PT is a joy to watch, he's absolutely ripping! Amazing bottom turns, his style is powerful, fluid and clean: looks like he's riding a modern thruster in a nowadays WSL competition but with more flow. His and Lynch's approach to the wave was so ahead of their time, they were already drawing modern vertical lines. They influenced surfing so much and set the standard for the years to come. Thanks for uploading this gem.

The shapes from this period just provided the sickest style, just watch the lines being carved & complete command of all areas of the wave, not to mention the buckets being thrown from those power turns!!

@@freesoul3371 You are right on with the dates of the thruster's arrival on scene. I had single fin pin, swallows and stingers and had a twin fin, swallow tail that was a copy of a Clyde Beatty Rocketfish. All of those boards were pre-1982. Then around 1982 the Thruster arrived and I never rode anything with less than three fins again. Just for honorable mention, let is not forget the Bing Bonzer. I know the board had a following around the Santa Barbara, Ventura, L.A. County areas. It was a single fin with two strakes or little fins on either side of the single fin. The tail sections was also shaped with a couple semi-tunnels running from about the last two feet, out the back of the tail section. I remember I was the first guy in my crew to get a thruster. It was sometime in 1982. I bought it at Becker Surfboards in the South Bay. I could not wait to try it out. I saw it was breaking descent by the El Segundo Power Plant. My first wave was a late take off and it was magic. On a single fin I would have never made that drop or made it down the line. It just held and turned as quick or quicker than my twin fin. I was a believer after that first wave. It was so amazing I even made the take off and made section after section, that I can still remember it 37 years later. Needless to say, my buddies all soon had thrusters too.

You are correct. If you could transport them in a time machine to today, with the exception of really big surf, they would not even qualify for an invitation to any of the major contests. They were great in their time, but by today's standards their moves would not cut it against the countless guys that shred today. The game has changed and the envelope has been pushed . Now, in big, big surf, these guys would still be contenders. In 20' Pipeline or 30+' Waimea Bay these cats would have held their own against today's crew.

He was the 'Wounded Gull'. He was with a crew at Malibu one weekday around 1979 . I could tell it was him immediately. I paddled out and just made sure not to crowd or hop him. He could sure shred the little wind chop coming in. At that time around then, 1978 to 1982, we started seeing the big names surfing some of the North Los Angeles County breaks. It was just surprising to see some of these big name guys in your local spots. MR was a legend and counted as one of the top five surfers of his era. How can you pick a number one, they were all equally good. Some got more press than others and received the hometown advantage in the few 'big money' contests. And others like MR were so good, that they shined through; especially MR since he was a lanky Randy Quaid look alike, he did not have the Shawn Thompson handsome good-looks. At this writing, I an 61 years of age. I have not surfed in 27 years. I sold or gave away all of my boards and equipment. I still have one vintage, almost perfect condition 7'4" Lightning Bolt pintail 'gun' surfboard in my barn (in a barn if that tells you something). I just kept that one board to keep as a connection to days gone by. It really gives me a melancholy feeling to see or talk of that golden era in surfing and that magical time in my life.
