Technically NEMO is just the left barrel of AMOS. It gives more than half the fire power of AMOS but being lighter turret, it can be fittet in lighter vehicles. AMOS was a co-operation between Patria and Hägglunds, NEMO is just Patria.

@@wanhapatu Its more propable they go with the Nemo than Amos for the new "Pasi 6x6". It feels like Nemos can be stuck onto just about everything.. they have been (i guess succesfully) tested on Jurmo class landing craft and on cargo containers as base perimeter defence, effectively turning any train or truck which can carry a standard cargo container into an artillery platform.

The NEMO turret is remote controlled not the entire vehicle. The older AMOS system had a four man crew: A commander and a gunner in the turret and a driver and one loader inside the carrier vehicle. It also has a number of ready to fire rounds in an autoloader in the turret bustle. The NEMO system has a three man crew: A commander/gunner, a driver and a loader, all in the carrier vehicle. Besides this, the AMOS turret weight was 3600 Kg with steel armor for ground applications or 2500 Kg with aluminum armor for installation in boats. The unmanned NEMO turret weights 1700-1900 Kg. The mortar barrel length, in both the AMOS and NEMO, is 3 meters long or 25 calibers. The maximum range is 10 Km with standard rounds or 13 Km with RAP. The range with the STRIX guided mortar round is 4.5 Km to 7.5 Km (ER) and both systems have a direct fire capability of 1500 meters. The AMOS has a maximum rate of fire of 16 RPM (two barrels) while NEMO has a maximum rate of fire of 10 RPM (single barrel). Both systems have MRSI capability with 10 rounds for AMOS and 5 rounds for NEMO. The deployment plan is for one AMOS or two NEMO vehicles per company. Both AMOS and NEMO can be installed on different carrier vehicles, but the NEMO being much lighter, can be installed on lighter vehicles and is proposed to the US for use on the STRYKER.

The reason Nemo is arguably better than Amos is price and weight. Sure the Amos is fancy and powerful, but the Nemo isn't that much less powerful and crucially it's only 1700 kilos and significantly cheaper. So you can install it on a way more modest vehicle, and get more units for the same amount of funds. Actually the scenario is exactly the same with the really fancy and capable AMV 8x8 and more modest and much cheaper Patria 6x6. The range of the mortar varies indeed by round/ charge, but it's 10+ km and precision rounds are available. The Nemo container version is pretty sweet (you can have it in your base, truck, ship), as is the fast boat mount. I wish and believe Finland and quite possibly others will procure Nemos, due to recent events.

So container can turn any truck to mobile mortar platform or it can drop it as defensive stationary base defence. So it is more versatile than Amos

Meaning, on that Nemo video you see 2 Nemos pumping ten 120mm mortar shells on target within seconds. That is going to create quite severe code brown situation on target. 😅

Far as I know, the turret is unmanned but the vehicle has a crew of driver + 3 guys...the automation at kzread.info/dash/bejne/i55omLhxoJbVeps.html refers to operation of the mortar itself, it gets target data digitally and starts loading and firing. I'd guess the crew can take over the control of the mortar for manual firing if needed, and certainly for the direct fire.

And these are great against heavy armor too, thick armor won't stop a massive shockwave from a direct 120mm mortar hit to the roof the hull. Like you could legit disable an MBT by just shooting above the hull roof, so the front of the turret with this. It will tear the roof open and disable the tank.

Also: using strix terminal guidance mortar rounds this can be done effortlessly: fire the mortar towards a tank formation and the mortar shell will guide itself towards a tank using IR-camera (which discards any tanks on fire). This means you cannot jam a strix shell with gps jamming as the final guidance is done optically. Neato...

NEMO is designed as a lighter remote control unit you can possibly put on the transport vehicles of troops to give close fire support. Remote controlled in case of turrets is that the operator is in the case the co-driver and the turret itself is automated.

Mount it on a light armored platform like CV90, MPF or AMV, and you've got a very flexible platform that can do indirect fire missions, support infantry with direct fire, and even defend against IFVs or other such light armor. Can the lame CV90 Mjölner system shoot on the move or do the multiple drops at the same time and so on? If that's done automatically by choosing the right ammunition and angles then I guess the first may be somewhat of an issue with the Mjölner if the handling there is manual? I don't know how much more AMOS cost but it seem way cooler if it's handled automatically and just deliver the same results + if Mjölner can't really keep up with firing on the move and such. Maybe that capability is still "pretty effective" or whatever but less cool indeed. Also say what's the cost of having two barrels vs just one? Like if one vehicle could drop away more mortars at once alone. Mjölner looks so low tech even though it have decent firing rate. Ah sorry supposedly this was NEMO not AMOS. Eventually perhaps. I mean we must first and foremost take care about our own defense and thats why Finland has been very hesitant to give any Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine either. After all we are at the front line of NATO countries bordering Russia, so it really should be the countries "behind our backs" so to speak who should do more. Ofc as years go by, I hope Finland can aid Ukraine building such an army that Ruskies wont ever even try invading again.
