Mario Andretti remembers nephew, John Andretti
Original airdate: 1/30/2020 | At his home in Nazareth, Indianapolis 500 winner Mario Andretti reminisced about his nephew, race car champion John Andretti.
The Bethlehem native had a versatile career that included victories in NASCAR, Indy Car and the Rolex 24 before retiring in 2010. John lost his battle with cancer Thursday at the age of 56.
Andretti got the the devastating phone call Thursday morning.
"You can never prepare for something, even as predictable as a situation like this you can never prepare for it," Andretti said.
Andretti says when John was first diagnosed with colon cancer in 2017, he vowed to fight back and use his voice to raise awareness about colon cancer. He even developed the hashtag #checkitforandretti to urge people to get screened.

John Andretti was perhaps the nicest guy to ever drive an Indy Car. I have a lot respect for all of the Andrettis. Thanks Guys, for the entertainment..., all the way back into the 60s.
RIP John, Loved to watch you race, First guy to do the Double. That can never be taken away,my friend.
We lost a great guy and I got to meet him when he came to Portland Oregon. He was a great driver.
The Andretti family is a total class act. I feel for Mario and the whole family. Maybe the greatest in all racing history.

If only he could have won the Le Mans then he would have had the triple crown of F1, Indy 500, and Le mans

And to think, just after this, he lost his twin brother, Aldo (John's father) and also lost his loving wife not that long after that. And yet, Mario presses on. Bless you, Mario. 😥😢😭😭😭🙂

R.I.P JOHN
Will be missed.
Rest in peace to John Andretti! I still have my NASCAR Thunder 2003 video game copy. It's an honor to play as him! To me, he'll always be the driver behind the #43 yellow Cherrios car. At least, since he died in january 2020, John wouldn't live the COVID 19 pandemic. Bubba Wallace is also one of the driver for the #43 car as well haha :)
Over the top
Colon cancer killed my father-in-law after an original misdiagnosis. By the time it was discovered it was too late. He died three months later. If your family has a his history of this horrific disease or your near 50 years old definitely start getting yourself checked regularly. RIP John Andretti and my Father-in-law Mr. Henry Benton Nance.
Sorry for your loss Maro
No telling what he could have accomplished in one of today's top teams
Rest in peace, John.
John also held distinction of being only one of THREE DRIVERS, to drive a top fuel dragster, in an NHRA national event .... And race in the Indianapolis 500. The only other two drivers in this elite group are Danny Ongais, and Art Malone. Tremendous versatility. Godspeed, Johnny !! 🏁
