As a former French officer that got bitter about his government's policies, this song has always been talking directly to my feelings. It captures the horrors of war, the glory of the battles and the bitterness that this combination leads to. Soldiers some time realize that there's something fundamentally wicked in training so hard in discipline, honor, tradition, service and sacrifice to put what we are at the service of people who are the opposite of these values. Thanks Mark Knopfler for, in two words, underlying the beauty of France "the flower of the Aquitaine", the region I lived most of my life. If we should change our national anthem, I believe "Done with Bonaparte" should be candidate, as a warning to all politicians, gurus, clergymen or any other kind of power thirsty tyrants that we are done with them.

That's one of the things that I love about him, telling these stories. Like his "Sailing to Philadelphia"! Tells a true story about US history that l never heard! He taught journalism before he had success with his music, and that maybe explains why his songs tell us our stories. "Brothers ln Arms" is about the Falklands 'war'.

Yes , the "Little Big Man" committed horrors , as many other people with the sin of pride , but he is also the man who brought out his nation of the misery , straightened France as no one had ever done before by giving it laws that are still applied in all constitutions around the world. He was a genius in many ways. This is why he will always be a source of pride for my country and in the heart of every French person.

I have never served in the military, but grew up in a military family and have spent my life studying Napoleon and other great generals. This song never fails to bring me to tears. Just goes to show that War is not just hell on the killing fields, but in the hearts of those that served. "Every subject's duty is the king's; but every subject's soul is his own." Henry V. God Bless the servicemen and the bards that tell their tales long after the dust of their bones has settled.

How cool that Mark writes a song that is an Anti-War song about soldiers who suffeed about 200 years ago under Napoleon Bonaparte. It makes the message all the more universal, and that in war nothing ever seems to change. And here we are again in 2023 with all hell breaking loose. This song even more important today.

It is obvious that Emmylou and Mark have performed outstandingly within this tour, this is no surprise of course. There is no doubt about it. On the other hand, this record reminded me of value and grace of "teamwork". Wonderful musicians, wonderful lightsmen/women, wonderful cameramen/women, wonderful people in the mixage room. Thank you for the music, Thank you for this Wonderful Piece of Work. :))

*This is Epic, Emmylou the Songbird and Maestro Knopfler the Sultan, take Cosmic American music above and beyond to a new level rarely heard, seen or captured live. Two true Masters combine to create a Masterpiece of Masterpiece's, something like that!*

Notice at 4:25? The violinist took a quick (and gorgeous) detour on the melody and Mark turns to Richard and they smile at each other -- I'm wondering if it's because it was unexpected or something. I saw and heard so many versions of this song with many different violinists, and this guy did an absoluetly gorgeous job with those solos, different than all others.
