He gets way too much stick for his playing style or whatever but he is one of the greats. He’s one of the few players that isn’t intimidated by Ronnie, and beating him in a world final speaks volumes. Like, he deserves more respect that he gets.

100% mate. I have crucified him watching him play on the TV over the years! But he seems a decent bloke and like you say he is a legend of the sport. Might of never been fun to watch, But in his prime he is up there with the greats, Probably the best safety game of any player to pick up a cue and he's definitely the best at getting snookers when needed. All if which are key elements of the game, Just not as exciting to the casual fan maybe as the Break building of Ronnie or hendry. I've personally over the years as I take the game more seriously and I play a bit learnt to appreciate all aspects. But good luck to him.

I think his childhood traumas have caught up with him. I come from a very similar background. Brought up by my father and mother was ill post-natal depression and didn't see her until in my mid-20s, then only very sporadically. When you're young you're very busy and tend to gloss over childhood and it doesn't linger in your mind and affect you. As you get into your 40s, you start to think about life as a whole, you start to feel more mortal and think deeper thoughts. Selby is a truly nice guy with a great family and is a snooker legend whatever happens going forward.

I am definitely a fan of Ronnie O;Sullivan, but I don't hate any of the players who have won against him, including Mark Selby! It is, at the end of the day, just a game, even though players do get paid for winning, and I suppose for many that is their main, if not only, source of income. I hope Mark will take it easy, relax, find a hobby he truly enjoys, and then come back to the table in a new season, refreshed and raring to go.

This may sound a little odd, but Mark really needs to have a conversation with Ronnie. I appreciate that they have not been the best od buddies, but then neither were Ronnie and Mark Allen until Mark knocked on Ronnie's dressing room door and asked for his advice on losing weight. Look at Mark Allen now ... Similar with Gary Wilson who sought Ronnie's advice and was not turned away. Mark Selby is going through a rough patch that Ronnie has navigated many times in the past. Mark is far too good a player to call it a day and I'm convinced that a good conversation with Ronnie would be very helpful. It's worth a try ??

Are you feeling alright.? Mark Williams was another level. He came with two of the greatest players the game has ever produced (Ronnie & John Higgins), after Steven Hendry. His competition was much harder, & he achieved much more at a much younger age than Selby. Williams beat the best when they were in their prime. I like Selby, but he was never ANYWHERE NEAR the same league/level as Mark Williams, regardless of the number of World championships, saying otherwise proves you know nothing about snooker. Williams at nearly 50yrs old is still playing & winning (without a lot of practice), because he is just ridiculously talented/another level. Where as Selby has been struggling for some time now. Williams is/was a different level, & trying to put Selby in his league is an absolute Insult to Williams.!

I think Ronnie is the one who can help Mark to become a quicker, instinctive and a more laid-back player, do some practice matches for fun at a faster pace, and I think after some time Mark's gameplay would be more enjoyable. And it's not like Ronnie wouldn't benefit from them too - I hope "Being like Djokovic to beat Selby" means to keep your game at the highest possible standard. If you are a Ronnie fan, think that EACH his opponent has contributed to his victories, and the greater was the obstacle - the greater was HIS growth and thus success. Mark Selby is one of the greatest obstacles.

Top 6-7 player of all time. One thing is for sure all those people doubting o'sullivan and the drain top level snooker puts upon players is real. He looks mentality ready to call it a day and thats worrying as possibly the gritiest player of all time. Success doesn't breed happiness. Hopefully he finds what makes him happy snooker is just a game ask any top player selby has one thing that separates the great from the elite big bollocks. Get well soon

It'd be a shame to see a player so talented walk away from the game. His style might not be the most exciting to watch, but you can't deny his ability! Hopefully he can take some time off, work on the things he needs to, find that enjoyment again and come back stronger! Good luck Mark!

Maybe do a Ronnie and take 12 months off rather than a straight up retirement then if he feels he can do something in the game afterwards, then continue, if not, then do something else.

I have never overly liked Mark Selby and I can't say I enjoy watching him play but for sure he shouldn't retire. The simply truth is that he is one of the greatest players of all time and if he carries on all he needs is a few wins and he's back enjoying the game again. He's far too good to retire.

i dont think his style of play is many peoples cupof tea but there is no doubt he is a snooker legend, with his achievements is it 4 world titles? and other triple crown wins puts him up there ith the best of all time. He is going through a rough spell but im sure he will be back winning again in time. i would be beyond shocked if he retired.

Forever big 4 in my heart, actually it`s not bad decision to retire now. I heard health problems happened on him and his wife, it`s the time to transfer all attention from snooker to family. hope him and his wife to recover from anything struggling now and look forward to a stronger comeback. Big big loss if he retires permanently

Retire? He's not had his best season but still 11th on this season's list - ahead of e.g, Murphy(22), Robertson(36), Brecel(37) - and he's still won £381,000 and is 5th on main ranking. Most pro's can only dream of doing so well!

Not sure how he gets on with Ronnie, I know Ronnie really respects him, but maybe a chat with him might be beneficial. Hope he does what's best for him, and being that good, it must be hard when you can't do it when it matters. Happens to the best of them, even Stephen Hendry ran out of steam at a fairly young age, which just makes Ronnie's longevity even more remarkable. Mark Selby an all time great for sure

I've never been a Selby fan but it's very strange and sad to hear about retirement from such a champion when he's only 40 and a top five player in the world. Can't remember any great who retires at that age being a top player. Of course if the game not enjoy him anymore then it's his decision, but I think he should work on this moment and come back next season. Sure he could play good snooker for at least 5 seasons more.
