On the initiative of the Permanent Secretariat of the Alpine Convention, on 3 October 2007 Mario Rigoni Stern (1921-2008) met with the students of high schools from various #Alpine states. With them, he was remembering the moments of his life as a #soldier first and then as a #writer. Over his lifetime he went through #peaceful and #war times, always closely connected to his #mountains: the plateau of Asiago where at the end of the war, one could see larches cut at 6 meters from the ground, because the #snow cover was so high in the winter of 1916. In that period the battlefront was not very active because "the #cold was the real enemy during that #winter, not the enemy soldiers". The situation was so extreme that the "mountain men" in the trenches (Italians and Austrians) started to exchange their tools to cut the wood. His speech "build peace during the war" is a testimony of this great personality."
