Actually it is true that more ships and plains have vanished in the Bermuda triangle than elsewhere. The reason is very logical though and not at all mystical - the Bermuda triangle is one of the busiest regions when it comes to sea and air lanes which means there's a hell of a lot more traffic than elsewhere. This of course means more accidents too which means that in absolute numbers the amount of lost ships and plains is higher - however the percentage of ships that went missing compared to other routes is not. PS: How would you classify Zealandia? As a submerged continent? PPS: How can you say that sea monsters do not exist? Wheren't you eaten by a Reaper Leviathan? ;-)

Ideas for Round 2 : - The Narwhal (The Unicorn of the Sea, some people still refuse to believe that they exist to this day). - Greenland Sharks (A lot of mystery around this creator, some believes studying them could uncover the key to longevity). - The Selkie (Seal Woman, pretty sad stories because men steal their skins so they can transform into seals and escape to the sea). (The next 3 are somewhat related) - The Nixie / Nøkken (Elven/Siren-like Swamp-Lake People. Sometimes they look like beautiful people, sometimes they look horrifying. They kill you for no good reason, but they will also help you and teach you to play their music, if you treat them with kindness and respect). The Lady of the Lake - Arthurian Legend (King Arthur gets his famous sword Excalibur from kind a Nixie or Water spirit, ad the end of the story he gives the sword back). - The Kelpy (a form changing Lake creature but this time a horse. They will drown you if you just jump un top of them, but can be nice if you earn their trust). - The Flying Dutchman (a giant ghostly Pirate Ship that rises from below waves). The Fountain of Youth (A waterspring that blesses all who drinks from it with eternal youth).

@S S I was trying to think of some places (to round out the list) and this was the best I got. 😅 Maybe she can ad something interesting. Eg. The Legend of The Flying Dutchman is likely based on an Fata Morgana that can occur at sea. That's pretty cool in my opinion. One thing I dislike is how Europe centered the whole list is, it would be if someone knows of myths from other parts of the world and would share them.

I would also rank the lost civilizations and continents at the top. It really tickles the imagination, and I love dreaming up stories about such things. I also hold Cthulhu dear to my heart. Would love to collaborate on a story sometime.

The sleep thing isn’t unique to dolphins. When birds sit in lines together, the ones on the edges will sleep with the side of the brain that faces toward the rest of the flock, and keep the other half awake to watch the flock. Sleep science is awesome.

Absolutly agree with Atlantis in the first place. I love this too. And perhaps this myth might interest you: The legend of the Bake Kujira, a japanese yokai, a natural spirit. This one took the shape of a giant whale skeleton, determined to take revenge on whalers for hunting its kind.

I've always heard that way back in the day dangerous parts of the oceans came with the warning, "Thar be dragons!"

Sea serpents although not huge like legends sea snake do exist, plus conga eels can grow pretty big , do these count ? Lemuria I wish. Like Atlantis is still down there with people (yes i know its just a story ) now think of Lemuria with aqua lemmas , cute and mysterious LOL !

Atlantis would be on the top on my list as well due to having played the game Indiana Jones and the fate of Atlantis, many many times in my youth. (The game is still on Steam I think).

I personally think Nessie should be a little higher on the list. Despite it probably starting with some drunk palaeontologist thinking they saw a Plesiosaur. I still like the idea of dinosaurs doing recon missions in Scotland, before their inevitable invasion.

As for fear of the ocean.. I'm not as afraid of what is inside of it, as I am of drowning. I'm not made for the sea.. so I prefer having lang nearby. My fear comes from if this boat or ship sinks I'm dead. I have the same fear with planes. I'm not ment for flying. If this thing stops flying, I'm dead. I prefer staying on the ground in general. I do love going to the beach and just looking into the distance and listening to the waves though. As long as there is earth under my feet I love the ocean. :P

I would love ther to be megalodons but sadly I agree that they are long gone. I've been a mad Atlantis fan since inwas very small, and was crushed when it turned out to be a fairy tail, but I still have a little hope. Also many many years ago I did se a theory that the Bermuda triangle is caused by accident Atlantan technology submerged but still functioning.

