The literati for years dismissed him. They have finally stopped denying that he is the greatest tenor of all. How fitting that he was chosen to play the Great Caruso.

What a great aria,from a great tenor.He left us way too soon,he could have been in the Met Opera house,in NY,his voice could have thrilled more people.My mother and I are big fans of the great tenor.God bless him and all other,great tenors.amen.!

Mario has been My favorite tenor since my (distant!) childhood. I''ve certainly admired others, such as the 3 tenors, but Mario continues to thrill me over and over.

Lovely aria from "L`Africaine, a grand opus by Meyerbeer. The aria is sung by Vasco da Gama, a portuguese navigator. Wonderfully sung by Mr. Lanza. I also like the way he sings "Pays Merveilleux", another aria in the same opus.

mario lanzas mentor was enrico caruso, when mario lanza made the movie the great caruso, it was a box office smash, everyone loved it. mario lanza received a letter from enrico caruso jr, thanking him for portraying his father in the movie, he said to mario that not only was he as good as his father, but in some cases he excelled, now thats some complement. I belong to the mario lanza institute for more than 30 years, and was good friends with marios son Damon. Damon passed away a couple of years ago, he was a wonderful man. all the best Louie Vaccaro, las vegas,nv.

Thanks for posting this exerpt from Serenade-I thought it was great but Mario was disappointed by the negative reviews and moved to Italy partly because his money manager was not honest and he owed the I.R.S agood deal of money-it was tragic for him. Didyou ever see a documentary by Placido Domingo ? -Mario Lanza-The American Caruso-it is good.

that's not the only reason he moved to Italy he felt controlled by the people he was making movies and its what in the end killed him because of his rapid changes in weight he thought he had a more full sound when he was bigger but the movie makers wanted to maintain his charming appearance so he moved to Italy and was welcomed with a parade

Yes! So is the recent biography of him. Sorry, forgot the author for the present, but the book is named "Mario Lanza: An American Tragedy." In that book, I learned that both The Met and La Scala invited him to sing for them. But his Hollywood lifestyle cost too much.

@@Lala-mo9qj, there's more to it than that, although the weight problems certainly contributed. I read that the movies wanted him to stay slim because the camera adds so much weight. That requirement caused MGM to put him through quick diets and exercise regimes.

Sarita (tiny Sara) Montiel was much more beautiful in person than in movies. I saw her in Mexico at a theater foyer, not to tall, rosy tone silky color skin and very delicate face features. That dark make-up did"nt make her any favor.

yes - the audio level needs to be raised around 10 Decibels. Mario Del Monaco is still one of my favorites with this wonderful aria.
