Marshall Studio Vintage vs 1987: Which One Should You Get?

Музыка

Owning a plexi style Marshall amp is an absolute joy, but these days you can go smaller with a Studio Vintage than you could back in the day. But how does it stack up to its next brother in line, the 1987x? Since I own both, I wanted to find out how they compare and document it for you, might you be wondering which one to get.

I have been contemplating the SV20H and the 1987X. The latter being more expensive but with a much more robust build and with better parts. Anyway, in the end I got myself the JTM45 2245 - it definitely sounds bigger and bolder than the 20 and 50 watt Plexis. I paired it with a Marshall 1936 cabinet with two Celestion Alnico Golds. It sounds like Heaven!

I remember seeing reviews of SV20 and it sounded fantastic. But man, that 1987x in this particular setup just sounded amazing and in another league. I hear attenuator is a must as its volume goes from 9 to 10, skipping 1 to 8 all together.

On its own, the SV20H can sound great. But I have to admit, after I did this comparison, I sold the SV because it ruined it for a while. Eventually I bought it back, because it simply sounds good on its own and it's more practicle for some situations. With both an attenuator is a must, but it of course applies more to the 1987x. Even with good hearing protection it's wild how loud that amp is, and I even run the channel volumes pretty low.

I have a Hendrix inspired strat that I've played for more than ten years through Fender amps, but once I got into Marshalls I shifted to Gibsons and now my strat has been in a case in my upstairs office, so I never really tried the Hendrix thing with the SV20H. But I would suggest pluggin into the normal channel and patching to the treble channel and keel the volume of the normal channel higher than the treble channel. I think the normal on 4 or 5 and the treble channel on 2. Set the EQ to your ears and feel, but most of it is in those channel volumes. The SV20H is biased really cold, so I think this way works best with it, especially with a strat.

Everything else, including the all-important bright cap is the same. Weird, as my experience with the 87x is that it is has more mid-frequency emphasis and does not have as shrill a treble as the SV. @@StevenAnthonyGuitar now I have to decide between a band wired 1987 and 1959 - I figure they’re both loud as Shit and need attenuation so it’s a matter of tone

@@DistrictSoundLab yeah I think there's only a 3dB difference in those 50 watts. You'd even need an attenuator for the Studio Vintage at the 5w setting. The 1987x is more aggresive and punchier, the 1959 has more headroom. Kind of like Duane Allman (50w and more raunchy) and Dickey Betts (100w, cleaner and fuller).

The 1987 sounds brighter with more bite everytime. Sv20 cleaner n darker.

The SV20 is cleaner for sure, but doesn't sound darker to my ears. It is brighter, but with the lacking bottom end of the 1987, making it sound a bit more shrill. In comparison I think the 1987 simply bites in a better way. But ofcourse we could ofcourse either peeceive or simply describe it differently 🙂

Wondered y the 1987 sounded so bad - i own one - then realized it was just another copy of a copy, lol. Crazy when every piece of REAL VINTAGE gear has a modern copy … that doesn’t sound a tenth as good. Why is that? You’d think same electronics equals same sound - but i guess even vintage components were better sounding in some way - crazy!

@@MrBurst62 you must be hearing something different than me. At the same settings, the SV20 is a lot thinner. Ofcourse I was also in the room playing both when I recorded it, giving me a clear recollection of the sound. The only way I can get the SV20 to sound nearly as full as the 1987, is to plug into the normal channel instead of the high treble one. But if your ears hear something different that's fine, as long as your happy with your SV20. I know I am 😉👍

either way it's a weird comparison. You have a 50 watt head and a 20 watt head so of course the 50 has way more headroom so it should be bigger sounding. If your recording you can eq all of that in or out. If your playing live you add headroom to the SV20 with a Freyette Power Station or eq it at the board.

On its own and in the room, absolutely. I prefer it for live shows for that reason, though I can happily gig with the SV20 as well. For recording the SV20 might work better when I use my Zilla 2x12" I normally pair it with, because it easily fits in the mix. But there is something special about playing the 1987x through the 4x12" in the room.
