Mark McCullough shares his favorite homeowner-friendly masonry tools with Kevin O'Connor and explains how to use them for entry level projects.
Where to find it?
Mark starts off with a measuring tape, mason’s line [homedepot.sjv....] to assist in creating a straight line from one point to another, and a torpedo level [homedepot.sjv....]. Next, he includes a brick hammer [homedepot.sjv....] for cutting bricks, multiple chisel [homedepot.sjv....] sizes for different sized masonry joints. Mark recommends a rubber mallet [homedepot.sjv....] for brick walkways laid on sand to secure them in place without damaging the brick. A masonry grout bag [homedepot.sjv....] can be used to easily apply mortar into joints.
For application, Mark suggests using a finishing trowel [homedepot.sjv....] for repairs to concrete patios or walkways. He recommends using a brick trowel [homedepot.sjv....] for step or stone wall repairs. To take out and repair stone joints, Mark recommends a margin trowel [homedepot.sjv....]. A jointer/slicker [homedepot.sjv....] is used to fill and smooth masonry joints while also sealing them from any moisture.
For clean up, Mark recommends using a hard bristle brush [homedepot.sjv....] to clean up any dust or debris on the floor. A soft bristle brush [homedepot.sjv....] is recommended for finished brickwork to clean off any imperfections after repairs. He also recommends large grouting sponges [homedepot.sjv....] to clean up any dust or grout pilling on the brickwork.

I’d add a tuck pointing trowel. Narrow spaces.

Except for the hammer, grout bag and mallets, I think I have acquired many of those over the years. Much respect for masons and their trade!

Those black mixing troughs are good but be careful moving it when it's filled with mud or you'll crack the rim (ask me how I know). I did a quick reinforcement by attaching a scrap piece of Sch 40 PVC pipe under the rim. One just needs to snip out the reinforcing tabs of the rim. In fact, after later cracking one corner, I used a heat gun to bend PVC tubing into 90's and attached them under all 4 sides using pop rivets.

The opinion from the Dermatology team I rotated with a while back stated 'if you wouldn't swallow it, then you don't want it on your skin" Guess the take away is 'wear gloves'
