Marky Ramone | Punk Rock Blitzkrieg: My Life as a Ramone

Recorded Jan 29, 2015
This podcast contains explicit content
Hey! Ho! Let’s go! Marky Ramone is best known as the longtime drummer for the watershed punk band The Ramones. Before his “blitzkrieg” style of drumming added to the band’s driving signature sound, the drummer born Marc Bell was already a name in the New York music scene for his work with bands such as Richard Hell and the Voidoids and Dust. From “I Wanna Be Sedated” and the cult film Rock ‘n’ Roll High School to his struggles with his bandmates and alcoholism, Punk Rock Blitzkrieg is the story of a punk rock epoch from the only living Ramone in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Love how he "😮reminded" John lydon ,when Rotten stated he wasn't an original Ramone, Marky told hi. Maybe so, but he was in Richard Hell and the void doids who Malcom McClaren was infatuated with, stole their "look" took it back to England and basically dressed the Pistols that way

He laughed and walked away talking to some other guy - I assume he was in the band or friend. He played later that night after Blue Cheer and Moby Grape 🍇 opened the show

As he mentioned the van making it easier to get of of town (verses a tour bus), I have a feeling he dresses up like this (wig, boots, all black, etc) when representing the band so he can live hassle free in his personal life. Take all that off & put him in regular old man clothes & we would all walk past him on the street or wait in line at the deli, etc, without suspecting he was anyone special, let alone part of the Ramones. Every member of the band talks very openly about the fact that this was/is a business. Rock & Roll is partially based on fantasy. Even though many of the pics we see of the Ramones r from the 70s, 80s, & 90s, the average entertainment fan doesnt really want to see their idles grow old. That kind of culture certainly adds pressure to live up to unrealistic expectations. Fans want celebrities to sustain that fantasy. At least he didnt turn his face into something else like Kenny Rogers or Madonna. Lol ✌🏻

Thanks for posting this. It is great to hear Mark and see how good he is doing. It is such a shame that the other guys aren't around and able to give talks like this. Just imagine Johnny up there giving a talk like this. It would be absolutely incredible. Although, the craziness and pure insanity that is going on in the world right now would drive him totally crazy. But I'm sure he would put a lot of the ignorant SJW's in their place with a vicious tongue lashing. Johnny was THE man. All of the Ramones were great. I was born in 81 and to me, they were my Beatles. Actually, they ARE my Beatles.

Am I the type to notice the obvious? I suppose I am. The thing about men’s hair (as I’m sure you are aware) is that it tends to become less plentiful and change colour across the lifespan. When I see a man clinging to a wig well into his seventh decade, I feel it’s worthy of comment because it implies the unreasonable expectation and we the audience still see the individual as youthful. When you consider the ridiculous ego and tenuous grip on reality that Marky is well known for, one begins to see a pattern.

When I worked off Hollywood Blvd as an outdoor street vender DeeDee would come & hang out on occasion. Even though The Ramones were my favorite band we would just hang out & laugh & I didn't want people to grill him about Ramones history- again, he was just a guy hanging out & mostly we left it at that. Anyway, the one Ramones story he did proffer was just how fucking crazy Phil Specter was- & DeeDee swore up & down that the douche-bag waived a gun around. DeeDee said one thing & Mark says a slight variation. Who fucking really knows? This is the shit that makes legends grow...

As much as I prefer genres like hardcore punk and early thrash as the songs were much faster and harsher than normal punk rock I also apriciate some stadium rock acts like Boston foreigner Kansas Styx etc. Mainly because even tho they hace all this complex playing arrangements whatever else they always did have catchy me ribald songs and anthems. But I will say it all got very long winded and boring towards the end of its heyday that being said you could say exactly the same about punk rock when people saw tgey could make it commercial by putting together acts like divo bow wow wow culture club and all the rest of it make it campy and call it new wave and you’ll earn a fortune. So it goes to show not every genre is pure there’s always something else people latch onto when a certain musical style looses its apeal so for me when thrash got boring I switched back to hardcore punk then later got into grindcore and never looked back
