I have had a boat at my marina which is on Lake Erie for 25 + years and in all that time I have never once had anything stolen from my boat, or my dock box which is closed but not locked. The marina has roughly 400 boats docked there and I cannot recall anyone ever having an issue with theft of any kind. I really don't know how people can live in these areas with such crime. It is really sad what is happening in the Country.

As a life long boater in Florida we have our share of boat thefts. But here when you call the police about a boat theft they respond pretty quick but unfortunately the types of boats stolen down here are large multi engine center console boats that smugglers use to smuggle migrants into the country and the boats are usually recovered on a beach in the Keys or Miami after a run from Mexico or the Bahamas. Some of the stolen boats down here are recovered after being stripped. But some are found before this happens. The difference is down here the police take it seriously because they know most of the big fast boats are used to smuggle people and drugs into the country so CBP is also involved. And if a thief is caught, they are prosecuted, not sent home with a slap on the wrist and a lollipop like in ultra liberal California where the actual criminal is considered a "victim of society" and the real victim is called a "rich white racist" especially when they own a nice boat. This is why so many people are fleeing California and moving to Florida.

I first heard about this issue over six months ago. What people don't realize yet is what you just described about Florida is now happening in California. I'm sure that due to the nature of the crime federal agencies like Coast Guard, DEA etc. will get up to speed eventually and fight back. Oakland police can't fight it alone.

They are just north of park street Bridge.

They are active in the evenings & at night. & what ur hearing from that area fireworks people light in the parking lot. Not gunfire. Boaters should leave some bait for them to swipe, like a dead laptop with a hidden airtag inside to track its location. The second it moves, report it stolen online so u have a case #. Gather ur GPS evidence & get the police to respond. Make sure u do it on a slow evening, like a Tuesday. They need to be in possession of the stolen item. & record the entire thing so any threats these people make can be used to add additional charges. Be safe.

The have a small boat or 2 that they play pirate with, then return to that spot to unload stolen goods onto 2 larger floating piles of trash (hoarder boats) that stay in that location.

As someone who lives in Oakland, I find this terrifying. The productive tax-paying citizens will leave and in fact are leaving, so the police force will only shrink further and become more helpless. I know for a fact that many crimes are never reported to the police, because why bother? So the stats you read for Oakland crime understate the problem. My wife and I both have businesses here that are not easy to move, so I feel a bit stuck, and I'm getting tired sleeping with one eye open. What does the future hold for this place?

I had several boats moored at the Port of Oakland back in the early 2000's and never had any problems. The so called "homeless" crisis hadn't hit the bay area as hard as it is now, but it was starting to get bad in some areas with people living in RV's along the frontage road to the freeway near the Berkeley marina. People who own boats and especially people who live aboard them are a different breed. They will take matters into their own hands and they have the means to do so. The bay has thousands of bodies buried in it so what's a few more. Fish gotta eat!

We've had the same experience with police and sheriffs in our area. No reason to call them they do NOTHING!

i have a feeling that the local fish, and fellow aquatic creatures, are soon going to receive an "all you can eat" buffet!

I feel like attorneys force the issue and frankly sailing is a very expensive hobby and it won't be long before insurance companies begin legalities to reclaim monies due. You have to fight snakes using snakes!!

I’ve moved to a “free state” and keep tabs on the hilarity of the lawlessness of California. The stuff I used to accept as a reality is now pure comedy. Pirates steaming boats, homeless setting fire to parks, roads that tear up your cars, endless traffic, tax dollars going down the toilet… I feel bad for all of you honest taxpayers still stuck in that dumpster fire. Do you best to move away, I promise you that a higher quality of life is out there.

70 Years ago it was, "Hang Pirates, Shoot Looters", no more, it is unlawful to protect your property and lives. If the government law does not threaten Execution, aka Capital Punishment, they what right does the individual have to do it?

It’s suck to live or visit California nowadays. The crimes of theft are everywhere. My family personal belongings were stolen by the thieves smashing our rental van in a restaurant parking lot during day light when we visited San Francisco this summer.

That's why you need to get out of the "defend" mentality, and when you see them pirating, you switch from defending to "attacking". Stop calling the police and take care of these matters yourself. YOU'RE ON THE OCEAN. MAKE THEM "DISAPPEAR".

