_at the point of a certain percentage of harmonic distortion of the system._* Think about that for a moment. A 100-watt Plexi is putting out about 100 watts of power _at the last point on the sweep of the volume knob that amp is still producing clean tones._ Where is that on _your_ amp? 4? 5? Everything after that is distorted and more watts. Average, everyday, run-of-the-mill Plexis can generate 135 watts at max volume. 145 to 150 is perfectly common. It is not unusual for them to produce 170 watts at full chat. If you try to use a 100-watt attenuator on a "100-watt" Plexi, you might just burn up your attenuator.

@@christocaster SV20 creates some of it's distortion from the power tubes if the preamp tube signal is large enough to drive the power tube into saturation. Since you are attenuating the preamp signal it doesn't have enough umph to push the power tube into saturation thus less gain coming out of the amp. In another words, most of your gain sounds come from the preamp tubes instead of the power tubes like a 100w plexi would produce. With sv20 you're better off with an attenuator between the power tube and the speaker that will reduce the volume of both pre and power tube distortions.

My understanding is this.... The way you are doing this in the loop is actually placing a master volume before the phase inverter tube. I think this is where they placed the master volume circuit in the JCM800s, but I don't know or sure. There is another mod that places it after the phase inverter tube known as a PPIMV which stands for post phase inverter master volume.... LaMar Master Volume is a popular mod for plexis. That tube is absolutley responsible for a lot of the plexi tone so you're missing a gain stage if you stick it in the loop. I have a plexi with a PPIMV and have A/B both ways and there is a definite difference in the tone doing this in the loop where there is barely any with the PPIMV. I can take my plexi on nuclear and tame it quite easily. All that being said this is a great solution and you can do it for $20 if you don't already have an extra volume pedal lying around. If you've got a plexi check into a PPIMV. It's gonna run ya about $100 which is still cheaper than an attenuator, but if you've got a plexi type amp you've already got some $ invested. Great video, Great playing I sunscribed

If you would ever make a video with the Waza Craft Expander set up as a normal attenuator between the head and the cab - set with the optimal choice of power tube match out of the 16 possible choices the device has, and compare that sound with the sound you get with your solution in this video, that would be a video I'd be very interested in watching! If your solution would be nearby soundwise, that easy way of solving the attenuator problem (where the attenuator used seldom is the right match for the power tube valves) would be highly desirable. :-)

The added resistance helps there I think. But I don’t have any problems with that with a scalloped fretboard, it’s just super easy on a flat one. Scalloped was the way to go for me, I’ve never looked back since, although a flat fretboard does not bother me that much. Just makes bends and vibrato not as fluid or good.

@@MrPolevaulter Brilliant playing and a great video! I've been using a volume pot in the loop of my 60 watt Hot Rod Deville 410 (I know, heresy) for many years and it really is a great solution ... if you can live with only pre-amp tube saturation. But i recently built a fantastic attenuator for about 50 euros -- really easy to do in a few hours even by a novice. It absolutely DOES NOT mess with the tone down to around -28db: on a 50W Plexi that should drop the amp from somewhere around 118db dimed to about 90db which is still way above bedroom level, but playing with the volumes and perhaps putting an always-on pedal in front with low level (or even the volume pot in the loop as well) you can definitely get into bedroom territory. Correct me if I am wrong, but the fx loop master volume is completely different from the actual sound. The classic plexi tone is based on BOTH preamp and power amp distortion. Using a volume knob in the fx loop (which I believe is pre phase inverter, the part that actually distorts), will only cut the signal more and more and doesn’t drive the phase inverter at all. This means that this sound is mostly if not only preamp distortion, which is NOT how a plexi sounds, which is why you need an attenuator in between power amp and speaker (which is definitely AFTER the phase inverter) so we can hear phase inverter/power amp distortion which is a big part of the sound of plexi users (ACDC’s Angus and Malcolm Young, Yngwie Malnsteen, Pete Townshend, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page... etc)

