Mars, Romulus, & The Founding of Rome (Roman Mythology Explained)

While many of the myths of Roman gods are of Greek origin, the tales surrounding Romulus, Mars and the founding of Rome give us important insights into an original Roman mythology.
- Once when I refer to Varro, I actually meant Livy. Livy's History confirms the apotheosis of Romulus, and even his appearance to Iulius Proculus, but does not refer to him as Quirinus. Varro also does not call Romulus Quirinus, but his complete history does not survive intact.

I once had a dream about Slavic God of war Sviatovid, he was rampaging thoroug the forest on a wheat cart pulled by two oxen, at his feet were sacks of grain, gold and weapons,at least some fruits and one barrel, spare axle and wheel he was naked, muscular, luminescent, he was holding in his hand flail, had four faces (the defining trait) and pilgrim hat, his frontal face looked insanely happy. - Now knowing that Mars was also god of crops this glorious experience makes more sense.

Svan + vit means swan + white in Low German. I know the Svanto/Sviato word means sacred in Slavic but originally probably light/white/bright. The swan being linked to the cult of Mars was interesting to me. The word Mars means pure/reknown/light in Germanic an Celtic. Germanic people called the Mars by several names such as Mars/Mers (same as Romans), Er/Ir/Ar (same as Greek Ares, also simply means "he"), Arminius (means huge/universal) or locally Ziu/Tiu (among Alamannians and Anglo-Saxon, derived from older word for the Sky God) or Saxnot ("sword of need" , his Saxon name). According to the Saxon Chronicle, the Mars Arminius was depicted as a man walking through a field of flowers. High places of that God would have been Merseburg and Eresburg (Obermarsberg).

The thing with the babies in the basket on the river is so similar to the story of Moses (who btw did most of his life's work in company with his brother Aaron) makes me wonder how "indoeuropean" the near east was in ancient times. This is not the first such parallel I stumble upon in my research. The band of youngsters/social outcasts also reminds me of the fable of the prodigal son.

I don't believe in coincidence, the Romans put things together for a reason. The Roman Pantheon still stands today , in tact ! Roman mythology is an infusion of Rome , Greek, Egyptian, Norse , Celtic ect. All have a most high deity, all mythologyies are prototypes of Christ . Deity of God- creator , Christ - son , Holy Spirit - enabler of action . When Constantine converted Rome to Christianity, Christ was elevated to King over divine , mythological gods , goddesses , all of creation . Christ was the creator becoming the creation , the 2nd Adam . The final blood sacrifice . Just my opinion , however I think 1 of the reasons Rome fell is because most Romans continued to worship divine rather than CHRIST. Christianity is the only religion that all mythologyies, all prehistoric religions & beliefs point to Christ . Most people can't see the coralation of mythology to Christianity.

If put into right framework, Christianity is just full of pre-Christian European ideas that were hard to wipe out and are completely non-biblical. Be it a trinity, eating pork or whatever that makes Christianity different from Muslims and Jews. Btw, according to the bible itself Jesus was created lower than an angel. Angels and archangels = pagan Gods,; like the seven angels the days of the week are named after. Ever wondered why all three abrahamic religions acknowledge the existence of angels but the worship of these entities whose job would be that of messengers between human and divine realm is for some curious reason restricted to paganism. @@dearlrogers3498

The Latin etymological Dictionary explains : Archaically called Mavors, Mars is an old Italic deity, he presided over the occupations of the fields as well as the works of the earth. Hence his nicknames of Rusticus; the Arvales brothers, who, as their name indicates, were attendants of a country cult, invoke Mars in their litanies; Cato orders sacrifices to be offered to him so that he watches over the conservation of the oxen. When Greek mythology was introduced to Rome, Ares was identified with Mars, which made him an exclusively warrior god. The Oscan name of Mars was 𐌌𐌀𐌌𐌄𐌓𐌔 (mamers), it is likely that Mavors, Mamers and the Etruscan Maris are variants of the same word. According to Lewis & Short[1], the radical of the word is *mar- ("to shine"), the meaning would then be "God of light".

