Marin Marais: Chaconne in A Major (Book 5); Elisabeth Reed, viola da gamba
Музыка
The Chaconne in A Major from Marin Marais' fifth book (Pièces de Viole, Cinquième Livre, Paris, 1725). Performed on the viola da gamba by Elisabeth Reed, with Cassandra Luckhardt, viola da gamba, and Katherine Heater, harpsichord.
In the first half of the 18th century, the French viol players dazzled audiences with their varied and beautifully crafted compositions as well as their technical abilities. Marais' chaconne shows the work of a mature composer; he balances the motivic elements perfectly with the registration of the instruments. HD Video from Voices of Music.

When I was a kid the only Viola da Gamba I ever saw outside of a textbook was behind glass in an Edinburgh museum, held between the knees of a manikin in 18th Century dress. It is quite amazing to live in a time when the instrument not only has a voice again but that it is appreciated that it is capable of conveying tenderness, drama and consummate artistry too.

Your comment is not only lovely in itself but has captured the essence of this marvelous piece and the women who so capably play it. "Music has a voice again"....what a marvelous saying.
The gamba is truly the instrument that is a representation of the human voice and Marais knew how to write music to make it sing!
Oh, my goodness, the sound of that viola da gamba is ravishing, and there's nothing like Marais. A truly lovely performance that I keep coming back to again and again.

Totally agree!
It's wonderful to see an instrument I made many years ago working well and in the hands of a great player! :)

And wonderful person :)
Have been listening to VoM for nigh on a year, many, many of their piece over and over. What I find so compelling, so satisfying, across their quite diverse performances, across all of their musicians and singers, is their camaraderie of heart, spirit and soul with the Baroque across its diversity of origins. The brilliance of the Baroque. The brilliance of VoM.
Marian's music is the real maturity for the viola da gamba.

I mean Marin
Somehow I never managed to warm to French baroque music, but if any performance could start changing that it is this one. Wonderful music and ditto performance. The gamba, like the lute, is one of these instruments I regret going out of fashion. Luckily there are many great and dedicated musicians advocating these heavenly instruments again.
The sound of thees instruments are breathtaking and the musician are brilliant
Absolutely fantastic ; Great sound; great rythm. Everything is fantastic
Fantastic!
Elizabeth, that was just fantastic. You made that viol sing out so beautifully! I loved it! This is one of my top favorites of the V of M videos, and there are a lot of really nice ones.

great!!
Quand j'entends cette music j'ai l'impression de rentrer dans un autre monde même si c'est juste pour quelques instants . C'est trop beau.
Blissful.
I wish that I had learned to play the viol instead of truant, still, I recognise beautiful music when I hear it. Isn’t it windy? No, its Thursday, now shut gob and put the kettle on!
The passage at ca. 2:17 never fails to cheer me up. The viola da gamba is such a beautifully vocal instrument: I sometimes wonder what it would have been like if instruments like the gamba and the recorder remained in use alongside the violin family and the traverso up to the present: Wouldn't it be interesting if we had viola da gamba and recorder music by Debussy or Stravinsky?
Nicely done!
Beautifully played, and that harpsichord is a beautiful instrument. If I could get it through the front door it would look great in my apartment. Mind you, I cannot play it, but it would impress visitors!😉

Marais made 7 strings cool way before Korn, or even before Steve Vai for that matter.

And before that, the lute players.
There is an old joke: What's the difference between a violin and a viola da gamba? - The viola da gamba burns longer :-) That is only partly true. A VdG sounds much nicer!
French music without the need of translation :-)
Please identify the harpsichord and the viols. Their makes deserve credits allong with the musicians, don't you think?

I will look--the harpsichord is John Phillips.