Your dB-app isn't far off actually. When counting and adjusting dB you need to understand the logarithm. I seem to remember you've mentioned that math wasn't your strong suit 🤔, so I'll break it down. Deci means ten. This means every bel higher basically raises the effect by ten each step. So there is a greater difference from 79 to 78 than from 78 to 77. This means that each whole step between 80 and 90 are basically ten times higher than the ones from 70 to 80. Obviously an app can never measure perfectly but seeing how I have my own dB-machine at work and I use my amp as a point of reference when teaching about sound in physics I can conclude that your app is sufficient enough 👍. I live in my own house so I have my big amp in my living room. And my kids sleep on the top floor so I can play quite high even after bedtime. But I must say that the fact that I can adjust the wattage in the output (from 60w all the way down to 1w) goes a long way. It doesn't keep the sound all the way, but definitely close enough. Great feature actually. But very interesting video. The health of our ears is something many of us don't think about. Catch that? 😂😉. I might use this video as part of my teaching actually. Could work as an introduction both to counting dB but also added knowledge before I go practical. Hope that's ok in that case.

Most likely you were using a load box that was a resistive load as they are the least expensive and definitely the most common. You need to use a load box that has a reactive load- those don't kill your tone.

Sorry, not sure I understand? Sounds like you didn't watch the video. I might just have misunderstood. I was using a passive volume pot in the loop, not a load box. One of those would be after the amp.

I think livingabovethe12th was referring to your use of an attenuator many years ago, and that you hated it. I/We would like to see you try a newer modern attenuator that is "reactive". Older attenuators used a resistave coil encased in cement, and while they work well they do suck some of the tone out of the signal/sound. Try a Rivera Rock Crusher Recording with the active EQ, it is an active attenuator that seems to be a good trade off between price, features and performance. For my older 1987x (no effects loop) I am running a 2x12" cabinet with a pair of custom voiced/reconed Vintage 30s, it is VERY Loud. Looking to upgrade my Dr. Z Air-Brake attenuator soon with the Rivera model. Funny what you said about the volume knob not working, so true. Volume settings at anything under "4" sounds thin, I play mine daily at about 3/4 full volume (using the attenuator of course). Interesting, my other amp is an old Fender Twin Reverb, at 100 Watts it is almost as loud as the 50 Watt Marshall 1987x!

  • @stiffrichard2816

The newer 1987X heads sound nasty and noisy and the fx loop is weird. You shouldn't have to service a new head but better tubes some tweaks and putting the treble cap across both channels like the early Marshalls makes it much more usable for cleaner settings then you can use a boost or an OD. Or use a power brake.

If I play a 1 watt through a 4x12 it’s not going to be bedroom volume. Get a 1\4 watt amp

  • @rowdyjohnson6026

    @rowdyjohnson6026

    4 жыл бұрын

The 4×12 is the culprit in this scenario. Ya dont need less watts ( this will also sacrifice clean headroom) , ya need less speaker. When using 1 watt, a single 12 is more than enough speaker. Then again, most do not only play in the bedroom so attenuators and fx loop type "volume boxes" still come in handy regardless. One amp, large cab, small cab, and attenuator/ volume box allows one to go from bedroom to small club to theatre efficiently. And getting a single 1×12 cab and volume box is cheaper than several amps with several wattage ratings etc., and allows you to take your favorite amp/ tone to any setting, large or small.

i have 87x plexi on about 1 or maybe 2 and a ,,..pure air pedal,...... on maybe 1 or two, in the livingroom, and am careful....an it works, but the cats have slunk back towards the bedroom,it can be done,an this plexi was played all over the world an traded for a rare firebird,an has a weird mod in back, goes up an down a little on bass an treble, not a master volume, but no clue, its the richest most attractive plexi i ever heard..an im still afraid of it a little here in the living room, what a beautiful tone,so huge,an makes me fel like im better player than i am,i wish i knew who the guy was who my friend traded the firebird for this..gimme a normal strat an a marshall or good engl,an classic blues/ rock, no metal,no shred i hate that musick so bad, gimme zz top, skynyrd, deep purple,....spirit,an nazareth,an queen etc..................
