Market in TONDO, MANILA | My Opinion on Safety in Philippines 🇵🇭

Market in TONDO, MANILA! My Opinion on Safety in Philippines 🇵🇭
Divisoria market in Tondo, Manila is unique experience here in the Philippines! Unlike BGC and Makati, you're not likely to find many tourists here, mostly Filipinos. I also discuss the safety here in the Philippines and if I believe it to be dangerous for foreigners visiting Manila or other areas of the Philippines. Thanks for watching!

Hi Jonathan speaking as a Filipino it is not that they do not want the delicious rice cake. But rather, the vendor gave you the tawas or local deodorant because he likes you and he is not expecting in return. If he took the rice cake it would meant that he wants you to reciprocate his kindness, which is not the case. To be honest the locals, aside from being genuinely hospitable and welcoming, are treating you kindly because of the respect and kindness you are showing them.

You can walk 20 blocks in the USA and might get one or two hellos. You can’t make it 20 feet there without getting 15 or 20 hello’s and that’s awesome.

I would like to thank you for truly showing how kind and friendly Filipinos are and how safe the country is. You are perfectly right in depicting that safety is subjective and that every country has places that are sketchy and unsafe. That being said, The Philippines is generally safe. Filipinos are so much welcoming to all tourists and I find it so disrespectful seeing other vloggers doing clickbait and spreading untruth about a specific place in the country just to gain views. In your case, you are very truthful and so sensitive with those issues. Again I truly am grateful to you for your honest and entertaining videos. I pray you have a wonderful stay and adventure here in The Philippines. God bless. 😊😊😊

Tawas or Alum is a natural deodorant for Southeast Asians. I have been using it since I was a kid and it works and has no side effects. Kanunay means "always" in the Cebuano language. Amping kanunay - take care always. The Visayas and Mindanao regions share the same language except for the Islamic language. Ilonggo or Hiligaynon is another language spoken in the Visayas and parts of Mindanao. Waray and Karay-a are another Visayan languages spoken in Visayas area.

Tbh, as a Filipino in America I also hear a lot of comments from Filipinos here about the dangers in their own country. Just was there for 2 weeks. My first time back in over 25 years and nothing bad happened. Also went to a neighborhood in quezon city and was warned by a cousin there to be careful, but I've encountered more sketchy situations in my own city of Portland, Oregon

It's because of the selective facts and myths the western media propagate to the world about the Philippines for, who knows, their own interests. Sometimes those information are allegedly even sponsored by the supporters of the communist group of the Philippines to paint a bad picture of the government when their bet loses the elections. Now that there are more independent content creators showing the raw, unfiltered, and real Philippines, people realize that Philippines is relatively safer than other western countries.

Hi Jonathan! I was just watching this vlog of yours. I’m from Los Angeles, but I’m Filipino. Having said that Filipinos are generally shy, and if you start the sentence, “Do you want this rice cake?” They will answer you, “no thank you.” Because they are shy, of course there are exceptions to the rule but majority are shy. Instead, say it this way, “this is for you.” I hope it helped understanding this culture of mine. Shout out to all Filipinos around the world!

Lol. Tawas is actually hydrated aluminum sulfate compound which was (still is) a common anti-perspirant/minor deodorant. A lot of underarm products are moving away from aluminum containing ingredients, but it's still ok to use in this raw form as it has been for centuries. Divisoria is a great place to find wholesale discounts. It also has endless products that pick your curiosity. Not a dangerous place. It does have a few incidents of pickpockets but that is common in crowded areas anywhere, so best to keep wary while enjoying what Divisoria has to offer.

Definitely not dangerous, it is incredible how safe it is, considering it is 100% local, that is why I dont agree with common talks that ____place is "safer" than PH, the average person that promotes ____ places never goes to places this local in their favorite countries, the "safety" they claim over Philippines comes completely from tourist zones and outskirts of those tourist areas which are still tourist areas pretty much.

'sup jonathan. The refreshing black drink you had was called "Gula'man sa-ma'lamig" (literal: gelatin cold refreshment drink, in this case black gelatin). When you made a licorice taste feedback after you drank it, you noticed that you got blank stares, like "huh!" reaction... that's because majority of the Filipinos do not have a clue what licorice is (we are talking about the demographic that you were in at the time). So whenever you get those "clueless" stare moments, back them up with some context so you get your message and your feedback across. Keep the positive vibe! As always, mag-iingat ka palagi.

Jonathan that is good you will not get dark under-arm.. Unlike deodorant or powder... Just make sure when you apply it when during shower and it's wet and let it dry..

I love how you just randomly chat with someone in a street corner and they converse with you in English. I don't experience that in many Asian countries.

Good video's. Just found your channel and your quality of video's is up there with the best. I'm glad to see an American do these. My wife is Filipina, and I love going back there. I'm tring to talk her into going here but she says it's dangerous, but clearly it's not. I'm glad you mentioned about the title of others. Have fun .

Back in the day I roam that neighborhood as soon as banks open, collect this and that mostly from those banks in there and have it deposited in a bank and go to the other side of the bridge(Jones Bridge)and to the banks too until almost cut-off time(two o’clock is closing time for deposit for the day)and continue until before the banks closes, ride public transportation to home and call it a day.

Hi Jonathan, you are in the heart of DIVISORIA in Manila. A place where you can buy everything at their lowest cheapest prices! But still be aware of pick pockets and scammers around and its good for you that you have not encountered one yet and wish it won't get to you.

Nice to see you in Divisoria and having fun taking to the vendors. "Ilong-go" Ilonggo is a dialect from Iloilo and Bacolod in Visayas Region. Every province has their own DIALECT. And Tagalog is also a dialect from Katagalugan Region espicially in National capital region NCR . , and Filipino our National language not Tagalog. If the vendors give you the item not asking for payment meaning they like you and happy to give it to you for free. Our saying like the more you give the more buyers coming and blessings in return, As long it is coming from the heart. Thank you Jonathan for a positive feedback. Keep safe. God Bless

Re your encounter with the tawas vendor…..When you offer food just say this is for you. Don’t ask “do you want one”. Chances are a Filipino will say no because they’re shy to take it. If you notice most Filipinos when they offer you food they will say ….taste this or have one of this or join us & eat with us or along that line. . Normally they will not say “do you want one”. Enjoy your stay in the Philippines 🇵🇭.

The funny thing is, this is meant to be one of the most dangerous places in the Philippines, look how friendly they are. You would get your head knocked in here in Australia with a camera filming l, also the people are incredibly unfriendly 😂 & crime here is out of control.
