Tangerine is a brilliant film. Vibrant indeed, and very beautiful. With imperfect living, breathing characters who you really like. A triumph.

Love Tangerine. I saw it in the theater. I almost forgot about the iphone camera. Great film. Every one did a great job. I must say, Ransone was a little hammy. He didn't take too much from the film. I love all of Sean Baker movies. It's funny. It doesn't treat the characters like caricatures. The movie has a lot of heart. It humanizes Trans sex workers and their johns. It's low budget, but the story is what really matters. It shows that you don't have to bend over to get a lot of money to tell your story.

This is the kind of film I feel will define non-mainstream filmmaking when we look back on this era. Shot on cheap, readily available technology - about (and indeed played by) a minority in society who, while generally talked about sympathetically, are ultimately excluded and condescended to by liberal Hollywood. Oh, and it's also a comedy that doesn't shy away from how flawed these characters can be.

Saw this back in September at the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago. The iPhone style was a big selling point on all the posters and I was curious how they would pull it off. I'm glad to say that the way it was shot perfectly matched the high-spirited tone and ceaseless pacing of the film. I'm also pleased to say James Ransome is perfectly fine in the film. I think some parts maybe went on a bit too long but everything else was spot on and worth the price of admission.

Tangerine was far from perfect. Some of the acting was really poor, the limitations of the budget distracted from the narrative on several occasions and the plot is a little thin in the second act. But my god, if I didn't enjoy my experience of watching more than nearly any other film this year. It's hilarious, endearing and a joy to watch.

+PauLtus B It actually does look beautiful. It's very warm and lively, giving the city its own sense of personality. I forgot that it was shot on an iPhone very quickly.
