Marshall 2210 in for repair. Tune up, maintenance + resonance control added

Музыка

A client brought a Marshall split channel JCM 800 model 2210 to me with a blown HT fuse. It appears the fuse could have blown from red-plating tubes, capacitor failure or both.
In either case, I don't power on amplifiers with known faults. I rewire some bad wiring and replace all electrolytic components and tubes before powering on. Added a plate bypass cap to tame high end oscillation at max gain settings and replaced the DI Output knob with a resonance control. This adds versatility to the amp while retaining all the amps original features and tone and no holes are drilled into the amplifier's chassis and no permanent modifications are made to the circuit board.
Sound clips at the end are recorded with an Audix i5 on a 4x12 with Vintage 30 speakers. At low volumes the resonance control sounds maxed out when about halfway up. More noticeable effect when cranking the master volume.

You know, I work similar to you. If I'm working on a guitar, if I see something wrong I will take care of it. Why would anyone give you a hard time for doing the right, and correct thing just is astonishing!!

I got my buddy's JCM 800 2210 today. He said he hasn't used it in 10 years because it had a loud hum. I took it apart and it's actually pretty clean inside. The only mod I saw was some dingus took R51 and ran it from RV1 to C35. I'm putting in the new caps because like you said the originals are gone and I'm really considering doing that resonance mod you did; it sounded great man. Wish me luck, you really helped me understand a few things I needed to figure out.

Glad this helped. I've seen the insides of quite a few of these and the heater wiring layout is done poorly on these models. On a higher gain amp like this it can definitely lead to loud hum. I would start with the caps for sure. I have a spare set of tubes I swap out to rule out problems there. I've seen excess hum from bad power tubes before. If the hum persists, reinstall the original tubes and keep troubleshooting. I am going to install a hum balance control on the next 2210 I work on to see if that helps out. Rewiring the heaters takes a lot of extra time but it is worth it if it's yours. A lot of clients don't want to pay for that time. I have two waiting in line to be worked on now. Good luck.

It's great to see the 2210 getting some love. I've owned mine since about 96-97. Like any tube amp, the harder you push it, the better it sounds and this thing of mine is ungodly loud and sounds awesome. I used to get a lot of dirty looks on stage from the other guys because I had to crank it to get the right sound and it would drowned them out. In the JCM-800 line the 2203 and 2204 get the lions share of the attention (arguably, deservedly so) and I hope to grab one some day but my 2210 has never let me down.

It seemed that at the halfway point the resonance control added a lot of clarity to the midrange for some reason. I didn't expect that at all. Maybe it moves the upper bass frequencies down a bit? It sounded a lot better that way. With it all the up, it just seemed to boost everything from how it sounded all the down, but still better than stock. I have an '89 2210 and it's a very touchy amp as far as setting up the EQ goes. The amp easily becomes congested sounding if you're not careful and I usually have the tone controls set pretty low, like all under 5. The resonance control modification seems to loosen up the congestion.

I wish one day I'm rich enough to be able to afford a JCM800 (2205 or 2210) or a Silver Jubilee. In the meantime I'll keep rocking my Valvestate 8100 and the Jet City Custom 22 I got last month.

I have a Marshall JCM800 2210 head and it was bought used, the reverb unit was taken out. I'm trying to rewire it, but I don't want to F it up. There are wires inside the chassis that are not hooked up, I have tried to read the Schematics and can't figure it out. I might have to take it a shop to get it fixed, I was hoping that I could fix it myself. Doesn't look like it though 🤔 Great Video 👍

A resonance or depth control can be added to any tube amp circuit. It’s only a matter of adding a 1M potentiometer and capacitor of your choice in between an NFB wire that’s going to a tap on the OT secondaries. Not all amp circuits utilize NFB in the same way but they can all be easily modified. I can’t speak to the specifics of that amp as I haven’t seen it but I would imagine you could find the schematic of a 5150 and implement the added control in the same manner they do.

The resonance control sounds good to my ear. I know I like to add it using my jvm. I just got a mint 2210 and like it, but I hear the difference between the jvm and it now. I'm tempted to do the mod but I may just leave it as it is. Recommend?

I had an early 2205 back around 1985. Later, I learned that Marshall modified the circuit of 2205 and 2210 to correct some kind of problem that was identified, and that these later ones, up through 1989, were better amps. Does anyone know about this and exactly when was this modification introduced?

  • @purgasound

I'm not sure it's a simple yes or no answer here. The question could be reversed to "Do I like tube distortion?" and the answer can be yes, but there are a lot of terrible sounding tube amp circuits. When applied in a great sounding circuit, diode clipping distortion can sound very good. It's all about the design of the circuit.
