What makes Mario so much easier to twist into horror than Sonic is ironically that Mario is so light on story while Sonic relies very heavily on it. With Mario, you're given so little substance to work with that you can pretty much twist a Mario game into whatever you want to make of it. Mario is an abstract medium that's very easy to twist and shape into just about anything. The characters are less "characters" as much as they are concepts or representations of an abstract concept or idea. It's easier to project onto them, they hardly ever speak, their personalities are constantly shifting, the world around them is constantly shifting, everything about Mario can be anything, and that's what makes it so much easier to turn into horror. Super Mario 64 is such a prime example of this abstraction to the point that it has its own horror subcommunity, because it's such an abstract and open concept of a game with such little story that it can be whatever you make of it. The reason this can't work with something like Sonic and why, beyond 2D Games being exponentially easier to make, you hardly ever see any non-Classic Sonic horror games, is because Sonic characters and their worlds are built upon personality and detail. They are the polar opposite of Mario characters, they're distinct and unique, you can't just "project" onto them or twist them into whatever you want them to be, at least not nearl as easily. This is why a "Sonic Adventure.EXE" or whatever the hell can't work, because at that point in Sonic's history, the games became extremely story-focused, the game is the story at that point- now, that was always the case, but at least the classic games didn't have much in the way of direct voice acting to fully solidify the characters. But by the time the Dreamcast era rolled in, unlike Mario which continued in the path of simple barebones storytelling, Sonic became all about personality and character as part of the series's identity, which is why it would be exponentially harder to create a horror game even remotely similar to something like Please Come to the Castle or, hell, Sonic.EXE itself. Their horror aspects are derived from meta fourth-wall-breaking horror that distances from the games' canon, which is borderline impossible using a Modern Sonic game. The closest you can get is something similar to Another Princess is in Our Castle, and at that point it's not neccessarily creepypasta anymore unless you massively alter the game's substance and progression itself to fit around a fourth-wall breaking narrative. Because if you don't, how is anyone going to get scared of a battle against a red-tinted Chaos 0 in SA1? What, is Eggman going to start bleeding from his eyes mid-twitter announcement in SA2? It just doesn't work.

Couldn’t have put it better myself. Mainline Mario games (3, World, 64, 3D Land etc.) are pretty much templates; blank slates. Sonic games tend to rely more heavily on plot development and every aspect about each character, whether its arcs, interactions, dialogue, you name it.

@@SwagGarfield I've seen one last round, the pillow shading kinda ruins it for me but i doubt I would have still found it scary regardless, not that it wasn't enjoyable. Sonic.EXE was never really scary to me, but that was why I loved it so much honestly.

MiMi is genuinely horrifying. I’m glad that Super Paper Mario refused to go past the first level for me as a kid, I would probably have been traumatized…

mimi is my favorite character but YEAH seeing her kinda makes me super glad i was never able to beat the first fight with ochunks because i was scared of the void and that was just a circle so if i saw mimi i wouldve probably been truamatized lol (+ i was scared of the void and that thing GROWS after each chapter so again. wouldve terrified me)

@@starboundsingularity Super Paper Mario is the closest we’ll ever get to an official horror game. MiMi comes second on the character list for me, right after Dimentio. And yeah, the void growing is genuinely unsettling, an existential dread that the world is close to coming to an end. An uncertainty on whether the heroes can succeed as it grows steadily larger and larger. Creepy stuff

The first Mario.exe game has a remake that changes things Level 1 replaces the falling spikes with huge fires you need to jump over. Let the timer run out and you get a secret. Level 2 changes the spikes into falling bricks you must dodge. Level 3 removes the jumpscare, only for Level 4 to add in a newly animated jumpscare and a certain character missing from the original game.

Fire video, and I wholeheartedly agree that a lot of these games could really work on their own as standalone horror games, but it also has a sort of charm with using pre-existing properties as its main point. Its just such a specific idea that works surprisingly well. (for the most part) Anyways, I can't wait to see more from you ToadBup!

Mario has so many good 3D creepypasta games, The moment we finally get a great 3D Sonic.exe game made with pure passion that is actually scary, the whole fandom will blow up. i have been patiently waiting until someone is able to make that come true, there were some 3D Sonic & exe fangames in the past, they were okay but some felt like they needed a little more time in the oven, and some nowadays just feel a little too experimental, imagine if they were fully fleshed out!

I've been thinking about why I like Mario recently and I think I figured out why: Whimsy. Mario games at their best are games that feel whimsical, as they're great journeys will all kinda of strange imagery. Seriously, take a step back and look at the entire concept of Mario and you'll see how stange it really is. Mario at its best is a journey of childlike wonder and whimsy. The reason I say this is becuase I feel like that is prime material for a horror game. Take the normally whimiscal nature of Mario and twist into something that just feels uncanny. Like you're trapped in a world where nothing feels quite right. Another idea could be the concept of nostalgia blindess. Only being able to see everything in this whimsical state as in reality, things are falling apart.

If you were gonna do this again, I think Mario and the Monstrous Manor would be a good pick. 3D one that plays a lot more like an actual game, and the horror is less from jumpscares or even the moment to moment gameplay being particularly scary, but more from the slow realization of what’s really going on. You’ve definitely covered more overtly horrific stuff in these two videos, but Monstrous Manor deserves some recognition.

By the way, B3313 got updated a while back. The changes are neat, but I personally don’t like the new stuff. B3313 used to be this big unknowable maze where you would learn the layout over time and get sucked into a flow state only to come to hours later with 50 stars and no idea where you are, but now it’s literally random and you can get forced to play a literal creepypasta level that unlocks horror elements as your first level. Like, Mario’s moveset is neutered unless you grab a red star, but those also completely change the layout of the castle and activate random jumpscares. I’m pretty sure the game also has real-time elements using the often forgotten N64 Real-Time Clock feature, which I know a lot of people like but I personally hate in games because not everyone can play a game at any time of the day they want, people can have responsibilities or medical conditions or an endless list of other reasons that prevent them from ever beating your game all the way through because of the position of the Sun in the sky. Also the game has a random seed called a “Personalization Value” that gets generated randomly when you grab a red star that basically acts as a “fun limiter” where it randomly activates small subtle changes ranging from doors being swapped or stars being changed to entire hub areas not existing or being locked into the horror nightmare realm. They took a game where the fun part is trying to figure out what’s going on and mapping out the layout through this confusing and indeterminant Hellscape… and removed that part. I COULD avoid the horror before if I wanted to, but my first impression of the new version is being forced to beat a creepypasta level under a short time limit without half my movement utilities. There weren’t just 4 copies of the beta lobby for fun! It was to add mystery and make the maze more complex! What’s the point of still having those if now you can just randomize the doors and paintings?

Something to note on B3313: You may have noticed the game looking stretched occasionally. That isn't a video effect, the game just does that sometimes after pressing* the big yellow button that the game warns you not to press, along with a ton of other random things. The screen stretch in particular comes in 2 forms: Either stretching the width of the game, or changing the size of entire areas. You'll go from doors 40% taller than mario to, very rarely, doors mario can't even go through because they're so small It's pretty much a catalyst in that, eventually as you play the game these things would happen eventually. But the yellow switch does a ton of personalized things. Go check out the wiki if you don't care for getting spoiled because there is SO much to the rom hack

Mario.exe gave me nightmares when I was younger. Now looking at it it isn't scary to me but it still makes me feel uncomfortable despite how goofy I find this game to be now.