We got two thieves running around down here in Monroe County, Florida the keys. They make everybody look bad they cost everybody extra time and money. I didn't have to lock my doors for 20 years. And I can't because I have to bunny rabbits running around my boat. And I don't want them to be trapped inside in case of sinking or fire. I guess I know now why they hung Pirates. Good luck, get a trail camera and hide it in your boat facing the stern.

It is very exciting to watch the bay area self-destruct. I can barely wait until the next episode.

This story is so sad. If OPD had 20 boats, they still wouldn't come out to stop anyone. It's not dept policy. And these aren't PIRATES. DAMN! They're dope fiends , thieves, and dumb asses. If you want these people stopped, use common sense. You're not dealing with Stanford physics program graduates. And there's so few people actually anchored out in the estuary, it shouldn't be hard to figure out who it is. Fyi, I'm an anchor out myself. And have been for about a year off and on. I work, don't use, and clean up after everyone out here, including some of the people I the marinas that don't give a shit. And btw, the last slip I had here, last year, I caught the "pirate" responsable for numerous thefts, including things off my boat. And this "pirate" came from a boat he had at a slip in the very same marina. Just saying.

I used to live in Old Town Oakland and could see the main cop shop from the rooftop of our apartment building. Once called the cops because two gangs were shooting at one another three blocks away from the main police HQ. Cops showed up 70 minutes later. Because live gunfire is dangerous, right?

Watching CA cops has been a laugh riot for decades. They are straight out of a Keystone comedy. Watching them chase OJ at 40mph for hours really set the modern day trend. Watching 20 of them hide behind their cars in LA yesterday while a civilian stopped a baboon with his truck was the latest example. They continued to hide while the monkey hung upside down outside of his car. I have never seen such a cowardly display but such a large group of so called "law enforcement". At this point they are a running joke and have been for quite some time.

And the Mayor says everything is fine 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Classic Oakland...you are on your own here, and laws are not enforced w/ criminals, but if you are a tax payers with means, I would be very careful opening fire. Make sure you know the laws, because you could be charged yourself. Oakland is a failed city.

To be fair, if you're on a boat with a few spare 20 lb weights and easy access to the ocean, who's going to say those gunshots weren't an accidental discharge at nothing? Certainly nobody in the boat when you get back to the dock. If the cops won't show up for a homeowner they're unlikely to show up for some crackhead that says his buddy went missing when he went to rob a boat and there was some gunfire.

It looks like preparing for crime should be a priority over preparing for an earth quake.

As long as the cops do nothing, the criminals will continue to do what they want. If police won't do anything, it is up to owners to eliminate the criminals. I wonder who is giving police these orders... I suspect it's the same organization that ordered police in Maui to block roads to and from the fire areas.

At my 70 years, still working five days a week, residing further to the east, I know of solutions to these scenarios, even solutions to preempt experiencing these scenarios. Perhaps, old men like myself will have to cleanse the government promoted mayhem, chaos, property destruction and theft, and general civil disorder.

In the case of American communists, they could't find enough anarchists to roll out, so they quit enforcing the law just enough...that low level riot psychology took over in newsworthy cities. The pilot for this was perhaps Ferguson, with Holder threatening federal review if the city dared restore order and protect property. It didn't go as well as hoped, despite a series of coaching sessions for the Obama administration hosted by al sharpton on how to work up a street mob with little or no cause in hand.

Misfeasance and malfeasance of duty as far as the police dept. A Lawyer can have a good time with that. As far as the pirates boarding a boat , Samuel Colt and John Browning are great deterents. The Smith & Wesson boy's are also quite good at protecting property.

No, the solution you speak of robs the other pirates of hearing the stories and seeing the evidence from their associates who’s fingers have been removed via blunt trauma

This seems to be part and parcel with the stories of rampant and flagrant car break-ins and shoplifting. I lived a bit south of SF in the late 80's, and this was not happening then. What changed? And why aren't they doing anywhere near enough to address it? Lack of funds?

They knew there were guns in his yacht. Sounds like it was someone he knew.

The whole point of a boat is that it's mobile, if I had ANY inkling of crime going up, I would move my boat to safer waters BEFORE someone stole it.There are plenty of places safer than Oakland, infact just about anywhere is safer than Oakland.
