This is the new 2019 Marshall JCM800 Studio Classic 20 (SC-20H) amplifier head. This is a really solid valve amplifier perfect for studio and live use application. The amplifier can be run at full 20 watts or switched down to 5 watts for lower volume use. Even at lower volumes, this amplifier is quite loud. In this video review of the Marshall JCM800 Studio Classic, I am using the Marshall MX212 speaker cabinet loaded with 2 x Celestion Seventy 80 speakers.

    I LOVE this amp. After years of using the likes of Mesa Boogie and a PRS MT15, it was a little brighter than what I was used to, but after a bit of tweaking, it's an AMAZING amp. It was only after I owned a Marshall when I realised those amps don't have that much gain and you kinda have to be a better player to use them well. Boost it with a decent overdrive and it absolutely sings! One thing to bear in mind is that Floyd Rose guitars can sound quite shrill through this amp, even with the presence and treble dialled way back, and noticed a decrease in distortion compared to another guitar with a stoptail bridge and a similar pickup. So I would advise maybe putting a brass block in the Floyd and choosing your pickup wisely in order for it to not sound that way. An Alnico Nailbomb by Bare Knuckle Pickup works really well in this case. Boosts the input as well as the midrange for more gain without sounding harsh.

    Hey man that jcm800 sounds great, but I don't really like the speakers that comes in that mx212 cabinet even though I have the SAME cabinet I changed out the 7080 speakers for old old G12M35 speakers THAT just scream with my Marshalls and actually got GREAT results putting the 2 Celestion 7080 speakers into a fender Frontman 212R and now THAT amp sounds like a fender twin on the clean, vox ac30 on the mid drive and full Marshall distortion on the more drive channel out just screams now so I'm happy, glad you dig the new Gibson Marshall sounds😉

  • @auntjenifer7774

    @auntjenifer7774

    I have to share some results I got playing around with speakers and trying for different tones and I realized the only tone I can get with THOSE 7080 speakers is the slash afd tone which is a great tone so I kept a 7080 speaker on 16 ohm so could get that tone but the best Rock and blues tones I got were with higher end and old Celestion speaks or Eminence GB1258 speakers are GREAT and very affordable and pretty high power 50-75 Watts depending on which flavour of the GB Eminence you choose but I got one 12 sent to me door for under $50.00 by shopping around for the best deal + free shipping ! I know you are a tinker of sorts when it comes to your gear and STAGE set up so that's why I share my results, wish I had recordings of the Marshalls so you could hear the doggone difference between the raspy sizzle of the 7080 to the smoother more natural green back tones but to end THIS I must say the 7080 is a high power handler with its 80 watt stamp of approval no doubt has its purposes in high wattage cabinets but sound best in a 412 cab mixed with fuller darker speakers like GB or v30 but I don't like the tone alone on the 7080 , NEVER have, and yes this was before internet dissection of speakers and tubes😄🤣😆😉

    For anyone wondering this is a great “live/gigging” amp. It’s very bright as you can tell from this video but, having said that it works great in a live setting. Because you’re not fighting the bass players frequency and you’re cutting through the mix. It’s also extremely touch sensitive. I run a AC booster and or a morning glory in the front and ride my volume on my baja tele and I can get anywhere from heavy overdriven rhythm to sparkly/spanking country twang. It’s definitely an amp that you need to dial in but totally worth the time. Also to note I run the head into a 2x12 vertical cab with two celestion 70/80 speakers.

    @@spada60 you are right. But ever since I got an all tube amp. I use an overdrive or a distortion pedal more like a volume boost for my main tone. Kinda like Stevie Ray Vaughan did with his tube screamer. I do use an overdrive for more gain and what not, and doing a clean boost is just what I am liking right now. That's why I like love playing guitar so much. There is a millions ways to get a tone and everyone has there own way

    Hi Shane watching your videos for a while and like them ,I recently bought a Marshall SC20 head and a Peavey 2x12 cabinet ,just a little confused as to how to connect it up. the cab has a stereo /Mono switch on the back which reads 8 ohm in stereo,or 16 ohm in mono what connection do i use on the amp? the speakers are Green backs at 8 ohms each .you tested the amp ,and i loved it ,could you help a beginner guitarist out ,the shop told me connect to the 8 ohm out let ,i have switched it to MONO ,so which one do i connect to 16 ohm or 8 the manual is not much help ,keep up the good work ,thanks .

    I’m pretty sure if you have the switch in mono use the 8 ohm output. The cab might be able to have two amps in stereo possibly. If you only hear one speaker in mono let me know but they should both work.

    Sounded great! I think I would still pick the dsl20hr over it, just more versatility :). All depends what you’re looking for.

    This video really demonstrated how a darn good musician can compensate for bad guitar pickups. In my humble opinion, there is no reason to keep ceramic pickups in the Mexico Standard Strat. I have one too, and after some years put Seymour Duncan SSL-1 into it. Never looked back. :) The highs are just so uncomfortable to me in Ceramic Standard ones...

    Celestion 70/80s are bright speakers. You might have a different comment about amp’s brightness if cab was loaded w say Celestion G12H Anniversary speakers

    I just want to see what people think and take sort of a poll. From what you have heard(or tried) of these two amps, what would you rather have for Punk Rock/Hard Rock in Studio, The JCM 800 Studio (or) the Silver Jubilee Studio??

    It’s worth it cause you have thought about it. I have own this amp and be it in the low or high output it rocks forever. Well of course this is boosted with pedals. Just simple pedals like a delay or reverb and any overdrive. Then you’re all set.

    Too me some guitar player's for a lack of better words look awkward or uncomfortable playing the Flyin V guitar. Intheblues guy and his Flying V seems like a natural fit. Diggin the guitar more than the amp head.

    Get rid of those 70/80 Celestions and I'll bet that amp would sound a LOT better/less harsh in the high end. Play it through some V30s or Greenbacks. But overall the 70/80 are a pretty crappy speaker. Most DSL40 owners I know, swap that speaker out right away for a V30 or a Greenback and are blown away at the difference in improvement.

    I wish this was 50 watts or at least 40... you think you can gig and jam with a band with it? Everyone says it's a very very loud amp, I know it will work with my R&B band but I'm also in a hard rock/metal band. This is almost making me reconsider getting a Rockerverb 50.

    I have both heads (50 watt Rockerverb and the SC20H). I've used both with the band I'm in. Two guitars. The SC20H keeps up fine and our drummer who hits hard, thick ass bass guitars, etc. The best is you can drive the power amp some. I run the master on 4 and preamp on 7.5. I use them with a marshall 1960TV at rehearsal.
