Marriage, Class, and Feminism in The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte

A close examination of the marriages in this novel paint a clear picture of what makes a good or bad marriage. In addition to that, we can see a clear feminist argument in this novel as Helen, in particular, articulates it in defense of her parenting as well as tries to assert her moral autonomy in the midst of society holding her responsible for her moral decisions.

Yay, been looking forward to this one! I hadn't really considered the difference in wealth and class between Helen and Gilbert. Very interesting comparison between the various male characters there. I was struck by the detailed discussion in the book of what we today call toxic masculinity and the many different forms it can take, from the outright abuse of Huntington to the complicity of his friends and Gilbert's mistrust. Fantastic video series, keep it going :) EDIT: On an unrelated note, I just found you on Twitter, but it might be useful to have your social media links in your channel description and/or your video description boxes to make it easier for people to find you on various platforms.

Spinster's Library Yes! Apparently, “nice guys” were a thing even in the 1800’s! Also thank you for pointing out the lack of links. I will update my description. (Also thank you for the shoutout on your video. I just got a flood of new subs from it!)

What a great analysis 😍I was one of those who thought Anne didn't write anything on par with Charlotte but this book as soon as I opened it captivated me and now is one of my all time favourites. Can't think up even one good reason why Charlotte forbade it from republishing, its absolutely amazing!

Thank you very much for your lecture. I have been writing a graduation thesis about the Victorian governesses and their feminism, so I'm happy to find this video! In addition, your English is very clear, so I can understand that. I'm looking forward to watching this kind of series.

Such a great series! I just finished the book and found it to be a compelling read. As old as it is the book still feels very relevant in terms of the treatment of women vs men. I found Anne's writing to be incredibly poignant from the perspective of Helen as her husband descends into debauchery and drug/alcohol abuse. I will be re-reading Jane Eyre and Withering Heights and I'm curious how it will compare to Anne's writing.

Thank you! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I really loved putting a spotlight on this work since it gets overlooked a bit. I would love to hear your thoughts after Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights! I wonder if it comes down to literary craft, esp re: Wuthering. Is Emily’s use of dialect and prose - just straight craft - better? I’d love to know what you think!