Indo European is everywhere! "My mother was a high priestess, my father I knew not. The brothers of my father loved the hills. My city is Azupiranu, which is situated on the banks of the Euphrates. My high priestess mother conceived me, in secret she bore me. She set me in a basket of rushes, with bitumen she sealed my lid. She cast me into the river which rose over me. The river bore me up and carried me to Akki, the drawer of water. Akki, the drawer of water, took me as his son and reared me. Akki, the drawer of water, appointed me as his gardener. While I was a gardener, Ishtar granted me her love, and for four and ... years I exercised kingship. Similarities between the Sargon Birth Legend and other infant birth exposures in ancient literature, including Moses, Karna, and Oedipus, were noted by psychoanalyst Otto Rank in his 1909 book The Myth of the Birth of the Hero.[69] The legend was also studied in detail by Brian Lewis, and compared with many different examples of the infant birth exposure motif found in European and Asian folktales. He discusses a possible archetype form, giving particular attention to the Sargon legend and the account of the birth of Moses.[7] "

These possible hints into the oldest layer of Roman mythology might have additional Indo-Iranic parallels: There is a figure in the Shamameh called Qaren, around the time of Fereydun (thritaona) who could be similar to Quirinus. The equivalence of Remus with Iamus (Yama/Yim/Gemos) 'twin' suggests that there should be a Manu in the story. This isn't always the case, and the obvious man to the twin is Romulus. But how about Numa? It isn't unheard of for words to undergo transpositions of syllables in Italic.

Nuada is Varuna, but the Varuna archetype is not a peaceful god. He is agressive, expands the dominion of the gods, and it is Mithra who ends up placating the wrath of Varuna. In Ireland this combative personality has been transferred to Lugh, but the rest of Varuna's traits are found in Nuada. Here, in Roman Mythology, it is Romulus who takes the Varuna/Nuada role, as the first king of the gods and a stern ruler, whose kingship seems tyrannical, but that's not the reality. In Greece you find the same Varuna archetype with Agamemnon of Mycenae, and Mithra is found in Menelaus of Sparta.

Wanna add that Germanic people had two types of kings/chiefs, one for war, one for peace. The word for the warchief was *haritugas, whence we get the German and Dutch noble title Hertog/Herzog (duke). Latin dux and English duke are also cognates of that word, from the root of Latin ducere, German ziehen, meaning to pull (pull through the land with your army). The "peace chief" is the literal king or "kuningas", the "Ing" (progeny) of a "Kunni" (family = kin). To marry into other tribes royal families and strengthen bonds between people.

exceptional take on archaic acceptance, seemingly from the "evil" romulus, being the pro and con mythical universe. my knowledge is not as high, but the scope that humanity and the universe are mutually battling for what is "air," gives a great scope that as humanity competes to undertake all beknownst, that it will be our demise, as remus or we lost, and it's all okay because in the end romulus will just cease.

Could Mars be derived from Marduke Amar utu? Amar=immortal ... The Lus in Lustration etymology is same as Luce in Lucifer. Lugh seems to mean bind by oath. (Like secret oaths) as done in darkness? Lugh carried a magical spear. What if its not the fire but the light surrounded by darkness? A Quirinus flamen was a flame Light bearer. Romulus leads his soldiers by a spear with twigs bound to it tip. Perhaps an early version of the Fasci? Romulus carries a oak tree dressed in armor. Lupus for wolf etymology is supposed to mean Devour or consume so the (Lu) in Luce could mean same thing as fire consumes. The (Pus) in latin means rot or decay as a cadaver so Lu pus the is code for (the augary LU (from vultures) of the cadaver PUS) could the eagle actually be the vulture in nobility? Could the milk of a fig be called puss? Perhaps context is key? As for the Shoe (Jewish tradition say throwing a shoe was a way of decline a contract like marriage) so a shoe is connected to contract and covenant.

Considering Romulus and Remus' story as clearly Indo-European in structure, what about the story of Sargon the Great, who was also cast into a river when young and became a warlord, are Akkadians also Indo-Europeans? I thought they were Semitic. What about the story of Moses, are the Hebrews also Indo-Europeans? I wonder if picking different related myths from people speaking Indo-European languages does say anything about original Indo-European myths, or perhaps it's the only thing we have at hand and we just don't want to see the reality that Indo-European mythology is too far back in time to be attainable. Frazer in the Golden Bough went deeper in analysing these myths with a very broad picture and it helped him to bring out conclusions on humanity's evolution, he didn't reduce his study to chasing the Indo-Europeans.

A similar myth in Abrahamic faith involves Moses to be put into a basket and casted into a river, where he was rescued by the pharao's daughter, and went on to become a warrior and great general.

@@dracodistortion9447 Jesus is an Anglicization of the Greek _Iesous_ from the Hebrew Yeshua(Joshua) which has nothing to do with _"Dyauspitar"_ or _"Deus Pater(Jupiter)"_ in ancient Latin or Old Indic. The Hebrews referred to God as _Elohim_ and _Yahweh(Jehovah)_ which were just titles or epithets for God. Technically the Hebrew word _Adon_ is what God would truly be called in Hebrew.

@@dracodistortion9447 Jesus does seem similar to "Zeus" but that is mostly accidental. Jesus mean "salvation" a common Jewish name while Zeus most likely mean, "sky, shining".
