Marriage Visa for Thailand and How to Get One in 2022

In this video I wanted to talk about the Marriage visa (extension of stay based on marriage) for Thailand. The marriage visa is a great option for foreign nationals to stay in Thailand long term if they are married to a Thai citizen.
The marriage visa has a lot of benefits, but also requirements and I wanted to discus both here in this video.
Although I don't work with visas in any professional manner, or have any formal education on the subject, I have lived in Thailand for around 4 years and been on a variety of visas. So what I know is based on my experience living out here and the experience of those I have met who have shared theirs with me.
In this video we will look at:
- An overview of what the marriage visa is.
- The benefits and requirements of the marriage visa.
- The process of getting a marriage visa for Thailand.

I have been on the UK thai consulate web page today and you can apply for a marriage visa online. Obviously if you are in thailand then yes do as you say . If like me your Thai spouse lives with you in your country of residence then no point in applying for a 90 days and then applying again in Thailand when you can apply once in your country of residence.

Thanks for the upload I'm in the USA and my type o visa might no be ready before the May 3rd flight to Thai because the embassy is closed and its all done online if one things not right I had to reapply. Nice to know I can still go and if I don't get the visa I can still get it just outside of thai do you know where would be the best place? Also I applied for a double entry type o not a single you think that's ok?

Last time I had to do it I went to Laos, but may be best to go to Malaysia depending on where you are based in Thailand. Multi entry visa is a good idea :)

Context: Me and my Thai girlfriend have been in a relationship for over 10 years now, long distance. We want to get married in Thailand and have me (M) live in Thailand with a marriage visa. Can I come into the country with a Tourist Visa (not STV, the regular Tourist Visa), and then marry her and then change it into a marriage visa? Or do I first have to apply for a non-immigrant O marriage visa, marry her and then extend it? I hope you can share any advice. I'm planning a trip to do this in the next few weeks. Any advice is appreciated!

You could come to Thailand on a tourist visa, get married then change to a non immigrant visa and extension of stay based on marriage but would most likely have to do a visa run to change visa type (i.e bus to Laos and back) If you can get the non immigrant visa before you come to Thailand you should be able to then get the extension of stay without leaving the country once you are married, I'm just not sure that would be possible but would be work enquiring with your local Thai embassy.

@@benjoewalker ok so i done this only last month! After living here 7 years.......facts are this ....you can come to Thailand on a 60 day tourist visa....whlie your in Thailand pay a agent to sort it all out (cost 9000thb) all you need to do is get the paper(letter to confirm your not married)from embassy in bangkok and give it to agents.(agents will meet you at embassy and book appointment too they do everything ..easy as that And for the 90 day reporting why give yourself a headache again pay 500thb to agents and they do the 90 day reporting for you...in pattaya a 90 day reporting can take all day with the cues etc Again if you pay the right agents they can open bank and put the 800k in your bank ...and your wrong when they put 800k in bank they take it out 2 minutes later ....(everyone takes tea money sir ) 55k will get you everything done if you dont have the money to put in bank!! Etc etc etc The way to go in Thailand for any kind of visa is agents..ok cost a bit more money but saves you headache saves time and will allow you to bend the rules if they need bending....and like i said before if you dont have a lump sum to put in a bank then 10000000% agents are the way

Thanks for all the info Ben. So do I (the English husband) have to open the bank account within the first 30 days of arrival, so my 400,000 baht has been there more than 60 days when I apply for the extension? Can this be a joint account with my Thai wife? Thanks.

Does the income have to be in a thai bank account. I have proof of income in the US but I let my renters a break for the last 2 months cause of financial hardships. But i have 6 months of constant income from months before.

hey man so I just did a search online and found this on Siam Legal's website: www.siam-legal.com/thailand-visa/Thailand-Marriage-Visa.php "Must meet the financial requirement - Security deposit of THB 400,000 in a Thai Bank Account for at least 2 months prior to the visa application; or - Monthly income of at least THB 40,000. A letter from the foreigner embassy has to be shown to verify this income it seems you can have proof of founds in a US bank as long as you can get a letter as proof from your embassy, I would try contacting them about the letter.

@@benjoewalker Bingo! that is the major problem. As at least most embassies will no longer issue such a letter. Which makes your entire video a big problem. So the only way now is to have the 400,000 for marriage or 800,000 for retirement already in the thai bank account. Ive been asking this question. How can you provide proof of income of the 40,000 thb if you cant get a letter from your embassy saying that you make this much each month? the answer is you cant! Its like the million dollar question.. no one knows

Be aware, if you married in the UK, you will need to get your UK marriage certificate legalised (go to UK GOV website) When this has been done, at the cost of 50 quid, and your certificate comes back to you with the Apostille certificate glued on the back of your UK marriage certificate, this then needs to go to the Thailand Embassy in London for them to register it and put a RED Garuda stamp on the back of your UK Marriage certificate. If you fail to send it to the Thai Embassy in London this cannot be done in Thailand (?) It will mean you have to send the whole lot back to the UK for a friend to deal with and for them to send it back to you in Thailand. I know, I had to do it. Secondly, some agents and immigration offices may ask you to get a certified copy of your marriage certificate and your passport from the UK Embassy in Bangkok. 1. They don't do certificated copies of marriage certificates. 2. They do provide, very quickly.(10 minutes) certified copies of your UK passport. However, upon my return to Thai Immigration, and seeing another officer, I was told I didn't need the certified copy of the passport (two day trip from up country to get it!) and he'd never seen one before. All you need is a photocopy of information page of your passport. Moral is that every office and every officer will have a different take on what is needed and not needed. Think of the whole complex process as an initiation ceremony into Thai culture and bureaucracy and you'll be fine. Another, and calmer way of dealing with the whole process is to consider your running around from one office to another office and back again multiple times as a job creation scheme to assist the Thai economy and provide employment to a Thai person, thus providing a family with an income and children with food on the table. Above all things, be polite and receive the, always pleasant, service you are given with grace. Never show anger or frustration, as it sours the whole process and only reflects badly on you. We are guests in their country and need to assimilate not the other way round. Good luck.
