Marriage in Islam: How to Choose a Spouse

Making an intelligent an intentional choice when choosing a spouse as our life partner is one of the most important decisions we can ever make. Unfortunately, current cultural programming conditions us to make this all important decision based upon the wrong criteria.
In this video, I share with you the common criteria individuals typically use when being attracted to and choosing a spouse, and I also explain how this often leads us into very difficult and unhappy situations.
I also share based upon the advice of the holy and blessed Prophet Muhammad ﷺ the key to making a good choice in choosing a spouse in Islam, and I also explain how we often make another mistake even in this regard.
Topics in this video include how to choose a spouse in Islam, the goal and purpose of marriage in Islam, the importance of good character and a positive personality, the error of choosing a spouse purely based on beauty, wealth and social status, the great flaws of anger, arrogance and pride that lead to failure, the preeminent importance of humility and selflessness towards the realization of love and the purpose of religion, and more.

Very eloquently said brother Ihsan. Love all your videos. You are probably the only person who explains Islam from a spiritual point of view, which is the true essence of the religion . Great blessings and peace to you. 😇

Salam Ihsan, Thanks for this video and for all your work. Please make a dua for my younger sister who is in her mid-40s and never got married. She may have been a little too selective when she was younger. She also suffers from episodes of depression. Her name is Noor...I call her Noorie. I just mention that if it makes it easier for you to make dua for her depression to go away as soon as possible and to find a good brother who is good for her and who she is good for....and where they both can get closer to Allah Almighty and to blessed in every way. Of course, if any reader reads this and makes a dua or supplication to God, that would be appreciative as well. Of course, I make duas for her every day. In sha Allah.

I get worried (scared as well) when I think about marriage, which I would be planning within couple of years. I always wanted a girl with these qualities as iam hardcore Sufi follower. But it's seems to be really hard for me to find a girl with such attributes. i am trying to be a better person day by day (which is really tough and continues process till death) because I know Allah has chosen a partner for me and I will get what I have been searching. I want someone with whom I can talk about spiriual experiences and grow spiritually togather into onesness.

Right on.. I am not Islam...However, our mindsets are more alike than not. A psalm denotes. It is better for a man to live in the corner of an attic than to marry a quarrelsome wife. I firmly believe that arranged marriages are so smart. Adult parents have so much insight into life and know the history of other families.

Asalaamu Alaikum. I truly wish this video could be broadcasted throughout the Islamic world and just everywhere in the world in airports malls 24hrs ! This is truly profound... humility is a sure sign an individual is extremely highly connected mind body & soul to Allah (swt) the Almighty Creator.. i agree! i am a revert as i have married a muslim and have taken islam to my heart & soul only because i can access the Almighty Creator directly just from a soul level i feel the connection... but my marriage is a troubled one causes me much heartache and turmoil, my husband does not cheat on me ... but no matter what i have sacrificed for him in this life he values everyone else above me... i dont think he values me or loves me... i am just a means to an end. Anyway i dont know how to stop loving him and i dont have the courage to leave him... Allah swt might be testing me ... but i am so drained... Allah hafiz

Salaams Ihsan. Is it possible to be too humble? Where does one draw the line (or does one even draw a line?) when it comes being taken advantage of, or in other words, when your good nature is being used against you? I always try to look at the examples of the prophets of the past and what they went through sometimes because of their virtuous and good character. I was always taught to give people the benefit of the doubt and to always give people a second chance. I always try to choose the high road, but unfortunately doing this has caused a lot of pain in my life, but having said that, I would rather be a fool for God than a fool for man. Much Love and blessings to you.

Humility has nothing to do with humiliation. God expressly forbids us from allowing ourselves to be humiliated or oppressed, in fact he explicitly commands us to stand against oppression even if standing against our own *families*. Humility is simply knowing your place in the world, in relation to God and in relation to the rest of creation so that you don't become arrogant as humans are wont to do.

Ihsan Alexander Salam Ihsan, I second this request. It is very hard, without an external guide, to draw that line when the counterpart does not reflect compassion even partially. I think this comes down to communicating feelings and needs in a dignified way. Looking forward to your take on this dear brother Ihsan.

Salam ..again another video that carries some dangerous seeds. You mention at some point in the video the word "Deserve" that is NOT the correct word. We do not "deserve" anything bad in relationships bc this is NOT what relationships have been devised to be by the Divine When shit happens to one in a relationship it is because there is a LESSON in it for the person. And that Lesson can be that was a bad choice or it can be you were not true to yourself or it can be you could not see past the smokescreen or it could mean your conditioning one of which *you deserve d it" will attract the same bad relationships in your life. I got way more to say on this but I will stop here.

It is more important to see what others do rather than what they say. In other words, do not believe what anyone says, but rather pay attention to what they do, to their actions. Life is challenging and we learn through experience. The key is to not become bitter, but to become better. May Allah Almighty bless and support, Allah Hafiz.