I remember back in the 90s people were super scared of eating Tuna because of mercury levels. And like, if you were pregnant you were definitely supposed to avoid eating tuna. Fun times. Also as far as Megalodon goes, I think so many people believe it is still around because they want that sense of wonder and awe-filled terror, and while sure it's highly unlikely that it is still around, there is still that thread of hope for them. Considering how many people believe in a god, it's not really surprising, especially for people who love paleontology and want to believe that there are still such creatures in the world, considering how many wonders the human species has driven to extinction recently.

I understand wanting to believe that there is something wonderous out there that we still don't know about. And I think there are. In our world our other planets, just not the megalodon 😅 But perhaps other awesome species. Scientists are constantly finding new things whenever we explore the deep ocean a bit more

@@Seamemaria Yes, that is what amazes me most about marine biology, it seems that every day there is something new and exciting, be it a new species discovered, or a new behavior observed. And that is why I watch your channel as well, because of the passion and wonder you talk about our beautiful oceans with! Personally, as much as I love paleontology and megalodon, I find that the modern Great White is just as exciting. One of the most famous species of shark and still we know so little about it compared to other animals! And unlike megalodon, we know Great White is out there, alive, we are able to see it, and they are HUGE!

Not a myth but a weird thing that happend to a friend of my uncle's. He likes to go out to sea for a hobby. He does not believe in any mythical things, is an atheist and does not believe spirits/ghosts or aliens are real in any way shape or form. So this is not the type of guy who would make something up to get people to believe in something. He himself also doesn't have an explenation and doesn't even try to explain it. He just said what happend and it's weird. So he went out to sea with his boat. Usualy he makes sure not to go out when storm is predicted, or goes back the moment there is unexpected weather change. This time though the weather changed to quickly. It went from calm and sunny to storm pretty quickly so he got stuck in the storm. A wave clashed him overboard and he asumed the end had come when he grew to tired to keep swimming and reach his boat and started to sink. As he was starting to lose conciousness he felt something wrap around his waist and pull him up and throw him back on the boat. He passed out soon after. When he woke up the storm had calmed. And he was all alone on his boat. He was pretty freaked out about it and never tried to explain it because it made him uncomfortable and he told this story to very few people out of fear for being rediculed. But he managed to share it after our fam on a birthday started to share stories of weird things that happend to them to this day they can not explain. It was a very interesting day. One of the most fun party topics I ever discussed. Sometimes people experience some cool/creepy/weird/awesome unexplainable things. Very interesting stuff. Makes one curious.

Yes. Could also be. But it's so rare to see alive oarfish at the surface. But could definitely be where the legends started

The mythical Leviathan was actually a kind sea serpent, so it was indirectly included =P

My fear of the open sea is what compels me to have interest in it. If not for the legends of krakens and enormous sharks I probably wouldn't have learned about octopi passing genes in a deliberate fashion, or schools of fish that mimic gargantuan mirages. I think the idea of a Nessy being this lone survivor of an age we only know from bones, eking out the last majestic breach of the water to be caught on camera before that world was left behind is a beautiful mournful fable of our own existence and purpose. For in that great ocean above, will our gaze ever be matched, or should our bones be lost before such time that camaraderie favors us. I would also like to see mentioned the myths and legends behind Orca Whales. The mighty apex predator of the sea that for some reason has a KDR against humans of 0.

They're not evil or good. Those are just animals, highly intelligent of course, but animals nonetheless. Like a little kids whose parents didn't teach them what is good and what's not.

What if Lemuria isn't another continent but a whole other world, where all the primates except lemurs went extinct and now lemurs rule the land and stay well away from deep channels where giant cephalopods might come close to shore?

Until 100% of the oceans will be explored I want to believe that "something" would exist somewhere in the deeps of 'em... P.S. I like the idea of colonizing other planets/moons but before that I would like to see an underwater City built and populated...
