Ok here it is - I myself am a former Marine "grunt" and Desert Storm veteran. I think its totally cool that this kid finished up HS a semester early and graduated from Basic. I understand that he, like myself, was extremely proud of what he will probably always considers hos greatest accomplishment no matter what else he does. However, his high school graduation is about his class and they graduate wearing their own "uniform" It is not the event to wear his dress blues at. He already had that deal. Much like it would be totally inappropriate to show up at boot camp graduation in your cap and gown. people need to learn that it isn't what they "want" it is what is appropriate and correct. He should know this.

I am a marine vet as well and I was thinking the same thing, I’m pretty sure that they teach this in boot camp about when and where u can and should wear which uniform. Highschool graduation is not the time or place for any marine uniform especially the dress blues. He should be proud of his accomplishment but just because he completed boot camp doesn’t mean he has to flaunt the fact he is a marine, in fact when I was in boot camp they told us not to flaunt it by wearing our uniforms for travel or things like this, basically not in so many words but we were told funerals and weddings (as the groom or as a fellow marines groomsman) as far as non marine sanctioned events were the only acceptable situations. Other than that appropriate civilian attire. Flaunting ur a marine by wearing a uniform in any other situation just draws unwanted attention and could potentially make u a target.

When the school said that he wasn’t allowed to wear his uniform, that should’ve been the end of the discussion. After he graduated from boot camp, he had a ceremony. It’s unfair for him to steal the spotlight from the other students at his high school graduation.

I dropped out of highschool when I was 16 and joined the Army as soon as I turned 17. As a requirement of my enlistment I had to get a GED or HS diploma to get rank or ultimately re-up. While stationed in Germany, I attended classes sponsored by the University of Washington (state) and received my highschool diploma from that state. I sent a copy of the certificate to the board of education in my state and was issued a diploma from my highschool predated the day my class was to graduate. While I was not able to attend the graduation ceremony I was invited to have my basic photo used for the year book. Some how the photo got lost in the mail and my photo never made it into the year book. It's like others said, your military graduation is more important and 40+ years later, it still carries more weight on my resume. Congratulations brother, you did us all proud.

There is NO doubt I am proud of you for joining. I have a son in bootcamp right now. I am 100% proud of him and expect to see him in Marine uniform when he graduates from boot camp but I also expect him to be in a cap and gown if he is graduating from high school. If this school or any other school allows it I’m ok with that but some could show up to graduation wearing some ludicrous things if this starts. Ben Schindler’s comment is exactly what I mean.

I couldn't find the response, but the response from a Marine Corps veteran stated that in the Marine Corps and the other branches of the military there is what is called the uniform of the day. The uniform of the day for high school graduation is cap and gown. In respect for the tradition of the high school graduation ceremony and his classmates he should wear the cap and gown. This is what I learned from my four years of active duty in the Marine Corps, that success and mission accomplishment are shared and that no individual is greater than the group. This is the basis of Esprit de Corps.

So no, he can't wear the gown over it.. he would be violating a long established Marine Corps Order if he did. I can say that etiquette is more important than pride in the Marine Corps, he would of known that if he spent a bit more time in the Marine Corps. Hey there Teufel Hunden (Nunya Business), maybe the Marine was proud of his accomplishment and felt like displaying that pride to his former classmates while separating himself from the public norm of self service that exists throughout our society today...SAMAKUS - Maybe he WAS looking for attention and maybe that attention caused some other abled-body American to follow his lead and join something bigger than himself. Milo - I can only hope when he hits the FMF he doesn’t lose that Esprit De Corps. That happens to too many...Don’t get me wrong, I’m not some mo-tard POG that preaches uniform regulations and haircuts, but I still get goosebumps when I walk the halls of my Regiment and see the faces of Marines past wearing their uniform with pride. Seems like some of you missed the point and I’m assuming a handful of you served or are serving now. I just threw on my 5th hash mark and still have my crossed rifles with 3-up and 3-down. If this isn’t your forte, I suggest you collect your paycheck and seek employment elsewhere. Why you’re not attacking the liberal society with which these schools are ran, I have no idea. Guess it’s just easier to comment on a “Boot move”. Cut the Marine some slack. Yeah he’s a Boot and has a lot to learn, but you have no idea what he might become or what he might face in the service of his country. It was once a requirement to wear your uniform when in public - Especially for formal functions. You think anyone ever ridiculed Johnny-B for wearing his Alphas around with that MOH around his neck? Nope. Because they knew he stacked Japs higher than the grazing fire of his machinegun to earn that medal. Pride in ones service to country. There’s nothing wrong with that.

Face-palming at this typical boot.. I was a boot once too, but omg, this is just too much bootness to stay quiet about. You don't need to openly advertise to the whole world that you're a Marine - *especially* when it's at the slightest potential opening to get the most eyes on you as possible, at an event or ceremony that has nothing to do with the Marine Corps or the military in general. Doing this during a school ceremony just seems like you're doing everything in your power to draw every attendee's attention away from watching their kids walk across a stage to formally graduate high school, and then forcefully placing the spotlight on you instead. It looks like, "Look at me! I'm a Marine! Your kids are all just a buncha scrubs compared to me! ME ME ME ME ME ME ME!" It might not be the intent, but it's what this action *looks like.* I like what one of the comments below said. "Uniform of the day is cap and gown, Marine." And that's exactly what applies to this situation. And if you're that piping hot to bust out the blues regardless, do exactly what that comment said; Wear the uniform under the cap and gown. Then, after the ceremony, take the gown off and don the cover.. It's that simple, devil pup. Congratulations! You got to wear your uniform to graduation, but you didn't rudely do it during the ceremony to be a huge blue falcon and make *everyone's* high school graduation all about you. You don't even *need* to show out for every one during the ceremony, you'll just look out of place - aka you'll look like you're just screaming for attention. And I remember my DIs and CIs, and then my NCOs and SNCOs telling me that being incognito about your Marinehood whenever you can be is actually the best thing to do. Don't be a show-boater when it's not warranted or wanted/needed, and don't put a target on your back. Reh?

Alex Harwell Well said Alex. In the opinion of a former Marine, the kid, especially being right out of bootcamp, should know what tradition is even if he doesn't quite understand it yet. The Marine Corps is very proud of tradition. It is tradition to wear the cap and gown at graduation. Wear the damn cap and gown.

Buddy of mine served in the CAF, ONE day a elderly woman walked up to him and said ''Thank you for your service sir'' His answer was ''I was never deployed, never gotten a chance to fight for my country yet'' The womens respons was ''It does not matter if you have fought for our country, when you signed up, you have shown that You are willing to put your life on the line to defend this nation, that is what matters'' So what im trying to say here lads is It does not matter if you have been deployed or not, this kid has already proven that he is willing to sacrifice him self for his country

His HS was going to allow him to wear his "plebe" uniform, BUT I DON'T KNOW IF HE DID...... The afternoon before graduation, about 10 of his friends went with him to the barber for his haircut. He was given his uniform at a just-before-graduation ceremony in the school cafeteria that was hosted by a couple of the school clubs.
