Me dad passed away 4 years ago yesterday. He was the epitome of a Geordie lad. A hard worker. Family first. The phrase Wye Aye Man will always make me smile and remember. Mark Knopfler, Jimmy Nail, these men brought my dad home when he listened. I'll be forever grateful for their music.

I never went abroad for work myself, but lots of my pals did in just such circumstances as this song describes. It is just so true to life. I think this song is a true "Folk Song" in the sense that it truly captures a time and social history of Geordieland. It isn't heard anywhere near enough on mainstream media.

Incidentally, the CD single of 'Why Aye Man' and it's parent album 'The Ragpicker's Dream' (which I have copies of myself) are still available to buy at a very reasonable price from such online retailers as Amazon and Ebay, if you are interested.

This wonderful and unique artist deserves the Noble prize in literature, no doubt. His songs are never banal. He always talks about the real life, the love, the hard and humble works, the war, the disperates, the hope for change, the unemployment and the work as a social redemption, the prevarications of powerful people, the positive and negative aspects of the celebrities, the cynicism of the show business, the economic, social and politic distortions of the modern society, the effects and the crisis of the capitalism ecc. ecc. and all this with precise references historical, social, geographics, literary, cultural and social customs in beautiful and poetic lyrics. God bless Mark Knopfler.

Mark Knopfler is one of those artists who demand expressions from "A" to "Z" from dictionaries, describing his entire trajectory of success, respect, dedication and donation to world music and art. Vocation is not enough without LOVE and he has already proved that he has plenty left, because we can feel it in his songs His talent is consolidated and eternalized by all generations, which is an extraordinary feat and a great pride for music and all of us, its fans. Single and multiple artist in attributes and qualities, among all, only one was missing; he is undeniably INCOMPARABLE! Mark Knopfler has it all, it's just unparalleled. Geordies are, IMO, the salt of the earth, straightforward, honest, kind, the one you would like to be by your side in a time of need. I’ve lived away for a number of years but I’m very glad to be back. I also think our artists do not get the recognition they deserve. Jimmy Nail, brilliant, Lindisfarne, ignored by local radio stations and so many others. I love where I live. :)

Such a brilliant catchy iconic guitar riff, this guy is a special talent on the guitar who makes me smirk with his twangy guitar style.

I can certainly detect a very strong Hank Marvin influence in Mark's brilliant guitar playing. The Shadows music was a big influence on him.

I love this song. It encapsulates the original story of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet. It's fundamentally Dennis's theme song because it's about him loving Newcastle but being in love with Dagma.

I distinctly remember buying the original CD single of 'Why Aye Man' (as well as it's parent album 'The Ragpicker's Dream') on it's release in 2001. It's easily one of Mark's best solo tracks. Needless to say, I also love his extensive work with Dire Straits. Incidentally, this main title theme tune to 'Auf Wiedersehen Pet' Series Three also features cast members Jimmy Nail (Oz) and Tim Healy (Dennis) on prominent backing vocals.
