Mario Andretti: Addicted To Adrenaline

Спорт

Dale Earnhardt Jr. sits down for an incredible conversation with motorsports icon Mario Andretti. With a resume that includes wins in the Indy 500 and the Daytona 500, four IndyCar championships, and a Formula One championship, Mario is in rarified air in motorsports history, ranking among the best to ever sit behind the wheel. Mario reflects on his childhood in Italy and how his family migrated from a refugee camp to Nazareth, Pennsylvania when he was 15 years old. It was there that his twin brother Aldo and he discovered the nearby Nazareth Speedway and set out with the ambition to build a racecar to enter the local sportsman division. At the advice of his friends, the Andretti brother team settled on a 1948 Hudson Hornet for their initial foray into racing, thanks to the classic car’s success on the dirt in early NASCAR competition. With a fabricated story of racing in the Formula Junior ranks in Italy and doctored driver's licenses in their pockets, the Andretti's set out with a full head of steam and found immediate success, helping to launch one of the greatest stories in auto racing.
Mario explains that his decision to leave stock cars and venture into open wheel racing came through the ¾ midget ranks of the East Coast, and his time in the division helped land him USAC sprint and championship car rides. After getting his feet wet in the big cars in 1964, Mario had a tremendous rookie season, placing 3rd at the Indianapolis 500 and winning the national championship. Mario and Dale also chat about his journey into the NASCAR world, which resulted in a 1967 Daytona 500 victory with the Holman-Moody team. Mario admits that some on the team were pulling for his teammate Fred Lorenzen, but with the help of the legendary engine builder Waddell Wilson, he was able to overcome adversity for his lone NASCAR win. The conversation also covers Mario’s track record at the Indy 500, pursuing his childhood love of Formula One racing and how he came to win the 1978 World Championship and returning to the US to finish his career in the CART ranks, racing alongside his son Michael.

I grew up in Indy. Cut grass at track, sold newspapers when I was 10. Ran a food trailer on Georgetown Rd. Anything I could do to be at the track. My first race 1963. This man is ultimate Indy 500 guy along with AJ. I knew Aldo at the Firestone store….. I’m 73 and been a “track guy” all my life….. Hey, Jr, this is best interview ever. A legend for sure.

It was so surreal seeing my son interview one of my childhood idols. Same goes for you Dale Jr. When you were racing, you were my favorite driver and you knowing my son now on a friendly basis is mind blowing. I admire that you have always stayed true to yourself and stayed grounded and unabashedly honest. Sending much love to both families.

"252 miles per hour on the straightaway" at Michigan in 93. Wow. That was a great interview, I saw the passion and excitement still in him. He is the best if not top 2 all time in my book. I think Andretti will have a car in Formula 1 and how badass will it be for the power to be Cadillac! I met and shook hands with Mario at an autograph session in 2005 or so and he had the most pillowy, softest hands I'd ever felt. Quite a long line and such a gracious man, who was kind and genuine.

@@twoblacklabs904 I hope you're correct. I'm not as confident, although the current Concorde Agreement has a provision for 12 teams. That agreement expires at the end of the 2025 season. There are far too many drivers capable being competitive in F1. The addition of 2 more teams and 4 drivers would open some seats. Martin Brundle said F1 would benefit with 24 cars on the grid. I agree completely . . . hoping you are correct regarding Andretti being an immovable force.

I have had the pleasure to meet mario at RA when he was grand marshall for the vintage races. Total class act and a real racer. A team was racing one of his Lotus 79s. They were kind enough to talk to me about the car and let me really get a close look at it. I asked them how the car was running. They said really fast, especially after Mario had stopped by in the morning to look at the car. He was giving the mechanic setup tips for what he thought would work RA, springs, ride heights, tire stuff. This was 30 YEARS after he had last raced the car. They were floored that Mario remembered all that stuff. A true legend!

Mario Andretti is racing royalty not only over there in the US but here overseas as well. The guy is a racing god. Since I was a little kid Andretti was my hero and I loved watching him race.. my dad didn't like open wheel racing and didn't like indy.. he was a dirt 🏁 racer at heart ❤ he drove super stocks when they were actually big motored z28 camaro bodies and leaf springs.. and if he didn't have bad luck he wouldn't have had any.. he had this caution ⚠️ yellow camaro with a huge orange 🍊 7 on his car and was in 3rd or 4th place once and he moved to the top and just drove past everyone and the last corner his fan blade broke and the damn car shook so bad he had to let off and ended up being 5th or something so pissed.. then he was leading another race 🏁 and he had to laps to go and he tore a tire off the bead effectively removing his huge lead sending him to the pitts again mad... one day we were both driving the same car.. I was a rookie modern day super stock and we just put a wagamon motor in and in hot 🔥 laps it felt better than any car I had ever drove felt.. I was passing people I had no business passing on the greasy bottom they were all up high in the more tacky portion of the track man was that fun.. I came off the track and told my dad look you have to drive this thing tonight you'll win for sure I drew the pole and I was confident that I would be able to get a top 3 spot out of 24 my dad says your just nervous 😓 but you did look pretty fast so I give him the suit and helmet he goes out on the pole against copp now copp's super sounds like a late model they put thousands into it and my dad got on the top and absolutely spanked him and everyone else and went on to spank everyone in the feature too.. so in a way I finally got to see him get that elusive feature win.. which was really cool and something I wanted to see since I was little.. then we went to a different track the next week and same thing he won the heat and feature.. it was awesome.. we ended up getting a modified and selling the super stock so 🤷 full circle that was fun those cars are super fast and light so much power 🔋 man so fun

34:40. Dale is trying not to yawn. That is so funny. Does it a couple of times. Love it.

My original racing Hero. Love the painting of the Daytona 24H Ferrari 312PB behind Mario. How cool would it be to just to walk thru his home and see all the history he has there in his office and trophy room?

Being some born and raised and still living in the Milwaukee area, I love the resurgence of the Milwaukee Mile. Every driver who has driven the track always raves about how much they love it. I know it is very unlikely we get the Cup series here, but with trucks and INDYCAR back, I’m hoping Xfinity isn’t far behind

It’s going to happens via a partnership and yeah I think he jumped the gun a bit. I’ve always thought it would be great and that Marco would have a nice career in it still if he chose to be part of it.

Was great interview, just wish Mario's mic would have been better.... My folks grew up in the Poconos and it was a big deal when I was a kid and I'd see the racing results for Mario in grandpa's newspaper.. He was my early racing Idol.... Until this dude in the blue n yellow WRANGLER CHEVY took over..!! Sr/Jr fan ever since..!!(now rootin for Rowdy)
