Maritime safety post Dali collision

When the Dali sailed out of the Port of Baltimore, it was escorted by tugboats. Once the ship entered the channel, the tugs peeled off.
According to the National Transportation Board, that’s normal practice at the Port of Baltimore.
But just 19 minutes later, the pilots called for a tug assist. They had lost steering capabilities and were headed toward the Key Bridge. One of the tugboats started heading back - but it was already three miles away. It was too late.

U should also investigate the Port Maintenance too not just the Crew & why the Bridge didn't have Proper Protection.

Few hours downstream is the Bay Bridge which is also completely unprotected (no dolphins or anything). Can' t have tugs everywhere, bridges need proper protection and ships need to meet a certain standard and USCG needs to enforce it. Regarding tugs, it took FIVE tugs to move the Dali, a single tug could not have prevented this. I was on a medium sized cruise ship when 2 tugs tried to pull the ship away from the pier against the wind and barely managed to do so (took them at least half an hour). Tugs are not the solution.

The NTSB has its hands full on this one. So far there has not been a good explanation why L1 and L2 breakers tripped first. The basic design is problematic. If either DG3 or DG 4, the two running generators starts to motorize due to load share problems both the LV loads and the HV loads can feed back enough energy to trip any of the transformer breakers and feed the motorized generator Running with the tie breakers open gives redundcy and that appears what the designers had in mind. The rules however are to run with the tie breakers close when in port areas.

We were told over 40 yeàrs ago when the Sunshine Skyway Bridge accident happened. I recollect our then President assuring the American people will never witness such a tragedy again. New regulations, laws and safety protocol were instilled. Somebody(s) made the decision to prioritize profits before safety. A 100 % preventable incident that claimed 6 innocent lives and will end up costing billions of dollars in damages and lost revenue. Sad. No responsibilities have been claimed yet.

Spoken like true politicians. Just like a congressional hearing. Isn't that special.
