    Haha thanks for having me, Thomann, and to everyone who watched. Keep in mind, this was done PURELY for a laugh - anyone with a couple ears and some common sense knows that John absolutely destroys me in every way as a guitarist.

    Hey Mark love your playing and love everything Periphery. I’ve got your signature Prs SE and it is hands down my favorite guitar now. Can’t believe the quality for the price and I’ve got to thank you for collaborating on such an affordable production model. You’re use of the thumb on chords, chord voicing, and riff writing in general has really expanded my playing THANKS!

    😅 you would be supprised how much effort it is to master a riff even at Johns level. Not that he couldn't but he would set the bar much higher than most listeners. And would need some practice to get it up there.

    Funny all the idiots saying this riff is pointless sounding and over technical etc when those are the most common criticisms of Dream Theater from people too ignorant enough to actually listen to them properly. Periphery/Haunted Shores and Dream Theater are my favorite bands but it's kinda funny how many hypocrites there are in the comments here. What if someone said John Petruccis guitar playing is over complex nonsense?

    Visthenics Well, that’s life for you right there, not everyone like the same things! I know it’s a shocker. Watched again, still don’t like the sound and the riff. Tone wise one has to have taste for this, night and day difference in favor of Petrucci. Melody wise I downright hate how nu’, djent and whatever bands “harmonize”. Yes, to me it’s just making noise. Part of the reason most people dont like the sound of mark or the other two gitarists in periphery has to do with the fact they have three guitarist. If all their tone would be thick and full, like John's, periphery's mix would sound too fat and not tight. John on the other hand is the only guitarist in dream theater so his guitar tone has to be thick and rich enough to stand out in the mix and fill the midrange guitar gap on its own. Periphery's guitar tone in its whole is actually quite nice in my opinion.

  • @DaveCallousBand
    @DaveCallousBand6 жыл бұрын

    There's probably no other 2 guitarists in the metal industry i admire more than these two guys. But when looking at the comment section, it is clear as crystal to see that the fanboys of John, are butthurt beyond compare. The wailing and whining over Mark Holcomb's riff is unbearable. As if John was your boyfriend and Mark criticized his appearance or talent. "Yeah John could do that any day, he just didn't want to - Mark sucks - Fucking showoff - Horrible tone" You know what? I have a question for you. If you had half the talent these two guys had, and the chance to do this, wouldn't you show some complex riff you've written, and play it to your guitar god idol? Imagine if he played it. Wouldn't you be stoked?! (Which he probably could) Or would you play some retarded 12 bar blues E minor riff every human-being with a guitar in their hands has played a zillion times, and waste everybody's time? John clearly loved it. Fun fact in case some of you didn't already know, Jake Bowen from Periphery is family related with John. So not only is Mark "challenging" his life long idol. but also his friend. He's asking a good' FRIEND' who happens to be a guitar god, to play a riff. If you as a fan can't smile, and understand from seeing these two amazing humanbeings interacting with one another in this video, that this is a kindhearted friendly jest, and not Mark saying that he's better, and trying "make himself look good" or by any means better than John Petrucci, then you're a silly, silly humanbeing, and a emotionally paperthin skinned, fragile, child with idol issues. This is exactly the same as when two children are fighting over whose dad is the strongest. By god it's cringey and most of all ridiculous.

If you strip down those riffs from their useless flashiness, you are left with pretty boring chord progressions.

    Lol, I love how all these novices say the riff/tone suck. I get that you guys can’t comprehend Mark’s playing, but you don’t have to rip on him just because you can’t do it. I don’t even play prog anymore but I still find this very musical. You just need to get it and not be a hater lol. So much negativity, you’re all a disgrace to music. Once you understand everyone has a style and gimmick, and you RESPECT it, that’s when you truly upgrade to a musician. Until then, replace “musician” or “guitarist” with “hater” and you’re basically looking in a mirror.

    Tyler Lashway In terms of harmony and chord progression, that riff was pretty standard and boring. Just because it's flashy, has many notes and is "rhythmically complex" (omgeee so many time signatures and da polyrhtysdmsnddss, sooo complex!!11!1!1!1!) doesn't means it's good. You don't need to be an expert no notice how plain and flat the composition is. People have the right to express they don't like it. You can't say they are "novices", that's dumb shit. If you like the riff, cool. But don't come with that "hurr you can't comprehend its beauty because of you low IQ dur" bullshit.
