On this episode of the Korda podcast, is carp fish farmer Mark Simmonds.
Mark Simmonds is the proprietor of Heather Fisheries in Hampshire. Over 130 of his carp have reached over fifty pounds from a variety of different waters, some of these include the Brasenose 1 lake record and several other fish that are tantalizingly close to the UK record.
Mark’s fish known as "Simmos" have gained a reputation for their distinctive rounded shape, an inaccurate assumption. In 2018 unsubstantiated claims circulated that a fish called the 'Chertsey Fish" had broken the British record. Although never confirmed, this particular fish illustrated the appearance and grace of a typical Simmonds specimen.
Before establishing Heather Fisheries, Mark managed Broadlands Lake in Hampshire. During his tenure, he introduced Any Method Trout Fishing to the lake. This initiate enabled coarse anglers to fish through the then closed fishing season and saw an increase in popularity for Broadlands. Mark was also behind the stocking of a 37-pound carp affectionately known as Penny, one of the biggest carp in the country at the time.
Mark is known for his lovable and personal character who isn’t afraid to strongly voice opinions. During the podcast, he talked about some of the personal adversities that he’s had to overcome. As well as that, he shared some hilarious stories from his life as one of the UK’s best-known fish farmers.

Great podcast with Mark. It's so refreshing to here someone speak his mind. I feel his pain regarding otters there a bloody menace. I live in the Midlands and the Trent is seeing alot of otter attacks at the moment.

I used to fish at Broadlands when Mark was the manager there and he even had a full head of curly blonde hair then!! In those days Broadlands was a pike mecca and Mark would sell 4 trout live baits for a £1.00. It was not that long after Penny was stocked into the lake that the river test flooded into Broadlands as it often does and penny said ta ta and was never seen or caught again!

Iv honestly never been bothered about catching the original looking simmos, don’t get me wrong I appreciate the “scaley bangers” so to speak but end of the day I’m a carp fisher and a carp is a carp. someone tell terry Hearn to praise the simmos and everyone will love them 🤐 🐑

Mark that chertsey fish got caught at 60lb 4oz back in 2014 then next couple of captures it was 58lb at biggest before dying last year

Simmo has got the wrong lake for that fish hasn't he? He's talking about the old RMC Chertsey lake on the other side of the M3 to the Thorpe Park Ski Lake. Not where it came from according to my rumour mill.

@@sibaker4018 The pit it came from was an ex Cemex water, but it was half a mile down the M3 from the one Simmo is talking about. South Littleton pit next to Chertsey Bridge. It was stocked with Simmo's when Cemex had it. It's the same pit in Tels video Tunnel Vision. He calls it the Tunnels because of the tunnels under the M3.

@@sibaker4018 Not anymore it died. And you're wrong, they called it Marmite. Oh and it is South Littleton not Middleton. Taywoods Angling club had it after Cemex folded. No fishing on there now except for a bit of guesting for those brave enough. Danny was going to buy both the Littleton pits for his Embryo fishing business but it fell through. Pity.
