SUPERVISING SOUND EDITOR MARK MANGINI
One of the surest ways to find out if a movie is made by a professional or an amateur is to listen. When starting out, many filmmakers forget about sound, distracted by getting the right visuals and performances. But veteran directors know how important sound is to a great movie. And to get good sound, you need a good post-production sound team. That’s where Mark Mangini comes in.
Mangini is a world class sound designer, sound editor, and sound mixer who has worked on ear-popping projects such as Dune, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Blade Runner 2049. He sat down with us to discuss his career, his process, and any advice he has for up and coming sound people.
POST SOUND POSITIONS
After Mangini details his career, we asked him to clarify what exactly the difference is between a supervising sound editor, a re-recording mixer, and a sound designer. These roles are commonly confused, but they are in fact very different jobs.
The sound editor oversees the entire process, and typically is the one actually editing the sounds and putting them where they need to be. A designer, meanwhile, is in charge of creating all the sounds that need to be created. Finally, the re-recording mixer takes the edited tracks filled with sounds and makes sure they all fit together in a way that fits perfectly with the film.
AUDIO POST PRODUCTION
Mangini goes deep into the sound post production process with us. Some of the topics we cover: ADR, foley, collaborating with the director, collaborating with the editor, and music. Mangini provides us with some behind-the-scenes stories from his work on blockbusters like Dune and Blade Runner 2049.
Achieving great sound is anything but easy. If you want to stand out from the crowd, however, great sound is the quickest way to do it. Remember: sound is one half of the moviegoing experience.

Maaan. I'm a graduated composer, and I've always wanted to study Sound Engineering also. But having this masters gifting us this tremendous amount of quality knowledge makes the idea of studying in a formal way not that necessary. What a great time to be alive

Great interview guys!! Loved everything that Mr. Mangini said, especially in regard to bringing on Sound Designers during the early stages of pre-prod. That is exactly what I'm doing in my Horror film in development - and not only with the sound designers, but the composers too, as I believe a preliminary involvement of these figures will be highly beneficial to the film.
